Page 4 Giant Steps: Call for Submissions In 2013, 51 Giants earned their CH. 11 Giants earned their GCH. The next issue of Giant Steps will be the Breeder/ Companion Issue and will be released in June. Here are a few features I'm working on and would love your help: I know there are several new puppies in your households and I would like to feature them in this issue. Please send me a picture of your puppy along with their call and registered names and a brief tale of their antics. You may remember in the December issue, a few Breeder Vignettes. We have more breeders out there that I'm sure our members would like to read about. Please send me a short vignette (1-2 paragraphs) about the dog that you feel exemplifies your breeding program, along with a picture. I'm working on an article containing a list of things that potential puppy buyers should look for when selecting a breeder. Please send me your key 'wants' from a breeder. If you would like to write an article, have ideas of articles you would like to see in upcoming Steps, or submit ads, pictures, other content, please contact Lori Clark (loriclark612@gmail.com). The deadline for the June issue is May 15th. Thank you. Page 6 Sincere thank you to Enid Lagree for supplying me with the materials for this section. The book Yvonne Shcilla wrote and she published is a treasure! Copies of The Giant Schnauzer in The United States: 1930 2005 are still available. The selections provided are copyright material. Looking Back More on Carlo Pictured below: This head study of Ch Carlo Von Saldern, by the famous photographer Dauer, appeared in Ernst Von Otto s book, German Dogs in Word and Picture, which was printed by Anton Kampfe in 1928, in Jena, Germany. Pictured above: Ch Carlo von Saldern This photograph of Ch Carlo von Saldern was the breed illustration in the American Kennel Club s The Complete Dog Book up to 1960. Grandson of Bazi v Wetterstein, Carlo was the 1928 German Sieger. He sired fourteen litters in Germany before he was imported by James Mitchell Hoyt of North Stamford, Connecticut, and became the breeds second American champion in April 1931. Carlo proceeded to sire seven more litters in the United States and his name appears in almost all early pedigrees including Ago Farm, Wilsona, Teufelseck, both the German and the American Zeppelinstein, Imperial, Vigilant, Tueblu, Windenburg, Hi-View, Burgholzle, Krayenrain, Camoli, El Lobo, Deberic, Dolric, Ebenholtz, Silber Wald. Therefore, later lines evolving from these kennels also trace to Carlo. Some of the contemporary kennels would include Attishom, Blackbeard, J-Starr, Skansen, and Sonnenschein. "The Giant Schnauzer in The United States: 1930 2005" by Yvonne Schilla, edited by Enid S. Lagree, 2005. The head study appears on the front cover and the full body shot on the title page.

Member Profile: Pat Trotter Page 7 Work: Staff Assistant/ Project Manager Kentucky Department of Education Office of Innovation Giants: CH Momentumm Senorita Alegria RN NF OA OAJ call name "Alee" born Dec 1, 2000 and Momentumm River of Stars - call name "Rio" born April 9, 2010 right now his only title is "clown" GSCA Membership: steady GSCA member for about 15 years but was a member 30 years ago when I had my first Giant. Why a GS? I always loved the breed and got my first Giant "Danny" from Evelyn O'Shaughnessey. She put me through the ringer before she sold to me because I worked and she wasn't sure I would have time for the dog. His name was Terresta's Danny Boy Deluxe if I recall correctly and I was living in Maryland at the time. Sadly we lost Danny when he was two and then Zack came into my life, Arlingfires Zackrieger. I was living in Chicago at the time and Zack was 18 months and needing to be rehomed. He was from Joan Groneman and I had him until he died at age 14+. I didn't do much with him except have fun with him. He used to come on trail rides with me when I rode my horse and was always around the barn and the horses. I was working at Arlington Park Racetrack at the time and for awhile lived at the track - so he was a familiar site and often in my office with me at the track. You didn't open my office door quickly and just pop in when he was there! He was always ready to protect me. I then moved around for a couple of winters and while in New Orleans for the racing season at the Fairgrounds I got Daisy, my pepper/salt Giant. She was a little dear and she and Zack became best friends. Daisy completed her CD and then I was moving down to Kentucky and so we did not do any more training. She lived to be 14+. After losing Daisy I was given the opportunity to get one