1 of 6 11/17/2016 7:45 PM BLUE EARTH NICOLLET COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY March 2016 Eat, Move, Sleep In celebration of their 100th anniversary, Mankato Clinic recently introduced a healthy living initiative called Thrive: Eat, Move, Sleep, based on the book Eat, Move, Sleep by Tom Rath. Rath wrote his book because he was tired of seeing people suffer and die early because of poor health decisions. Although Rath is talking about people, many pets in the U.S. are unhealthy because they are overweight and don t get enough exercise. Eat It is estimated that over half of the dogs and cats in the United States are overweight. An overweight dog or cat is much more likely to suffer from medical problems like diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, lung disorders, and even cancerous tumors. Dogs and cats that maintain their ideal body weight live longer and healthier lives. Just like people, they need to eat less and exercise more to lose weight. One of the most important decisions pet owners make each day is how and what they choose to feed their pets. Move Exercise is so important in keeping dogs and cats healthy and happy. Although we usually think of the daily walk as the best way to exercise our dogs, there are other really cool ways to give your dog some exercise, especially in the winter. If you have stairs in your house, stand at the top of the stairs and throw a toy over and over again and tire him out. Dogs love chasing a laser back and forth and get a workout in the process. Another fun idea is to hide your dog s treats around the house and watch him have fun looking for them. Dog dispensing treats are another great way to keep your dog busy. 2 of 6 11/17/2016 7:45 PM Cats love to chase lasers and wand toys with feathers at the end. A cardboard box with a ball in it will keep your cat busy for hours. Sleep If it seems like your dog sleeps a lot, you are right. Most adult dogs sleep 12-14 hours a day and puppies sleep 18 hours a day or more. They often curl up when they sleep for warmth and security and often twitch in their sleep because they are dreaming. My three setters circle three times before lying down and sometimes paw like they are making a nest. Cats sleep an average of 15 hours a day and some can sleep 20 hours. They are most active during dusk and dawn and love to investigate while you are sleeping! Sending them home is a joy that is a challenge to explain. And yet the transition can be a bit scary and strenuous for some of our furry friends. To assist them in the transition we have begun something new. We send our adoptables home with a little love from BENCHS in the form of a blanket that they have been resting on that is infused with their scent. The time they spent at the shelter is a safe and positive experience and there is some comfort in the familiar blanket and their scent arriving at their new home. It is a small grounding space to reassure them. Our goal for 2016 is to rescue 1000 animals; that will be a lot of blankets. The fact is we are blessed by strong support from our members. We have a lot of blankets arriving weekly, we have a good supply stored now. Plus, we know our supporters will shower us with more because this new idea is so wonderful. Waiting for a Home To learn more about our adoptable cats and dogs and more, visit Petfinder. We are so grateful for the much needed supplies! Sending them home with a bit of reassurance feels like a little love sent along. Easter Hazards

3 of 6 11/17/2016 7:45 PM Although there is nothing better than an Easter basket filled with Cadbury Cream eggs, and nothing more beautiful than a fresh Easter lily, there are just two common Easter items that are toxic to dogs and cats. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine and both are poisonous to dogs and cats. Eating even two or three leaves of an Easter lily can cause liver failure in cats and if left untreated can be fatal. Although the decorative green grass that we use to fill Easter baskets is not toxic, dogs love to eat it and too much can cause an obstruction and an expensive visit to the vet. Easter is a wonderful holiday, but remember that your pets will be curious of these new items in the house. Keep them away from your pets reach and enjoy the holiday! 4 of 6 11/17/2016 7:45 PM Pins for Paws Bowling Event This year s annual Pins for Paws Bowling Event was a great success. Pins for Paws was started by Mary Weller and Jerry Wegman 7 years ago and they continue to chair the event and recruit teams every year. On Sunday, March 8, 13 teams competed at the Wow Zone and raised over $6000 for BENCHS. First place went to the K-9 team, second place went to Tailwinds, and third place went to the Alley Cats. BENCHS would like to thank the Wow Zone for their great hosting this annual event and providing lunch and great service. The Team Spirit Award was a tie between "Lint Rollers" and "Doug's Divas". Foster Homes We are actively seeking foster homes for pregnant cats and their kittens Volunteer Spotlight Mary Gaskins - Foster Mom Every spring, shelters across the country are overloaded with pregnant cats and kittens. Kitten season is really three seasons in one, starting in spring, peaking in late spring or early summer, and ending in fall. We seek fosters for all mamas so they can have their babies away from the shelter, in a calmer environment where socialization can begin early. We are actively seeking fosters right now! For almost 20 years, Mary Gaskins has fostered pregnant cats and kittens for BENCHS. As you can imagine, she has some Cleaners Yard Work, Snow Removal Check "Groundskeeping/Gardening" on the volunteer interest form Donate Become a Member of BENCHS Membership - $35 individual/family

5 of 6 11/17/2016 7:45 PM amazing stories about her experiences. She recalls the time she fostered a buff colored pregnant cat that just kept getting bigger and bigger and showed no interest in giving birth. She took the mama cat to the vet; an x-ray revealed she would give birth to 8 kittens within a day or two. Sure enough, the next day she had kittens, but only 7! Mary took her to the vet again and they did a caesarean and out came the 8th kitten! That lovely mama cat never had to have kittens again. She fondly recalls the time she introduced a tiny orphaned kitten to a mama cat with her own litter and how the mama sniffed the kitten all over, washed it head to toe, and made it her own. She named the kitten Lucky. The hardest thing for Mary is when she has to take the kittens back to the shelter after she has fallen in love with them, but she admits it is worth it when she sees the kittens with their new forever families. Thank you Mary for being such an awesome foster mom! Herbie is one of those cats that never stop purring and constantly wants to be loved. After getting permission from their landlord, Aly and Brent returned to the shelter and adopted Herbie. Herbie is now called Flynn and has not stopped purring since he went to his forever home! Roscoe Last August, Arynn and her boyfriend went to the shelter looking for a dog. Just as they were ready to leave, her boyfriend spotted a big fluffy dog. As soon as Roscoe bounded in the room, it was love at first sight. Roscoe had been at the shelter for months, so it took awhile for him to adjust, but it wasn t long before he was following Arynn everywhere. His coat is now poofy and beautiful and his He loves to go on walks, play, and especially cuddle. Roscoe s owners can t imagine life without him! 6 of 6 11/17/2016 7:45 PM dog. They went to BENCHS just to look, and met and fell in love with Mack. Mack is a very gentle and loving boy and great on the leash. He is really good with his four feline siblings and lets them set the boundaries. Their pack is now complete. Cheyenne Three years ago, Kristi and David adopted Cheyenne from BENCHS. At first, she was shy, wouldn t play with toys, and wanted to be alone. But it wasn t long before she wanted to play, snuggle in bed, and go everywhere with Kristi. Cheyenne is now a loving, well-adjusted dog who loves to play with her puppy brother Chip. She is Kristi s 60 lb lapdog!
