Wood Talking Breeding with Roger Clark VICTORIA THIS week s review of litters from the Victorian Litter Registrations list for the week ending November 30, starts with a nice litter of six pups by leading Victorian metropolitan sire Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x Princess Bale). Registered by Corio breeder, Anita Courts, the litter of - 6 - five dogs and one bitch are from the well bred, unraced bitch, Sheza Siren (May 2010 Bombastic Shiraz x Tricky Shelley), whose dam is by Spiral Nikita* x Paua To Burn (Awesome Assassin x Alice Dooley). She is from a litter of six named, which included Bank Roller, Country Persona, Irishrush, Sapporo and Tricky Kiwi. Their dam Tricky Shelley also produced winners from her three other litters, whelped in March 2013 by Brett Lee, March 2013 by Go Wild Teddy and April 2014 by Big Daddy Cool. Litter of three for Rose NEXT we have a litter of three pups by Melbourne Cup winner, Black Magic Opal (May 2011 Magic Sprite x Awesome Opal), the first of four litters on this week s list with three pups, which has brought down the week s litter average to 4.5 pups, which is well below average. The two dogs and one bitch, registered by Maffra breeder, Dawn Johnston, for the Beam Us Up syndicate, are from the beautifully bred bitch, Zelemar Rose (March 2013 Dyna Lachlan x Duchess Of Yap), whose dam is by Droopys Maldini x Leprechaun Pace (Brett Lee x Leprechaun Yap). She is from a litter which included Zelemar Leap, Zelemar Storm and Zelemar Zippa, with their dam also producing winners from her two other litters, whelped in June 2011 by El Grand Senor and March 2014 by Made To Size. On the track, Zelamar Rose raced 31 times, for three wins and six placings, winning twice over 520 metres at Sale (30.00) and also over 525 metres at Traralgon (31.02). Cosmic litter LEGIN Syndicate manager, Nigel Hebart registered our next litter for review, the second with three pups, by the under-rated sire, Cosmic Chief (January 2008 Brett Lee x Cosmic Goddess). The two dogs and one bitch are from the very well bred bitch, Oriental Lilly (December 2009 Premier Fantasy* x Dragon Angel), whose dam is by Elite State x Oriental Angel (Knockabout Wok x Anniston) and worth recalling, Anniston is by Fortified Speed* x Goddess Of Fire (Light Of Fire x Tranquil Flame). She was the only pup named in her litter, with her dam producing winners from her four other litters, by Collision, Dyna Tron, El Grand Senor and Paddy Whacker*. Oriental Lilly raced ten times, for three wins and six placings, winning twice over 390 metres at Shepparton (22.29) and also over 410 metres at Horsham (23.73). She is a proven brood bitch from her first two litters, by Collision and Turanza Bale.

TALKING BREEDING Continued Three for Manny* ANOTHER litter of three pups, this time by the highly rated US sire, Kiowa Mon Manny* (September 2002 Flying Penske x Flying Monica K). The one dog and two bitches, registered by Nagambi breeder, Sharon Wells, are from the well bred bitch, Bottle Of Wine (June 2011 Cosmic Rumble x Rotkara Milly), whose dam is by Bond x Leannans Way (Hotshot x Ruling Ways). She is from a litter of nine named, which included Gitcha Crazy, Gotta Watch Out, Knock On Wood, Make A Cuppa, Need To Know, Outside The Flag, Pass Of Time and Twenty Thirteen. Their dam also has winners on file from her six other named offspring, from three litters, whelped in April 2012 by El Grand Senor, January 2014 by Cosmic Rumble and one named from a September 2014 by Fabregas. On the track, Bottle Of Wine raced 34 times for six wins and nine placings, winning four times over 390 metres at Shepparton (22.54) and also over 311 metres at Temora (18.37) and 320 metres at Wagga (18.61). Magic litter COBAINS breeder, Michael Delaney has a nice litter of nine pups on the list this week, by leading NSW sire Magic Sprite (March 2008 Brett Lee x Glamorous). On the track, Somerton Ace only raced three times for one win, over 440 metres at Sale (25.24) winning first up by 6.8 lengths. She was then injured at her second start in October 2013 and had one more start in June 2014 over 390 metres at Shepparton but was injured again and retired. Certainly plenty to like about the pedigree of these well bred youngsters though Michael, and they should generate plenty of interest. Marcus Joe litter OUR final litter for review from this week s Victorian list is the last of the litters of three, this time by 2013 Group 1 Maturity Stake winner, Marcus Joe (April 2011 Velocette x Mojo Glory). The one dog and two bitches, registered by Point Lonsdale breeder, Neil Bell, from the very well bred bitch, Mach Ten (November 2007 Digital* x Affluence), whose dam is by Brett Lee x Light Sentence (Light Of Fire x Affidavit). She is from a litter of three named, which included Emmy s Girl and Tagman, with their dam having ten other named offspring