of Chris Lietzau's Giants from a woman in Florida who had to give him up. Momentum Better N Ever "Baron" was about 15 months old when I got him and my first hard coated Giant. For awhile we trained in search and rescue but because I wanted him to be a disaster dog we did not continue. At the time there were no FEMA teams in the area and limited opportunities to train with the right people. The commitment was also more than I could sign on to at the time and the cost of traveling frequently to places to train got prohibitive. He was doing great and I think would have been a terrific search dog and would have qualified for a FEMA team eventually. Meanwhile, Alee came into my life as a 10 week old puppy and from the start it was clear she was the princess and expected to be treated as such! That has not changed over the past 13 years! LOL She was my first Champion and while obedience was never her thing she was a terrific agility dog. She and Baron were best of friends and when he died she Photo courtesy of Pat Trotter. L-R: Rio, Pat and Alee. mourned him for quite sometime. Several months after he went to the rainbow bridge we went to our beach house in New Jersey and Alee went upstairs into Baron's crate and stayed there all day! Consequently, when we added Rio to the family she hated him and for two years made his life miserable! They are now great friends. Rio has started some herding, is learning agility and has started learning to track. He is probably the smartest Giant I have owned and challenges me every day. He is also by far the biggest clown I have lived with. We are inseparable and I think Baron's spirit lives in Rio. Rio has become a "Linus". He has a huge old blanket that he drags around everywhere! Up the stairs, down the stairs, out the doggie door, etc. This is the second one - the first was a queen size quilt that eventually disintegrated!! Rio is raw fed, Alee is on kibble and canned - he and Alee love their Trader Joe's Jerky strips as treats. Stuffed toys don't last long around this household. A new favorite toy for Rio is a heavy soft plastic baton which he loves to fetch. We use toys for training a lot or as rewards after a training session. He will always go to the van and start pulling out all of the toys from the toy bag! Apart from the Giants I have a small photo business www.twogiants.com, love to travel, garden, attend the opera, and spend time at the beach house in New Jersey.

Page 8 2014 National Specialty News We are entering into the New Year with another exciting event planned for this year s GSCA National Specialty. This year s National will be held at Purina Farms in conjunction with the Bouvier des Flanders club s National, beginning on Tuesday, October 28th with our performance events, seminars, and welcome party and finishing up on Sunday, November 2nd with our second Regional specialty. We have lots of exciting plans for this year s event. The annual banquet will be on Friday, October 31st, so it only makes sense that we have a Halloween theme for the celebration too. We all know creating these special events take lots of planning, manpower, and of course donations. All donations will be appreciated, and will be used for the trophies, hospitality, judges, and of course paying for the rental of our nation s premier dog show sight, among other expenses. In the past we have had many folks dedicate their donations to that special giant that was once in their life, or that special club member that may have held a place in your heart through their dedication and mentorship. These dedications can appear in the premium list and the catalog if received early enough, so start getting those catalog ads and dedications ready!!!! Thank you to all the members that have helped create these very special events and memories in the past, and looking forward to creating new ones this year...all donations to be sent to Kim Demchak, along with your dedications and requests. Enclosed you will find a donation request list. Please indicate your choices. We will attempt to honor each person s 1 st choice, but in the case of two requests for the same trophy, the one that is postmarked first will receive the priority. Make your requests early! For posting in the catalog, the deadline is June 15, 2014. Trophy Donations National 2014 The monetary amount of the sponsorship does not reflect the value of the trophy. All money collected through donations and sponsorships are used to meet the financial obligations incurred in the process of holding the 2014 GSCA National, the Eastern Regional Specialties and the Club events associated with these Specialties.
