HUMANE SOCIETY OF GREATER DAYTON Pawsitive Progress Summer 2015 Woman Pleads Guilty to 7 Counts of Animal Cruelty Recently, the New Lebanon courts found Brenda Moore guilty with seven counts of cruelty and neglect toward 81 farm animals removed from her property by the Humane Society on July 12, 2014. In July, Chief Humane Agent Sheila Marquis removed the animals from her residence including goats, ducks, turkeys, chickens, rabbits and a pig. All animals were extremely malnourished, unhealthy and living in unfit conditions with no food or clean water present. In addition, to the seven counts of cruelty/neglect, Moore also received five years of monitored probation and jail time that was suspended. For nearly a year, while awaiting a verdict in this case, these animals have been in foster homes receiving the proper medical care, shelter, nutrition and love they deserve. Since these animals have been signed over to the Humane Society, they have all found permanent homes to live out their life in a safe and loving environment. This year we will be celebrating the five year anniversary since becoming a no-kill shelter and we are proud to say we now have an average save rate of 96% for animals at our facility. Within these five years, our staff, board members and volunteers have all work tirelessly to make a positive impact on our community and on the animals we help. As an organization, we are constantly evolving to find new and innovative ways to help more animals in need right within our community. Whether it is through the creation of our nursery to save newborn kittens or working with other shelters with high euthanasia rates to transfer pets to our facility, we want to ensure all animals are valued and loved. Through our Trap-Neuter-Return program we are fighting cat overpopulation in a proactive and humane way. By trapping stray or community cats within Montgomery County and then spaying/neutering, vaccinating and ear-tipping them, we are able to stop unwanted litters of kittens. We also take cruelty and neglect very seriously and through these cases we get many animals into our shelter in poor condition. We are happy that thanks to the support of individuals just like you were are able to reahabilitate these sick and injured animals to give them the second chance they deserve. Whether it takes one month or one year, our devoted team will do everything in their power to find each animal their forever home. We are very excited for the future of our organization and see nothing but great things coming down the pipeline. MeowZa Surpasses 2,500 Cat Adoptions Since opening it s doors, we are happy to report that the MeowZa Cat Boutique, located inside the Dayton Mall adopted its 2,500 cat! Little Pixie went to a loving, forever home and now has a new best friend to play with and love for many years to come! Congrats to all pet parents who found their new family members at MeowZa! Book Fair Benefits Pets The Friends of Books Foundation will be sponsoring their 44th annual book fair November 13-15 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. There will be approximately 200,000 books, CDs, records and more all priced to go in three short days! There will also be a silent auction of rare books and a Collectibles Corner of unusual books as well as 40 other categories. Friday there is an admission of $15 at 10 a.m. and a $5 admission from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday admission is free from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Plus, Sunday is free admission and regular books and records are $7 per bag, including tax, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, Aullwood Center and Farm, House of Bread and the Human Race Theater. Dispelling Myths with 7 Reasons to Foster Kitten season is upon us! At any given time, our organization can have hundreds of animals within our foster program. The demand is always there. However, when talking about fostering, we often hear many of the same reasons as to why people don t become fosters. Today, we are here to dispel some of the common myths and show how easy and rewarding becoming an animal foster can be. Myth 1 I might get attached Yes, you may get attached to your foster pet, but no matter how difficult it is to bring your animal back to the shelter you know that in the long run you are helping to save a life. When you take a foster animal into your home it gives the shelter room to help other animals. It also allows the shelter to learn more about an animal s personality and see how they act in a home environment, which helps us find them the perfect forever home. Myth 2 There are plenty other foster homes Sadly, in our community there are far more animals in need than there are fosters to help. The need for fosters is always great and we have many types of animals that need some additional love in foster care including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, farm animals and much more. At our shelter, we have lots of people who will take kittens and puppies, but few who will take adults and even fewer who will take sick or injured animals. With the need being so great for fosters, every person is needed! Myth 3 I can t afford to take another animal One of the perks to fostering is that you have the support of the shelter. With fosters in our program, the Learn About Fostering! This means we pay for medical expenses and help to provide supplies and food for our foster families. Myth 4 I don t have the space Space is not typically an issue when it comes to fostering a pet. All it takes is a small spare bedroom or office, a bathroom or even a corner where you can set up a playpen cage (which you can borrow from the Humane Society). Remember, whatever space you have at home is probably more than the animal has at the shelter now. Myth 5 A shelter pet may get my pets sick Some of our wonderful fosters choose to take in animals that are sick or healing from an injury. This special one-on-one attention benefits the animal so much and can help them rehabilitate. However, if there are other animals in your home we have a few basic tips that can help keep your owned pets safe including basic health protocols such as washing your hands between handling animals and wearing an overshirt when handling the foster animals. We also recommend that a sick animal be kept in a separate room. We do not give fosters special-needs animals unless they are specifically trained and feel comfortable caring for them. Myth 6 My pets won t tolerate a foster pet Yes, your pets will know the second you bring another animal into the home, but if you have a separate room to keep your foster pets their interaction won t be a problem. Just make sure and give as much love to your owned pets as you do your foster pets and everyone will be happy. Myth 7 I already have a foster animal Well, if you are already fostering animals, congrats! Way to go! You are making a difference! If you are already fostering an animal you are already impacting a life, but why stop at one. The more animals you are comfortable in helping, the greater impact you will make!

TNR Program Works to Fight Overpopulation In the first half of 2015, we are happy to report that through our Trap-Neuter-Return program, the Humane Society has been able to spay or neuter more than 350 stray cats within the City of Dayton. This program is a humane and effective way to lower the number of unwanted litters of cats in our community and works to create a safe and healthy environment for the cats within the Miami Valley.