on file, from four litters, by Elite State, Mustang Zapper and two by Surf Lorian. On the track she raced 20 times for two wins and seven placings, winning twice over 457 metres at Geelong. She has winners on file from her first two litters, whelped in January 2011 by Bombastic Shiraz, then March 2014 by Magic Sprite. The eight dogs and one bitch are from the well bred bitch, Somerton Ace (November 2011 Premier Fantasy* x Somerton Lass), whose dam is by Token Prince x Rap World (World Title x Rapunzel). She is from her dam s second Premier Fantasy* litter, of two named, which included Captain Peter. WATER TO BE PROVIDED DURING RACE DAY KENNELLING GRNSW Welfare News Greyhounds will have to be provided with water during race day kennelling as part of a new Race Day Hydration and Hot Weather Policy. Under the changes, clubs are responsible for providing a sealed bottle of water that is to be used by a greyhound during kennelling. The quantity of water provided by the club will need to be between 250ml and 500ml. In addition, trainers and handlers are responsible for providing a water bowl. The water bowl supplied by the trainer or handler must be of a size that ensures it can fit on the kennel door. The new Race Day Hydration and Hot Weather Policy has been introduced to improve the welfare of greyhounds competing at race meetings. GRNSW has developed this policy to assist industry participants to ensure that greyhounds are properly cared for, especially in hot weather conditions. Greyhounds not allowed access to water during kennel confinement suffer from dehydration which is a serious health and welfare concern. Dehydration is also a risk factor associated with hyperthermia, muscle cramping and acidosis (rhabdomyolysis). The new policy will commence on 2 December 2016 with a trial at The Gardens. Trainer involvement during the trial will be on a voluntary basis only. Greyhounds that participate in the trial will be permitted to wear American muzzles. After the trial, GRNSW will review the practices and consider any alterations where appropriate. Following this, the policy will commence at both TAB and Non- TAB tracks across NSW. Under the conditions of the Race Day Hydration and Hot Weather Policy, greyhounds will have to be provided with water during race day kennelling all year round (including in the cooler months of the year). The new Race Day Hydration and Hot Weather Policy replaces the Post Race Rehydration and Water Bowls in Kennels Policy. To assist participants with the changes a fact sheet has been developed by GRNSW, which will be distributed to all tracks and is also available by clicking here. Each club and their raceday staff will also be provided with training on the requirements under the policy and how it is to be implemented. GREYHOUND OF THE WEEK This week s Greyhound of the week is: Up Hill Jill Pic Paul Munt 2016 Group 2 Sandown Laurels winner, Up Hill Jill (February 2015 Premier Fantasy* x Where s Demonica) is this week s Greyhound Of The Week. Up Hill Jill is from a litter which included Mayfair Miss, Miss Emmy Rose, Miss Morrisset, Miss Torrez, Newcastle Ranger, Predemonic and Striker Shearer. Owned by Rose Geall and trained at Lara by David Geall, Up Hill Jill has now raced 14 times for seven wins and five placings, with prizemoney of $81,915 in the bank. She has won three times over 460 metres at Warragul (25.88), twice over 515 metres at Sandown (29.53) and also over 460 metres at Geelong (25.99) and 450 metres at Shepparton (25.23). Up Hill Jill Conquers Laurels Mountain Jason Adams Up Hill Jill ($4.10) delivered her connections their biggest thrill in greyhound racing when she took out last night s $72,500 Group 2 Laurels final. Up Hill Jill speared out of the inside alley as fancied runners Fanta Bale and Striker Light found trouble. Up Hill Jill led clearly down the back straight and was unchallenged in the run to the line, defeating Fearless Swan ($6.50) by eight lengths in 29.55. There was no hiding of emotions from trainer David Geall post-race. I m over the moon. The Laurels is a very prestigious race with a lot of history, said Geall. We were quietly confident after she drew box 1. She s got great early pace and the box was going to give her every chance to win. In saying that you must have great respect for the rest of the field, there were some top-quality greyhounds in the race. The win hit close to home as Up Hill Jill is owned by Geall s wife, Rose, and bred by the family. To have bred and brought her up ourselves makes it very special. For breeders, this is the one of the most sought after races out of all the big races the Laurels is in the top echelon. It s special because as breeders we spend a lot of time with the dogs we whelp and care for them throughout their whole career. It s a race we all want to win it s synonymous with breeding. The Laurels is not