One of the most famous Newfoundlands was Seaman, who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their expedition. He was purchased by Meriwether Clark in Pittsburg for $20, which at the time was a half months salary. Seaman was a valued member of the expedition and performed tasks such as chasing squirrels who were blocking the way, flushing beavers out of their lodges and warning of danger. He was a constant companion of Lewis. I just returned from an 18 day trip through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon following in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark. There were statues at the interpretative areas along the route and Seaman was always in the group. At Fort Mandam, where the expedition spent the first winter, SEAMAN Seaman has his own statue. What a thrill to see Newfoundlands honored. Only one interpretative center at Great Falls, Montana had a dog. Bill Schueller brings his dog Buddy to the center on Wednesdays and Saturdays to the delight of visitors. Of course, Buddy loves all the attention. A ranger told me that he has gotten a grant to get a Newfoundland and bring it to work and is awaiting a puppy. At Harpers Ferry, the expedition purchased rifles. Judith Marshall has taken her dog Alfie to the reenactments. It would be wonderful if more clubs got involved with history and brought dogs to the Lewis and Clark interpretative events. Enjoy the photos of Seaman. Submitted by Cookie Basham 8

The CNC BOD should have one point of contact for club event publicity not a different publicity contact for each event. Our event Chairs have enough to do as they organize all the other aspects of our events, they should be able to delegate publicity. Potential participants should know where and approx. when to look for information on upcoming CNC Events. CNC Publicity of events would have a consistent look, with all the must know information arranged so it s easy to find using CNC logo and photos that create interest in the event. Long before each event, we would advertise consistently in FaceBook, NewfTide, NCA Events Cal, and info placed prominently on the CNC Website as well as other club sites if they allow cross posting. The CNC Publicity Chair would work directly with each chair to gather info needed for each event. ~It was suggested during the meeting that the usage of an advertising template for all committee chairs to alter as needed would be beneficial. KP suggests a CNC policy be put in place for the Publicity Chair to communicate to Event Chairs. ACTION ITEMS Events: How do we get more people involved in events? I would like to see if any of my thoughts might help with people getting involved in more events. Maybe we could offer some training events, costume competitions, general health seminars - I met an awesome woman at a dog show who performs massages on dogs and 27

people. My old boy greatly benefited from it, and she is very reasonable. Anything that could appeal to the basic Newf owner who may not know about draft/water work (beginners class?) or does not show, etc. To get younger people involved, if there is a fee, maybe we can ask that they donate some time to help at a show, or water training, etc. That may wet their interest in getting more involved. COLONIAL NEWFOUNDLAND RESCUE UPDATE As I write this article for our Bear Fare Newsletter I am grieving for the loss of my father, Lester LeCompte. While my dad never really wanted a dog he always was there for my dogs and me. My first dog was a Golden Retriever that my dad took for car rides. I was 18 when I brought home this golden pup. Growing up my parents never wanted any animals because we traveled a lot. My mother was from Germany and she wanted to go home every other summer. My dad also had to travel some for work and we would go too. The last night of my dad s life I told him I needed to go home and take care of the dogs. He understood that. He knew it was for my work, rescue and my four personnel dogs. are thankful that the owners were able to either keep their dogs or find someone they knew to take them. We always hope that people can keep their dogs but when they cannot we hope they will contact us. One of our most recent dogs was wandering in the Richmond area for about two months. We received calls from locals that were trying to catch him. Finally animal control picked him up and he is now in one of our foster homes. He was full of ticks and Lyme positive. It makes me wonder why this poor dog was either dumped or lost. We hope to get him healthy and find a loving home for him. Special thanks to Sandy Lindquist for going above and beyond to assist during the last month. The beginning of 2017 was slow for our rescue. We did not get in many dogs. This summer has picked up and as this is written we have 2 in rescue and 1 more coming in this week. We have also had other calls but Stay tuned for fall rescue events on both websites and FaceBook. Goodbye to Bailey June 30, 2006 June 14, 2017 We said our final goodbye to our dear sweet Bailey Finn O Boyle the morning of June 14th, of congestive heart failure and old age for a 190-pound bundle of joy. Even up to the end he did everything he could to please us. I had always wanted a Newfoundland since I was a little girl and I finally got my wish in September 2006. He was a big ball of fluff and just as sweet as could be. He was always fun and loved people more than dogs. At the dog park he would greet each person first then head over to see the dogs. IN MEMORIUM He wanted to be right next to you leaning on you even up to the end. You could not miss his big paw going to your hand so you would go back to petting his beautiful head. He loved to swim in the pool and would always go in to rescue anyone who was swimming, you had to watch out for those big paws. His favorite spot was laying on the top step of the pool to cool down. He is sorely missed by all of us and especially Reilley his faithful companion of 7 years. We miss you Bailey and we know you are in doggie heaven running and playing once again. We will see you again. Love, Ellen, Richie, Brendan and Colin 30

