She is well respected for her holistic Relationship Centred Training approach to dogs and the people that love them. She teaches internationally for a broad range of groups ranging from guide dog schools to university conferences and dog training groups. Join us for an exciting event of thought provoking work with a variety of dogs. Suzanne's sense of humour and compassionate approach plus her keen observation skills make for a memorable and educational experience. Thursday & Friday, 8-9 th March 2018 CARAT 1.1 What Is CARAT? Developed by Suzanne Clothier in 2007, CARAT (Clothier Animal Response Assessment Tool) is a novel assessment system that categorizes behavior traits in multiple components that are intuitive and practical. CARAT takes a detailed view of the individual dog as a unique combination of many factors working together to influence, exacerbate, mitigate and enhance each other. In the profile created by the nuances and specifics of this complex interaction of multiple traits, an accurate picture is created of the individual, regardless of breed or age. CARAT is unique in its recognition that a response to any given stimulus can either inhibit or activate the animal, attract the animal or create avoidant behavior, and that the distinction between the two is critical in understanding the individual. For example, a dog who reacts quickly and avoidantly to a sudden noise is demonstrating a different response than a dog who reacts quickly and moves towards the same noise. At all times, behavior is assessed according to how productive, functional, or adaptive it may be, with a full understanding that what may be productive, functional or adaptive in one context may not be in another context. For example, there would be great differences in the CARAT profiles for a successful guide dog, competitive agility and a suitable companion for an elderly person with mobility issues. WHO NEEDS CARAT? CARAT is a must-have tool for any serious animal professional who is involved in assessing behavior. Whether you are a trainer, a behaviorist, a breeder, a veterinarian, in rescue/shelter work, or involved in service dog organizations, CARAT can open a new world of observation and understanding. CARAT will fine tune your assessments, your behavior modification & training plans, improve your selection of suitable dogs for a given task, sharpen your breeding program's focus on desired traits, and help find the best possible job/task/home for an individual dog. This is CARAT Level I-Intro training, which includes development of observation skills, basic Level I CARAT concepts, video, and group exercises. Find out why CARAT changes everything! See dogs with new eyes and understanding.

Saturday 10th March 2018 IF/THEN: SOLUTIONS IN DOG TRAINING This is an exciting new approach from Suzanne Clothier, designed to help trainers at any skill level. IF/THEN was created to guide trainers through the complex decision making process involved in approaching the dog comprehensively. IF/THEN may be used with any training methodology or over-arching philosophy, whether the goal is a pleasant companion to high level working or performance goals. IF/THEN uses a series of flow charts and assessments to help trainers to identify the specifics of any individual dog, situation or training/behavior issue, and guide selection of the appropriate choices for building, improving & strengthening behaviour. This is a dynamic approach that works with what I call the ethology of the individual(tm) as it is highly responsive to the specific dog, handler and/or situation. IF/THEN organizes your thinking, helping you see where the real underlying issues may be, and how they work in combination to create your dog, your training situation, your challenges. And of course, IF/THEN helps point the way to the solutions you need. Whether you re experienced or new to training, you will find IF/THEN to be one of the most powerful tools in your dog training toolbox.

Sunday 11 th March CONFUSED TO CONNECTED It seems a simple goal: an enjoyable, mutually rewarding relationship with dogs. But like the proverbial brass ring, this kind of dog/human relationship can seem out of reach. No matter how many training books you read, no matter how many classes you attend, no matter which equipment and techniques you try, you find yourself still confused, even frustrated with a dog. In a forest of information, it s hard to find the path that will lead to better relationships This new workshop presented by Suzanne Clothier offers practical tools for finding the appropriate path to better dog/human relationships. As always, Suzanne's work focuses on keeping the relationship central, respecting the individual dog and human, and aiming for a mutually satisfying connection. Suzanne will be using selected case history dogs (and their handlers!) to help attendees learn how to assess behaviour, training & performance issues. While these are complex challenges to unravel, Suzanne's approach is based in simple Decision Points to guide choices for each dog and handler. Emphasis will be placed on: Observation skills - really seeing the dog and handler in detailed ways opens a world of understanding The geometry of body language - simple shape recognition deciphers critical metamessages The Elemental Questions - questions and answers that reveal the dog as an individual The Think & Learn Zone - why arousal matters, why Goldilocks was right, and what to do about sticky dogs Yes/No/Maybe So? - Using Decision Points and flow charts Transitions & Thresholds - Tipping points and finding the balance Volitional Behaviour & Postures - what your dog can tell you about his internal state Which path is the right one for you and your dog? It can be confusing, trying to sort out the many possible techniques and methods. Suzanne's approach to assessing the challenges leads logically to which practical RCT techniques can be combined for effective, humane and satisfying results. Whether you are working with an advanced performance dog, a newly adopted pet or helping with clients dogs, this seminar offers a wealth of information, practical tools & techniques to help handlers & dogs find their way to better relationships.

Monday 12 th March CONNECTION, COOPERATION & CONTROL Suzanne Clothier often says, "if you're hanging onto your dog's body, it's because you've lost his mind! If we want connection, we have to be connected. If we want our dogs available to us and aware of us, we have to be available to the dog and aware of him. Is your dog s behaviour great at home, but he s a punk in the park? Do you wish your dog would listen, even in distracting situations? Spent a lot on training classes, but still have an out of control dog? The Connection, Cooperation & Control (CCC) training system can help you create the kind of connection and cooperation you want with your dog. Created by Suzanne Clothier and Cindy Knowlton, CCC is being introduced to handlers and trainers eager for something that is not just new, but humane, effective and fun! Firmly founded on the principles of Suzanne Clothier s Relationship Centred Training, CCC helps you create mutual connection with your dog, while you also develop cheerful cooperation. Dog training generally focuses on teaching dogs specific behaviours, but forgets to include the relationship, communication and connection. Without those key ingredients, you end up with a dog who knows stuff like SIT, DOWN, STAY but still drags you here and there, tuning you out, and sometimes just disconnecting. Sound familiar? Distraction is a common problem for pet owners and professional dog trainers. The CCC training system bridges the gap between training at home and in public places to keep the dog engaged and cooperative while the rest of the world happens around him. CCC helps handlers and dogs learn to balance their awareness, and to split their attention. At every step, connection, cooperation and control work together to create a new kind of relationship between you and your dog deeper, stronger and more satisfying. Come learn more about this wonderful new system and enjoy teaching your dog some of the CCC skills & techniques! ************************ Tuesday 13 th Wednesday 14 th March 2018 CARAT 1.3 Pre-requisite of completion of CARAT 1.2 Building on levels 1 & 2 information and skills. Open only to those enrolled in the CARAT Certification program.
