VOLUME1, ISSUE 2 FEBRUARY 12, 2010 BEARS ON BROADWAY MESA COUNTY VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT 51 Broadway Pre-School Teacher by Daniel I interviewed Dana Lee Mahoney-Haas also known as Ms. Dana, the pre-school teacher. Most people don t know about her so here are some facts about her teaching career. She wanted to teach ever since she was in kindergarten because she loved school. She has taught kindergarten, 1 st, 5 th, and pre -school. She has subbed kindergarten-5 th. She went to Columbus Elementary in 1 st -5 th, Orchard Mesa Jr. High in middle-school, Grand Junction High School in High School, Mesa College and The Colorado Christian University in college. She is teaching pre-school because it sounded like an interesting challenge. In the past she has had a boy hamster named Teresa (!?!), a boy guinea pig named Butterscotch, a girl salamander named Sally, and fish. She has been teaching for 24 years. She has never had a dull moment, and always challenging and regarding. The children at the preschool are 3-4-5. She has a morning and afternoon class, separate, and the limit of kids total is 30. What a amazing teacher! We re eating cake And having fun While girls are trying To get the shaving done! Marley by Isy My dog is a yellow lab. Just like in the movie Marley and Me! Except we didn t name him after the movie. We. Me and my mom named him after Bob Marley, the singer. Marley s middle name is Bob, Marley Bob. He is playful, fun and athletic. He loves to chase bicycles, cats, dogs, and anything that flies. Yes, including air planes (which as you know he never catches) Once he ate a ladybug. Then, well he slept for the rest of the day. He ate a chocolate cake once and is living now. He s my guard dog. One time a dog bit me and Marley tried to strangle her. I love my dog Marley! The Valentine Argument by Macy Valentines is the most wonderful time of the year! Nu uh! It is icky yucky and disgusting! VOLUME1, ISSUE 2 Page 3 Spring Break by Chloe A lot of people are going places for spring break. Almost everybody is going some were different. Some people are going to Disneyland and some are going to Costa Rica and also Mexico. But some people are just going to their aunts. People just stay home and play paint ball or go to Powderhorn and snow board or go to the Utah arches. Spring break is a time to relax and have a super fun time!!! Cabbage Salad Taco by Ashlyn Are you looking for a healthy snack for your kids after school? Well, instead of letting your kids sit around and eat junk food, make them get up and make themselves Cabbage Salad Taco. It is a good way to make your kids energetic and it is very healthy. Try it, it might even make them pay attention to you! Here's what you do... peel one piece of cabbage off and then you make salad how ever you like it and wrap the cabbage around it like a taco and there you have it! A Cabbage Salad Taco! Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code by Tyler This book is great for 5 th to 7 th graders but a little hard for 4 th graders. In this book 13 year old Artemis fowl has a principal (body guard) but when Artemis makes something called the c-cube someone named Arno Blunt meets with Artemis but Blunt does something to Artemis s principal (body guard) and Blunt is out to get Artemis and the c-cube. But it takes an eternity to hack it. You will like this book if you like action, violence, & adventure. So if you re looking for a GREAT book then read Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code. There are other books in this series. What We do in Library by Cody In library we check out of course. Another thing we do is play a computer game. This no regular computer game. You learn something about how to sort books. Also, it teaches you to put books in the right place instead of putting them in the wrong place which is what a lot of people do. There are three games: shelving, sorting, and recording. In shelving you put books in alphabetical order then you use the dewy decimal system. I don t know what you do in recording or sorting because I have played those two games yet.

NEWSLETTER TITLE Page 4 Book Review: Eragon by Daniel I think everybody should read Eragon! This is an adventure-fiction book about a boy who lives in a far-away land, Alagaesia (al-uh-gay-zee -uh), whose name is Eragon. He finds a stone and it turns out to be a dragon egg. He has to save the land from Galbatorix and on his journey he has many adventures! If you want to figure out if he saves his land and makes it to the Varden, you re going to have to read it! I recommend this to anyone 3 rd and up, who loves to read adventures, this book has 400+ pages and no pictures, so be prepared! Call of the Wild by Errett Call of the of Wild by Jack London is a really good book. I would recommend this book to people who like advanced books. This book is about a dog named Buck. He first is a house dog then he learns how to be an outdoors dog. He first learns how to stay warm in the winter, and then he learns how to fight. That really helps him. If you want to know what happens to Buck you will have to read this book. Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen By Gaven If you like adventure movies or action movies then it s time to buy TRANS FORM- ERS 2. This movie is rated for 13 year olds and older. This movie is about a group of robots trying to find a cube called the ALLSPARK that has the power to destroy the world. I like this movie because I like action movies. Holes Book Review by Isy Holes is a great book to read. It s by Louis Sachar. This Fiction book is a survival and a great friendship book. I personally think that third and fourth graders should read this book. It s about Stanley Yelnats. Stanley always seems to get himself at the wrong place at the wrong time. He takes place in an adventure of a life time, with a little help from a friend! But is his friend the reason why he s cursed? If it s climbing the Big Thumb, or stealing Clyde Livingston s sneakers, there s always an adventure waiting for STANLEY!

