The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is requiring the Town of Cumberland to cap the old "Stump Dump". For residents who are not familiar with the history of landfills in Cumberland, the old Stump Dump is located under what is now known as the Brush Dump/Composting Facility. In order for us to cap the Stump Dump, we must close the Brush Dump, remove all the material that is there, excavate and then cap the old dump material, and then move the composting material back to where it currently is located. This is quite an undertaking! We have scheduled this work to be done during the facilities slower, summer months. What this means to the residents is: The Brush Dump/Composting Facility will open the first weekend in April as usual. We will then close the facility June 17, 2016. Residents may not bring any material into the Brush Dump while it's closed! It is anticipated that the facility will reopen September 2, 2017, following its regular schedule until the normal season closing date of Thanksgiving Weekend. We apologize for the inconvenience and will keep you posted as we have more information. The 7th Annual Rabies Clinic will be held on January 14, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Cumberland Town Hall (290 Tuttle Road). While we love meeting all of our social media friends in real life, we would rather not do so because of a crash. Please remember in these winter conditions to slow down, increase your following distance, brake early, and remember that 4WD/AWD can be deceiving as it does not improve your vehicle's ability to stop. Less than one inch of snow can create slippery driving conditions. Thanks for keeping this in mind the next time you're driving in snow/ice conditions!
