Novice Bitch Amateur Owner Handler Bitch Bred-By-Exhibitor Bitch American Bred Bitch Open Bitch WINNERS BITCH Best of Breed Competition The following categories of dogs may be entered and shown in Best of Breed competition: Dogs that are Champions of Record. Dogs which according to their owners records have completed the requirements for a championship but whose championships are unconfirmed. The entry and showing of dogs whose championships are unconfirmed is limited to a period of 90 days from the date of the show where a dog completed the requirements for a championship according to the owner s records. If, at the end of the 90 day period, the championship of a dog has not been confirmed by AKC, no further entries of the dog for Best of Breed competition are to be made until its championship has been confirmed by AKC. Grand Champion Select When quality warrants, after BOB and BOS are awarded, a Select Dog (SD) and Select Bitch (SB) may be chosen from the remaining Champions (Non Regular Class winners that are Champions and Qualify for BOB are eligible) - (WD or WB are not eligible) (AKC Dog Show Rules, Chapter 3, Section 14 Effective 5-12-10) Awards of Merit The Judge of the Best of Breed competition may at her discretion award a maximum of Three (3) Awards of Merit. Amateur Owner Handler For dogs that are at least six months of age that are not champions. Dogs must be handled in the class by the registered owner of the dog and is limited to exhibitors who have not, at any point in time, been a professional handler, AKC approved conformation judge, or employed as an assistant to a professional handler. Additionally, members of the immediate family or household of a current professional handler are ineligible for this class (as defined in Chapter 11, Section 13). Professional handlers are defined as any person who belongs to a professional handlers organization, distributed rate cards, or otherwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay. Best Bred - By Exhibitor and BBE Eligibility All dogs entered in the Bred-By Class must be individually registered with the AKC. The person handling the dog must be a breeder of record of the dog and an owner of record of the dog. Family members must be both a breeder and owner of record to exhibit in the class. Any entry in the Bred-by-Exhibitor classes that is awarded Best of Breed or Best of Winners would automatically be Best Bred-by-Exhibitor. Only the dog or bitch not defeated in Bred-by-Exhibitor are eligible for the Best Bred-by-Exhibitor competition. Best Puppy Any entry in the puppy classes that is awarded Best of Breed or Best of Winners would automatically be Best Puppy. Only dogs not defeated in a puppy class are eligible for Best Puppy competition. Non - Regular Classes Involving Single Dog Entries Veteran Dogs (For Dogs 7 Years but under 10 years) Veteran Bitches (For Bitches 7 years but under 10 years) Veteran Dogs (For Dogs 10 Years of Age or older) Veteran Bitches (For Bitches 10 years of age or older) Neutered Dogs and Spayed Bitches may compete in the Veterans Classes only at independent specialties and by virtue of winning the class may compete for Best of Breed. (AKC Dog Show Rules, Chapter 14, Section 8.) Non - Regular Classes Involving Multiple Dog Entries NOTE: As the judges' decision in the Stud Dog/Brood Bitch Classes will be based on the merits of more than one dog or bitch, no one of the dogs or bitches making up the entry judged first in the class will be eligible to compete for Best of Breed by virtue of having won this class. Stud Dog Class For Stud Dogs and two of their Get. Stud dogs must be entered in the Stud Dog Class and must be shown in the ring with two of their Get. Owner of the Stud Dog need not necessarily be owner of the Get. While the merits of the Stud Dog are not to be considered in the placement of the entry, the Stud Dog must be examined to determine if it has a condition that would require its disqualification or excusal under the Dog Show Rules, AKC policy, or the standard for its breed. Get must be entered in a Regular Class, Best of Breed Competition or some other Non-Regular Class. Brood Bitch Class Same as Stud Dog Class except substitute Brood Bitch for Stud Dog and Produce for Get. As the judge s decision in the Stud Dog and Brood Bitch Classes will be based on the merits of more than one dog or bitch, no one of the dogs or bitches making up the entry judged first in the class will be eligible to compete for Best of Breed by virtue of having won this class. 7

NON-REGULAR CLASSES, INVOLVING SINGLE DOG ENTRIES Veteran Dogs (over 7 Years of Age) Veteran Bitches (Over 7 Years of Age) Neutered Dogs and Spayed Bitches may compete in the Veterans Classes only at independent specialties. (AKC Dog Show Rules, Chapter 14, Section 8.) Field/Hunt Dogs Field/Hunt Bitches Open to all with either a Hunt Test Title or a Field Trial placement. Winners of the above classes are eligible to compete in Best of Breed Competition if undefeated in other entered classes. NON REGULAR CLASSES FOR ALTERED DOGS ~ ALTERED OPEN & ALTERED PERFORMANCET here will be two classes for dogs and two classes for bitches. 1) ALTERED PERFORMANCE CLASS this class shall be for dogs who have attained an AKC Performance Title and are not Champions of Record. 2) ALTERED OPEN CLASS this class shall be for any altered dog. The Best Altered Dog and the Best Altered Bitch will be judged and one shall be awarded BEST ALTERED. Show Altered class entry on entry form under Additional entry box. Write in Alter. Perf. Or Alter. Open. JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP ~ NEW RULES EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2005 ~ AKC Junior Handler Numbers are assigned by AKC and required for entry in Junior Showmanship Competition. NOVICE - This class shall be for boys and girls who are at least 9 years old and under 18 years old on the day of the show and who at the times of entries close have not won three (3) first place awards, with competition person, in a Novice Class at a licensed or member show. JUNIOR - A boy or girl who are at least 9 years old and under 12 years old on the day of the show INTERMEDIATE -A boy or girl who are at least 12 years old and under 15 yrs old on day of show. SENIOR - A boy or girl who are at least 15 years old and under 18 years old on the day of show. OPEN - This class shall be for boys and girls who are at least 9 years old and under 18 years old on the day of the show, who have won 3 first place awards in a Novice Class in a licensed or member show, with competition present. The winner of a Novice Class shall automatically become eligible, upon notice to the Open Class ring steward, to enter and compete in the Open Class a the same show provided the win is the (3rd) first place award with competition and further providing there are one or more Junior Handlers competing in the Open Class. JUNIOR - A boy or girl who are at least 9 years old and under 12 years old on the day of the show INTERMEDIATE -A boy or girl who are at least 12 years old and under 15 yrs old on day of show. SENIOR - A boy or girl who are at least 15 years old and under 18 years old on the day of show. BEST JUNIOR HANDLER A club offering Junior Showmanship may offer a prize for Best Junior Handler. The prize must be described in the premium list in accordance with Rules Applying to Dog Shows Chapter 5, Section 4. The Junior Handler placed first in each of the regular Junior Showmanship Classes, if undefeated in any other Junior Showmanship Class at that show, shall automatically be eligible to compete for this prize. JUNIOR HANDLERS who win a third Novice Class after the Closing of entries for a show may transfer their entry from the Novice Class to the Open Class provided that this transfer is made by the Show Secretary at least one-half hour prior to the scheduled start of the earliest conformation judging or one-half hour prior to the scheduled start of Junior Showmanship judging at the Show, whichever is earlier.