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 Page 5 Yorkshire Terriers by Hailey Have you ever wanted a pet that would be small, cuddly, and playful? Then trust me, you will love a Yorkshire Terrier!!! A Yorkshire Terrier stands about 6 to 12 inches tall. They are black and brown and really friendly!!! They enjoy going on walks and act like a big dog when they are around one!!! They also love to learn new tricks!!! What I like about Yorkshire Terriers is they are not always one size. Some are tiny, some are medium, but I enjoy the bigger size. That way you don t accidentally step on them! You will never get bored with a Yorkshire Terrier!!! Mountain Man Writing by Hannah In 4 th grade social studies class we are writing about mountain men. We are writing made up stories but they have to have true facts in them. I think that a lot of kids can write good stories about the life of a mountain man. I remember when Mr. Meer read Mr. Tucket, the story about a mountain man who traveled around the Colorado Mountains. Mrs. Heath Interviewed by Julia You may know Mrs. Heath just as a teacher but do you really know her. I interviewed her to see the real inside. This is Mrs. Heath s last year and I asked her what she was going to do when she retires. She said she will work in the outdoors teaching children the importance of keeping our environment beautiful for the next generation. And why, because it is really important to have children appreciate nature and the environment. Because we only protect what we love, so children need to love the environment so they will protect it. Outside of teaching she likes to snorkel in the ocean. She likes it in Hawaii s warm water. She likes to teach math, writing, reading, and science. That s what I learned about Mrs. Heath. Mrs. Geest by Chloe You all might know Mrs. Geest here at Broadway Elementary School. Well I had time to stop by and ask her about herself. She has 4 family members, 1 girl and 1 boy. The girl s name is Gina and the boy s name is Lane. Besides her beautiful children she has a lovely dog. She lives right across the street from Broadway Elementary. In that house she has many baseballs and her family loves baseball. This is what I found out about Mrs. Geest and her lovely family.

Super Bowl 44 by Karl Last Sunday, in the Sun Life Stadium. was the biggest game of the season, Super Bowl 44. The Saints and the Colts were the lucky teams to have a chance to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy. So they started, Colts were on top at the first half. At the half time show, the band named The Who from the 60 s performed. In the second half the Saints came back and won by the final score 31-17. I thought the Colts were going to win but its cool the Saints won because they ve never been to the Super Bowl and the Colts have been more than once. That was one of the best Super Bowls ever. It was watched by over 1,000,000 people. It was the most watched Super Bowl EVER!

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 Page 7 Here at Broadway We celebrate only a few holidays, and the holiday that we celebrate in February is Valentine s Day. Valentine s Day is a day to celebrate love! Valentine s is a day to care for each other, Also you need to be nice and care, care for the others around you. Also on Valentine s you need to spend time with your family. Most classes have Valentine s parties. Valentine s parties are when you kids give each other little candies or notes. Valentine s Day by Katlyn Cats by Katlyn Cats are ruff and scruffy They like to play with string They scratch and bite when they re scared But some cats like dogs and other stuff there scared of For example a cat could hit a dog on the nose to play Or when a cat is scared it would run from a dog So that is how cats live for most of their lives of course until they get old then they get very lazy and nap all the time. Safety by Kyle Do you know why you should walk, not run? Well, you could break a bone. Trust me I broke my nose. When you break a bone you miss some days in school. I did. Wearing a cast is sort of annoying. Why you might ask? Well when you break your arm or nose or, anything you broke, it has a cast and if you need to scratch it, too bad. It is also very hard to take a shower. Walking is so much safer and you don t break a bone. So maybe you should think about walking and not running. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows By Tristen Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is the best movie ever. It s a good family movie and if you are a big fan of Harry Potter this is one of the best movies in the series. Did you know that Deathly Hallows is going to be made into two movies, it s that long? So if you are looking for a good movie you should buy The Half Blood Prince but you will have to wait for Deathly Hallows. It will be out before you know it.

You can hit a baseball with the Wii remote and catch it with the Wii remote. Fielding is also done with the Wii remote. Only buy it for Wii, it s the most fun. If you don t know how to hit a big homer then I can tell you how. First, you hold down the button A then wait for the ball to get to the plate and swing half way. If it s in the field then this is how to run really fast. You shake the Wii remote fast and that s how you go really fast.

His father says to go shoot somewhere. But as Mr.Tucket is about to fire, what will happen to him? What happens to his family? What happens to his home? You will have to read to find out more and what will happen to Francis Tucket! Gymnastics by Tully Strict, strict, strict Why do they have to be so strict! MESA COUNTY VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT 51 The News At Broadway. Stray Dog at Broadway By Tully Is that you coffin? Burple! Answers by Lexi Something abnormal happened here at Broadway elementary. A black dog came roaming into our campus on Thursday January 28, 2010. Some teachers and staff ran out trying to catch the dog. Unfortunately they couldn t even get close enough to read the dogs tags. The dog was obviously terrified because he or she was barking frantically at the fourth grade doors. Later that day at recess a group of fourth grade girls tried to lure the dog to them and give it water. Teachers told them to leave it alone a few students told them that too. Luckily no one got hurt. So if you own a dog please make sure it isn t roaming around. And if you have a black dog please make sure it isn t wandering the streets. She batted her eyes! Riddle: You look in the mirror, you see what you saw, grab the saw, cut the mirror in half, two halves make a hole you climb through the hole. Riddle: You re not eating right! Jelly fish! Ruff!
