The Lost Coast H O W L E R Editor: Barbara Stelz AUGUST 2007 LCKC BOARD OF DIRECTORS Officers: JILL OTTO President * MICHELLE DOSTAL Vice President * IRENE HETRICK Secretary * PATTY MENDES Treasurer * Members of the Board: DEBBIE ENNS NICK MENDES DEB ST. MYERS NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY, AUGUST 21 at MRS. MENDES' HOME 405 Craig Street Ferndale Board Mtg. - 6:30 p.m. Regular Mtg. - 7:00 President's Corner... Wow! We made it through two great show weekends. Both the breed show and the agility trial were great successes. One more thank you to all who helped. Welcome to the new club members Gemini Herzog, Scott and Linda Harrison, and Carolyn Neal, who joined at the June meeting. Pamlyn Millsap, Josephine Morrissey, J. Steven and Kelly Porter, and Tiffany and Mark Schmitcke all joined LCKC at the July meeting. We have two more events coming up, both on September 8th. The Farm Store is holding their annual Pet Fair from 10am - 4pm. Our club will be setting up a table with club and AKC information. Contact Rose Kessler if you can volunteer some time to man the table. We are also sponsoring a CERF (eye) clinic. Registration information for the clinic is contained on Page 6 of this newsletter, but if you have any questions, feel free to contact myself or Barb Stelz. Please contact us also if you are able to help at the clinic. See you at the upcoming meeting in Ferndale. Jill Otto Directions: From Main Street Ferndale, turn Left onto Brown Street. Brown dead ends on Craig. Park here. All welcome!!!

-2- We have some outstanding Brags and Wags to report... The Pembrats have been busy since the last newsletter. At the Golden Gate Pembroke Welsh Corgi Fanciers All-Breed Agility trial on June 23rd, Fern earned her MACh 2 title with her 20th Double Q. She already has enough points for her MACh 3, so with her Double Q on June 24th she only has 19 Double Qs to go for MACh 3. A couple other things happened with Fern on the 24th. She finished her Open FAST title, and with her 6 qualifying runs (3 First Place, 2 Second Place, and 1 Fourth Place), she took the High Scoring Corgi award which was a rosette that dwarfed her MACh ribbon and a cash prize of $75!! (Puck had one qualifying run in Novice FAST and a really good time.) (Pictured above is Beverly Morgan Lewis and her superstar, Fern.) Below: At our own LCKC Obedience Trials 6/30-7/1, both Puck (pictured left) and Fern finished their Novice Rally O titles. Puck took a First Place on Saturday (to big sister's last place). On Sunday, Fern took Third Place and Puck took Fourth. Congratulations to Beverly Morgan Lewis and Pembrats Fern and Puck!

-3- At our very own LCKC event last month, Cathy Wright's Parson Russell Terrier, Dandy, finished her Rally Novice title. Dandy is now officially known as Riverwood's Ain't She a Dandy JE RN TT. Congratulations to Cathy and Dandy! Dandy was found to have some additional talent as well. Cathy reports that, after being shown how to climb up and encouraged to slide down the tunnel slide at the school playground, Dandy enjoyed it so much that she started doing it herself...over, and over, and over, and over... She was then joined by Cathy's other dog, Dolly. Quite the playful and ingenious little pair. NEW VETERINARY EMERGENCY CLINIC IN EUREKA!!! Patricia Garrison, DVM PhD has opened an emergency veterinary facility. Dr. Garrison moved to Humboldt County at the age of 3. She is a graduate of McKinleyville High School and completed her undergraduate studies at Humboldt State University. Dr. Garrison received her DVM from University of California - Davis and also has a background in molecular biology and toxicology. The new emergency facility is located adjacent on the south side of the new Eureka Natural Foods store complex. Presently, it will be open from 4:00 p.m. Friday through 8:00 a.m. Monday morning with hopes of expanded hours in the future. Humboldt Veterinary Emergency Care 1460 Broadway Eureka 707-445-5882 Stop in to meet Dr. Garrison, and mention that you are a member of the Lost Coast Kennel Club. We hope to have Dr. Garrison speak at one of our meetings in the near future.

-4- HANDLING 4 (Conclusion of the series of handling articles by Michelle Santana) 1) BREATH, TAKE YOUR TIME. Go thru this check list, EVERY time. 2) Collect the Lead in your hand. (Reply to the judge's command. Yes sir/ma am) Make sure the skin of neck is tucked in nicely, check lips/drooling.* Once you come back to the Judge "all is there to see". You want the picture to have "clean lines". Act Poised: YOUR carriage is Important. Have a friend videotape you moving in practice so you "see" yourself & your dog. You should be like dancers. 3) Do a courtesy turn so you can get your dog into a smooth, rhythmic trot.* Having your dog do this turn in a pace or walk is not useful. 4) ALWAYS look down the ring to FIXATE on an object to move towards. A STRAIGHT line is Pertinent, practice this. 5) When you get to the end of the ring make your turn to come back. LOOK UP so you can see if you are in alignment with the judge. Make adjustments if necessary. Look judge in the eye, as if to say your dog is the soundest dog in the ring (& to see if he/she is distracted or watching). IMPORTANT: You should already have a "Game Plan" (possibly from watching an experienced handler in the ring before you) in your mind as to where exactly you are going to make your turns and, upon returning to the judge, where you are going to stop & free bait (& are you going to show a front on view of your dog, or side view?). You want to leave plenty of room so you are not crowding the judge while free baiting your dog. By Michelle Santana Reprinted with permission. *Editor's Note: If appropriate for your particular breed or dog. (Ms. Santana is a respected Doberman exhibitor/breeder.)