SNICKERS GOING TO SCHOOL TO TEACH! At the request of Anne and Bob Blaicher s granddaughter, Snickers Blaicher visited a 5th grade class at an elementary school in Ashburn, VA on June 1, 2017. The children had just studied about the Lewis and Clark Expedition, including Lewis Newfoundland Seaman. They were amazed to see a dog the size of Snickers, of his coat and how friendly and low-keyed he was during his visit. Anne and Bob gave a brief orientation about the Newfie Breed, including what the breed was famous for, including facets of water rescue, as a working dog pulling fish lines and carts of firewood, lumber and fish, and carrying ammo and provisions in blizzard conditions during wartime. They also described the Gentle Giant s overall temperament and history. Anne and Bob showed the children how much food, treats, bone, and water Snickers consumes in a day. The children were not afraid of Snickers, and hardly even flinched even when getting slobbers on them (plenty of wet wipes furnished). One girl even said she did not want to wash off the slobber of her arm because it was a badge of honor. The only question of the day was who enjoyed the visit more, the children or Snickers? AND A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL Colonial Newfoundland Club Rescue (CNR) participates in a yearly event called the Reston Pet Fiesta. It is generally held around the first weekend in May and is held in Reston, Virginia in but there were at least several thousand people there while this writer was there. This writer drove up the day before the event and stayed in Manassas, Virginia. The drive from Williamsburg was just a little too long to do the morning of the event. Unfortunately, I am going to be Newfless until I get my hip replaced and I miss Candyman dearly. It was clearly good to see other Newfs at this event. keeping with its name. It is a major event with loads of pet related vendors and animal rescue groups. This writer has been informed that as many This writer was a bit late getting up the next morning. He did get on the road and got to Reston around 11:00. The group was already in place by that time and was busy giving out information about our Club and about Rescue. Donations were taken for Rescue and items were for sale to help support Rescue as well. Paula McPherson had an outfit on her dog with pockets for Rescue donations. The 2017 Pet Fiesta was a nice event in spite of the iffy weather. Kudos go out to Donna McConn and the members of CNR who participated. I look forward to going back with a Newf next year. as 10,000 people can attend, making it an excellent venue to promote the Colonial Newfoundland Club and Rescue. Submitted by Brad Cole This year s event was held May 6, 2017. Unfortunately, there was some rain the day of the event, making it ideal Newfoundland weather. This didn t seem to dampen the spirits of the CNC members in attendance or the other attendees. There may not have been 10,000 people in attendance over the course of the day, 32

OF NEWFOUNDLANDS AND SPRING FUN CHANGES TO OUR RESCUE! The Colonial Newfoundland Club (CNC) holds an annual event called Spring Fun Day. It is typically held in May and is typically held near centers of Club membership. This year s event was held on May 20, 2017 at Piney Run Park and Nature Center in Sykesville, Maryland. The venue was a beautiful location and the event was ably spearheaded by Brenda McKeel, the CNC Education chair. Twenty-five people and fifteen dogs attended the event. This writer left for the event on Friday, May 19 so that I would not have to drive from Williamsburg, Virginia to Sykesville, Maryland in the wee hours of the morning. The original plan was to stay in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania since it has always been one of my favorite places to visit. It is also a fairly easy drive from Gettysburg to Sykesville. Unfortunately, I had planned to use two free nights I had with the Wyndham group of hotels. There were several events going on in Gettysburg this particular weekend, so I had to stay at the Super 8 in Thurmont, Maryland in order to use my free nights. It turned out that I was glad that the room ended up being free as it was not up to the standard set by the Wyndham hotels up the road in Gettysburg. This writer woke up to perfect Newfoundland Dog weather the next day; it was cloudy, 60ish temperature wise and threatening rain. The trip to Sykesville was lovely and Piney Run Park was in the middle of a lovely country area surrounded by upscale farms. The park had a lake and the CNC s pavilion was in a nice location back in the woods. Many active CNCers were present and we all enjoyed the events, including a talk on elderly Newfs by Dr. Illuzzi, a local veterinarian. There was the typical cookout style lunch aptly cooked by Chuck Basham as well as a brown bag raffle and Newfie games for the owners and dogs. The event was an all around great time. I would like to thank Brenda McKeel, Chuck and Cookie Basham and the Darlings for help making this such a great event. Submitted by Brad Cole 33

