In the 1970s, there were tiger reserves, parks, and sanctuaries created to protect the tigers in India. Even so, there are fewer than 1,500 Bengal tigers in India today. India has the world s second-largest population. Growing cities are shrinking the areas where tigers live. Tigers are big and they like to hunt alone. They need plenty of room to roam. Fewer than 1,500 Bengal tigers live in India today. AP Images Tigers are also hunted by poachers. Poachers illegally hunt the cats for their coats. Officials in India are working to stop poachers. They are also trying to find better ways to protect the areas where the tigers live. When tigers are protected they often roar back. At Ranthambhore (RAN-tham-bore) National Park in India at least 10 Bengal tiger cubs have been born in the past two years. The hope is that these cubs will help India s tigers make a comeback. Better protection is increasing India s tiger population. AP Images Lesson 1 Math Skill Builders