-5- PLANNED PARENTHOOD... Jeannie Breslin (Moonshadow Bedlingtons) announces the arrival of 6 darling puppies - 2 boys and 4 girls - whelped June 28, all of which are blue in color. Jeannie invites you to contact her (707-443- 8822) if you would like to visit the puppies or are interested in learning more about this unique breed.

-6- Lost Coast Kennel Club of California is sponsoring a (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) C.E.R.F. CLINIC with Dr. Rebecca Burwell, DVM, Diplomate American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists WHEN: Morning of Saturday, September 8th - BY APPOINTMENT ONLY! - LOCATION: Myrtle Avenue Veterinary Hospital 2715 Hubbard Lane, Eureka COST: $35 Per Dog* Eye examinations will be available ONLY if you have pre-registered and made an appointment through Dr. Burwell's office. THERE WILL NOT BE ANY SIGN-UPS ACCEPTED THE DAY OF THE CLINIC! To sign up and obtain an appointment time, contact: "JAN" at Northern California Eye Care for Animals 707-571-8442* *When you call, have your credit card ready, and tell Jan that you want to sign up for the C.E.R.F. clinic being sponsored by the Lost Coast Kennel Club on September 8th. You may elect to pay by credit card at time of sign-up, or you may elect to provide your credit card information but pay by check or cash at the clinic. If you elect to pay by check or cash and do not honor your appointment, however, your credit card will be charged. DAY OF CLINIC YOU WILL NEED: (1) Your dog's AKC registration slip; and (2) Permanent id information, such as tattoo #, microchip #, or DNA profile. (Dogs without permanent id can still be examined and registered with CERF but will be issued a number with an "N" suffix to indicate no permanent id. This can be changed if the dog receives a permanent id in the future.) Questions? Contact Barbara Stelz This clinic has been made possible by the generosity of Myrtle Avenue Veterinary Hospital by allowing Lost Coast Kennel Club the use of their facility.

-7- CERF Certification for Hybrid Dogs After volunteering to help with the CERF clinic to be sponsored by LCKC, I decided to visit the CERF website (www.vmdb.org/cerf.html). I was surprised to find that they are now including as eligible for certification more than 200 types of hybrid dogs. My initial reaction was that the well-respected CERF, by recognizing these hybrids, was bestowing a degree of legitimacy to the recent trend of "designer" dogs. While I found many, if not most, of the designer breed names quite amusing to read, I also found myself concerned. Then again, reducing the incidence of heritable eye disease in ANY type of dog is a good thing. What is your reaction to the hybrids now eligible to be registered with CERF? Let me know, and I'll publish your comments. A sampling... Unfinished Business: Legislative liaison Board to recommend Jeannie Breslin to write a letter as our club to Pet Pac stating our opposition to Bill AB 1634. Club supports Jeannie Breslin meeting with Patty Berg as Ms Berg will probably stay in politics and it would be good for her to hear the club s stand on dog issues. Yahoo Group The consensus is that this is working out fine. No complaints. New Business: Email list Members are reminded not to give out the other club member s email address without their permission. Michelle Dostal will email the member who voiced their concern on this issue. If you are receiving these unwanted emails, please reply to one of them and asked to be removed from their list. Jeannie Breslin volunteered to write a letter and put it on the Yahoo Group for everyone to comment and work on. This was voted on. MSAC Brief Show recap Everyone worked hard and had fun. It was a success! Chris Irvin talked to top handler Bill Shelton who sits on a committee that recommends the ten best show sites in America. He said, not this year, but definitely next year, we will be on that list. Lots of positive comments were received from exhibitors. Report of Secretary: Several Thank-You letters from judges were read. A letter from a new dog related service was read. Poo-Away, 725-8760. They will clean your yard for a minimal weekly fee. Pet Pac requested a donation. Since they lobby for dog owner rights on all issues, a motion was made to donate $50. MSAC Jill Otto will send the donation. Report of Treasurer: Patty Mendes absent. Debbie Hopkins did a wonderful; job of getting the word out about the trial. We have 32 RV reservations. Web Site: Jim Wasetis reported over 500 visits in June and 400 in July up to the meeting date. He will put a link to PetPac on the site. New Member Applications: Welcome Pamlyn Millsap, Josephine Morrissey, J. Steven and Kelly Porter, and Tiffany and Mark Schmitcke.,All were voted in. Trophy Chair: Shalisa Neely committed to being the 2008 Trophy Chair. Thank you Shalisa! CERF Clinic: No one stepped forward to oversee the CERF Clinic. It was suggested to have it at the Pet Fair in Sept.

-9- Minutes continued... New Business: Legislative Liaison: Jeannie Breslin will meet with Assemblyperson Patty Berg to let her know the club s stance on Breed legislation. Anyone is welcome to join her. Baird Smith talked about a good web site, www.nokilladvocacycenter.org. He handed out some copies from this site. Humdog: It was voted on to give $100 donation to Humdog for their raffle at the CPE agility trial. MSAC. Jill Otto will deliver the check to them. Board member needed: Deb Enns needs to resign from the board after the August meeting due to a conflict on meeting days. Chris Irvin volunteered to take her place. Thank you Chris!