Geall s first success at group level however regards the win as one of his biggest achievements. We ve been fortunate to have won Group races before but to win a race like this at Sandown, being the venue it is and the history behind it, it s sensational. Back in October Up Hill Jill was an impressive winner of the Match Maker final at Shepparton, two runs later she was a gallant 2nd to future star Hit The Highway. Following advice from good friends, Up Hill Jill s Laurels preparation began. Good friends of ours (Angela Langton and Jeff Britton) have a greyhound (Hit The Highway) that ran her down and he is a super dog they thought her run was great and recommended we give her a go at the Laurels. Geall took up training greyhounds full-time 9 years ago, and was extremely thankful for those who have helped him along the way. My wife works full-time though still finds time to help with the dogs, my brother Jeff always gives me a hand and Mick Vaughan takes control whenever I go away. Angela Langton and the Britton s have also been a huge help. I ve got a good team around me. The Laurels Classic was restricted to female greyhounds only, born on or after 01/06/2014 Up Hill Jill is raced, trained and was bred by David & Rose Geall at Lara in Victoria, she is a Black bitch whelped February 2015 by Premier Fantasy from Where s Demonica (Where s Pedro x Demonica). Up Hill Jill has won seven and been placed five times from her 14 starts and with the $50,000 first prize for the Laurels it took her current stake earnings to $65,670. Sale Cup Preview GROUP 1 SALE CUP PREVIEW GRV Website Dundee Osprey Favourite for 2016 Sale Cup It will be standing room only at the Sale greyhounds on Boxing Day evening with local greyhound Zipping Kane certain to line up as the crowd favourite in the $108,000 Group 1 TRFM Sale Cup (650m). Trained just 30km from the Sale Greyhound Racing Club by Carolyn Jones in Rosedale, Zipping Kane was one of six heat winners on Sunday night, securing his shot at the $75,000 first prize in what is the first leg of greyhound racing s brand new Gippsland Carnival. A viral infection followed by a string of minor injuries saw Zipping Kane undertake an interrupted preparation heading into the Sale Cup. In fact, Sunday s heat win was just his second start in the past six months, which made his performance all the more impressive. He is just an unbelievably determined chaser, Carolyn Jones said after the win. He really had no right to win his (Sale Cup) heat considering he has had such an interrupted preparation, so it was a huge effort from him. While Carolyn couldn t be prouder of Zipping Kane, she was left in no doubt as to which greyhound is the one to beat in the Sale Cup. Dundee Osprey was a very impressive heat winner. He is a very good greyhound who has won some big races including the Topgun, so I think he is entitled to be favourite. Zipping Kane should improve in the final but it is a really tough field and he will need a lot of luck, she said. Incidentally six of the eight Sale Cup finalists are trained in or near the Gippsland region, with Crichton Bale and Brolly Bale being the exceptions. The last time a greyhound trained in the Gippsland region won the Sale Cup was in 2009 when Mantra Lad, prepared by Graeme Jose at Catani, saluted. Meanwhile, a star-studded field will contest the Gippsland Carnival Sprint Launch (440m) on Boxing Day evening at Sale including Aston Bolero, Jesaulenko and Pantera Nera. -16-

REMOTE CONTROL COURSING LURE TRAX 4WD modified, Soft fat tyres, sound attracter, toy tow bar, 100kph This car is not a small cheapie, the car is TRAX 4WD Truck, however Graham Moscow from Greyhound Gear calls it car. The car must be safe and big enough so pups can't drag off to the dam. Theory is to course pups three to six months in a pack, a maximum of four to five times. Elite State lodge have coursed five litters this year and found this method works 100% Pups that chased in pack were all easy break ins. Wheeler kennels purchased a car and Brendan Wheeler said he was very happy with it. Longwood trainer Michael Barry has just ordered a car and Greyhound Gear are currently modifying it for him. Graham has a video of pups chasing the car, which he will email the link to, if you contact him. I have had a look at the video and it won t take long to convince you what a fantastic product this is, and just how keenly the pups chase after it. Looks certain to be a valuable tool for breeders to educate their young pups with, and from the look of it, it will make the breakers job much easier when the pups go to him, or if you are breaking your own pups in. Why not give Graham a call and have a chat with him about this amazing product. He can then answer any of your question, discuss pricing options, delivery time etc. Graham Moscow - 0412 243 655 Special Report www.greyhoundgear.com.au - 17 -