CNC held its 21st Water Test at Lake Marburg in Codorus State Park on August 4th 6th, 2017. This year s test was dedicated to the memory of Daniel J. Stultz, Sr. Dan was an active member of CNC and Newf Champion who participated in many club activities, especially working dog events. By the end of this year s three-day event, 15 dog/handler teams and the hard-working CNC Stewarding Crew had tallied: 2 new Water Dogs, 1 Water Dog requalification, 2 new Water Rescue Dogs, and 3 Water Rescue Dog requalifications. Two new Versatility Newfoundland (VN) titles and one Working Achievement (WA) title were earned pending NCA approval. CNC s water test came weeks earlier in the season this year due to a schedule conflict with our site. As a result, this year s test was the first in some years that did not completely fill to capacity with a waiting list of alternate entrants. Several entrants, including our entire WRDX entry, needed more training time to prepare so we also experienced a larger number of exhibitors deciding to pull their entries in the weeks and days leading up to the test. Our numbers were 0 of our 5 WRDX slots, 2 of our 5 dedicated WRD-requal slots and 15 of our 25 available WD and WRD testing slots. NCA mentor-level judges Nancy McKee (VT) and Mary Jane Spackman (PA) did a great job as our judges. The weather cooperated on Friday and Sunday. On Friday, Christie Smith went two for two, handling Beacon to his 24th Water Rescue Dog requalification, eclipsing Michael Phelps gold medal tally and adding to Beacon s status as the top Water Rescue Dog. This was Beacon s tenth consecutive year of success in NCA water tests. For an encore, Christie and Spinnaker notched their second WRD requal. With only two entries, testing ended early. However, CNC stewards and entrants went above and beyond and put in a full day helping everyone who wanted to train. Saturday, a stiff breeze and some strong wind-driven current presented a significant challenge. Adding insult to injury, an over-night storm knocked out the electrical power at the site, ironically resulting in our participants being locked out of the brand new CNC 2017 WATER TEST 40 restroom facilities. An emergency porta-john was procured since there was no other restroom within a reasonable walking distance from the test site. Power was eventually restored and the new restrooms were re-opened by the end of the day. Despite many valiant efforts, Karen Doman and Kuma scored the only qualifying run. Sunday was a new day. In addition to Karen and Kuma s WD1, Test Secretary Kathy Holshey and Emma also earned their Water Dog title. Picking up where the juniors left off, the senior dogs put together some great runs. Even those who didn t qualify had some personal bests and looked to be on track for qualifying later this season. Highlights included Judi Randall and nine-year-old Karma launching off the boat to earn their WRD and clinch their VN pending NCA approval. Megan Morgan used her handling skills to great effect redirecting Titan on the life ring exercise. Titan finished strong, leaping powerfully to rescue Megan to earn their WRD and VN pending NCA approval. NCA reviewers will have one more major title to approve as Christie Smith and Spinnaker picked up their WRD3 completing all the requirements for their Working Achievement Title. Congratulations to all of our qualifiers! Enough can t be said to thank everybody who helped make CNC s 21st Water Test a success. Thanks to our judges, Nancy and Mary Jane. Special thanks to our Test Committee: Co-Secretaries Cindy Flowers and Kathy Holshey; Christie Smith, Chief Steward; Dru Kappe, Grounds; and Martha Coester, Hospitality. Thanks to Dwight Gorsuch for bringing his boat and rowing for junior dogs on Saturday. Kathy Paxton and Christi Smith provided our ring favors, qualifying and judges gifts. Peggy and Ron Darling contributed again this year with T-shirt and Brown Bag sales. Thanks to Don Sharkey for taking wonderful photos. Karen Steinrock promoted our event so well we had tremendous media coverage. Thanks to Kandy Adams for scheduling our training and test dates with Codorus State Park and for her live appearance with Fancy to publicize the event. Thanks to the whole Bystol family for stewarding and organizing Saturday s Pizza Party. Thanks to my Rainey Crew, Sarah and Jason, for stewarding and working hard before and after the test.
