Your choice If you have decided to have your loved one s remains cremated, there is a choice to be made as to where you would like their final resting place to be. It is a personal choice that requires careful consideration. You may choose a resting place at one of our three beautiful locations Islington and St Pancras Cemetery, Hampstead Cemetery or Trent Park Cemetery or take them home, or somewhere personal to you. There are also a number of different memorials to choose from from the more traditional rose bush, or plaque, to something a little bit different. This brochure is here to guide you through all the options available so you can find a suitable tribute and perfect resting place for the ashes. If you are unsure of anything our friendly team are also on hand to answer any queries that you may have. 4 Islington and St Pancras Cemetery Office contact details: W: www.iccslondon.co.uk T: 020 7527 8300

Letting us know your decision You should take your time to consider and discuss the most suitable option. Once you have made a decision on what to do with the ashes you will need to let us know. It will need to be submitted by the person who applied for the cremation at the funeral directors, even if they discuss it with others or consider wishes that were left behind in a will. Please submit this decision in writing by completing the form enclosed within this brochure. 5

Burying ashes Burying ashes is where the ashes are placed within the ground. They can either be buried loose or within a container. This is also known as a committal or an interment. There are lots of options for burial within Islington and Camden s Cemetery grounds. Attending the burial You can choose to be present during the burial of the remains and to have a short service if you like. You an also arrange for a minister to attend should you prefer a religious service. During this time you are free to say anything you like and only when you are ready will the remains be placed within the ground. Remains are placed loose at certain positions and may not be recoverable. The staff at the cemetery can advise which areas this will apply to. Our Garden of Remembrance in Islington and St Pancras Cemetery offers various memorial options. Some will have memorials already in place, while others allow for bespoke memorials to be purchased and installed. We also have areas within both Islington and St Pancras and Trent Park Cemeteries where remains can be scattered. We will keep a record of the area, however the position would remain unmarked. You have the option to bury the ashes in an existing position or privately owned grave space if a family member or close friend is buried there. 6 If you would like to request this you will need to book an appointment through our main office at Islington and St Pancras Cemetery. If you would like a minister to attend then you will need to arrange it directly with them. If you have elected not to be present during the burial, the same process will apply although the appointment will be booked by the cemetery office on your behalf. What you should consider There are legal considerations when burying remains. The main one is once buried they cannot be removed without a special licence which is granted by the government. If the remains are buried loose, unfortunately they will not be recoverable at all. Islington and St Pancras Cemetery Office contact details: W: www.iccslondon.co.uk T: 020 7527 8300

Burying ashes in a cremated remains plot Cremated remains plots are small graves where ashes can be buried.some plots offer the ability to purchase a bespoke memorial stone and others will have one in place already. Our cremated remains graves allow for a minimum of two sets of cremated remains and a maximum of four, depending on the type of grave selected. Finding the right option Our staff can talk you through the options and advise you which option would be most suitable for your requirements. At Islington and St Pancras Cemetery you can arrange an appointment to view the grave space options that are available to you. During this appointment a member of the team will accompany you and answer any questions you may have. This is known as a selection appointment and can be booked by contacting the main cemetery office. Burying ashes in an existing grave If you would like to bury ashes within an existing grave you will need to obtain the consent of the grave owner. There is a charge for this. 7

Garden of Remembrance Islington and St Pancras Cemetery has a peaceful garden area dedicated to remembering those who have died. There are a variety of memorial options, from beautiful rose bushes and trees, to benches and plaques. In our experience we find that families find comfort in having a particular place to visit. You should not rush this decision and there is no time limit for choosing the perfect memorial or on the number of memorials you can purchase. 8 You can choose to have a memorial in the cemetery, even if the cremation did not take place at Islington Crematorium. Islington and St Pancras Cemetery Office contact details: W: www.iccslondon.co.uk T: 020 7527 8300

The majority of our memorials are available for immediate purchase and you can choose from various length of times to lease the memorial for. When the lease expires you will be given the option to extend the dedication. If you decide not to then the positon will become available to another family. There are a range of plaque and memorial stones to select from. Contact the main office for details of sizes and any terms and conditions for your chosen memorial. The gardens also offer a peaceful area where remains can be scattered. This is free of charge to those whose service took place at Islington Crematorium, however others can choose to do this for a small fee. We will record the position of the scattering, however this is purposely kept clear and open so we are unable to mark the area or position any memorials here. 9

Living memorials Rose tree and rose bush memorials You can choose to bury ashes loose (not in a container) under a charming rose tree or bush within the Garden of Remembrance. You can choose from a five or ten year lease and you will have the option to renew when this expires. If you wish, you may also have a small stone memorial which our staff can offer advice and guide you through the process of ordering. 10 Islington and St Pancras Cemetery Office contact details: W: www.iccslondon.co.uk T: 020 7527 8300
