A Pet Owner s Guide to Joint Health for Dogs

Transcription:

Susquehanna Trail Dog Training Club June 2015 Old Friends by Connie Cuff The following information was taken from the Whole Dog Journal and is for your information only. Anything I print in the Newsletter can be used to guide you in choosing and researching what is best for your dog. There is a lot of discussion these days on what kind of food should I feed my dog. The answer is not simple, but you should always read labels and it is suggested that you should rotate between 3-4 of the best every 4-6 months. The reason being that the foods are made by different manufacturers and contain different protein sources. All complete and balanced pet foods, even the ones made of the best ingredients, contain a premixed vitamin/mineral supplement. This is needed because many of the nutrients present in the food ingredients are destroyed in the manufacturing process. The point is many of us have been conditioned to feed our dogs the same food day in and day out. Some manufacturers and veterinarians say it is pointless to change a dog s food. But a dog who eats the same diet everyday may end up with nutrient deficiency or imbalance. Switching from one source of protein to another occasionally can help prevent the development of food allergies. When switching foods, spend a few days replacing the old food with the new gradually. This gives the dog s digestive bacteria time to adjust to its new job. Don t hesitate to discontinue feeding any food your dog has a bad reaction to, no matter how much you trust its manufacturer. The hallmarks of high-quality food include: Superior sources of protein - either whole fresh meats or single-source meal (ex. Chicken meal rather than poultry meal) A whole meat source as one of first two ingredients Whole, unprocessed grains, vegetables and other foods. Foods to avoid: Those containing meat by-products Artificial preservatives (BHA, BHT or Ethoxyquin) Artificial colors and sweetners I picture each day as if it were a happy dog looking at me. I may not be in the mood. But the dog always wants to play. Trust the dog. --John Patrick Shanley, playwright Till next time, Connie STDTC Newsletter June 2015 Page 1

Minutes (May 5, 2015) submitted by Karen Sodrick President s Report es will move to the Shikellamy State Park Marina on Tuesday, May 19. Advanced es will be held at 6:15-7:00 and Beginners at 7:15-8:00. In case of inclement weather classes will meet Wednesday during the same time periods. Notification will be by email or on our website. Everyone must sign the tablet before class as our insurance covers members while we are training at the park. Please be aware of other visitors to the park and always have your dog under control. If anyone, child or adult, wishes to pet your dog instruct them to approach from the side instead of face to face. Also, as warmer weather approaches please have water available for your dog. Saturday May 9 we are at the Mt. Carmel Lions Club Street Fair from 10:30-11:00. Please plan to be there by 10:15 if you plan on attending. Everyone enjoys visiting with our dogs and we also receive a donation from the Lions. Also on Saturday there is a Blessing of the Animals Pet Fair in Mifflinburg United Methodist Church on Market Street from 10:00-2:00. Marjean will be in charge of our table there and it would be nice if some of our dogs were there also. We still need people to sign up to carry the flag in the Lewisburg 4th of July Parade on Saturday, June 27. Any help would be appreciated. Marjean will begin her Star Puppy on May 19th and the class is full. There is a waiting list if you know of anyone interested. Respectfully submitted by Karen Sodrick STDTC Newsletter June 2015 Page 2
