AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING MECHANICAL TASK Sea King Main Wheel & Tail Rotor Blades Removal/Inspection/Installation Objective: To safely remove, inspect and install a Tail Rotor Blade Time allotted: 1 hour COMPETITOR INSTRUCTIONS 1. The timing for the task will commence immediately after the judges Health & Safety brief. 2. Plan your time carefully to ensure that you are able to complete the task within the allotted time. 3. Ensure that you have read and fully understood the task objective, the time allocated for the task and all supporting resource material provided within this Competitor Task Sheet. 4. If you are unsure about any aspect of the task then you may ask the task judge for guidance. It is important to note that depending on the nature of the question asked the judge may decide that guidance is not appropriate in the interest of the competition. 5. When you are content with what is required you are to commence your work. 6. Should you sustain an injury which requires first aid treatment then you are to bring it immediately to the attention of the task judge who will determine the course of action require. Whilst a course of action and subsequent consequential actions are complied with, the event clock will be stopped. The clock will be restarted upon subsequent event recommencement. 7. Competitors may leave the area for comfort breaks but the event time will not be stopped. 8. Judges may be required to carry out stage checks as deemed necessary. These will be kept to a minimum and carried out as quickly as possible. 9. Marking will be in accordance with the marking scheme. Marks will be deducted for inaccuracies beyond tolerances as indicated on the drawing and the marking schedule. Page 1 of 5
HEALTH & SAFETY A Health & Safety brief will be conducted immediately prior to the task commencing. It is the individual s responsibility to take reasonable care of themselves and others whilst at work. This includes the correct wearing of appropriate clothing and footwear for the activity being undertaken. Any specialised Personal Protective Equipment required for an activity will be made available by the competition host. Judges are to provide direction on any actions that are in contravention of the Health & Safety regulations and where appropriate they may deduct marks for such non-compliances. Continual disregard for Health & Safety by a competitor during a task may result in the task being terminated prematurely. Page 2 of 5
COMPETITOR BRIEF Tail Rotor Blade removal, inspect and installation Scenario You have been tasked to carry out a maintenance procedure which involves the removal, inspection and installation of a Tail Rotor Blade. Maintenance Procedure 1 Preparation 1.1 Appropriate PPE for the task 1.2 Correct interpretation of maintenance procedure 1.3 Awareness of Health and Safety 2 Preliminary Operations 2.1 Gain access to the tail rotor-head 3 Removal CAUTION 1: Make sure that each tail-rotor blade and its tail-rotor head sleeve are identified with the same colour code. This is to make sure that the tai-rotor blades are installed correctly. CAUTION 2: Do not turn the bolts when you remove them. 3.1 Loosen the two nuts at the root end of the tail-rotor blade 3.2 Use a hammer, with a soft face, to release the bolts. 3.3 Make a record of the position of the nuts, the washers and the bolts. 3.4 Hold the tail-rotor blade and remove the nuts, the washers and the bolts. 3.5 Remove the tail-rotor blade from the tail-rotor head sleeve. Make sure that you do not cause damage to the shims. 3.6 Install the bolts with the necessary shims, the washers and the nuts in the tail-rotor head sleeve. Install in the positions you recorded at Operation 3.3 3.7 Put the tail-rotor blade, with its leading edge down, in a felt-lined rack. 4 Inspection 4.1 Clean and examine the mating surfaces of: - The root of the tail-rotor blade - The tail-rotor head sleeve 4.2 Examine the items that follow: (a) The bolt holes used to attach the tail-rotor blade to the tail-rotor head sleeve for: - Cracks - Scores - Wear. (b) The bolts. (c) The shims for serviceability and the correct thickness. 5 Installation CAUTION 1: CAUTION 2: Before you install the tail-rotor blade make sure that: - It is identified with the correct colour code - It is the same Mod standard as the other tail rotor blades. You must not put tail-rotor blades of different Mod standards on the same tail rotor head. Page 4 of 5
CAUTION 3: The surfaces of the tail-rotor blade are identified INBOARD and OUTBOARD. Make sure that you install the tail-rotor blade in the correct position. 5.1 Put the tail-rotor blade in position in the tail-rotor-head sleeve. Install the applicable shims between the tail-rotor-blade and the tail-rotor-head sleeve. 5.2 Apply a thin layer of compound (C34) to the bolts, washers and the nuts. CAUTION: Do not use too much force when you install the bolts. Scores on the bolt holes can cause cracks. If too much force is necessary, try another bolt with the correct part number. Do not turn the bolts when you install them. 5.3 Attach the tail-rotor blade to the tail-rotor-head sleeve with the bolt, the washers and the nuts. 5.4 Torque the nuts to 670lbf in (771.84 kgf cm). 5.5 Remove all the unwanted compound (C34) 6 Final Operations 6.1 Make sure the work area is clean and there are no loose objects. 6.2 Remove all the tools and equipment from the aircraft.
