Expanding Families One Pet at a Time October 2016 Priceless TM Celebrating the Bond Between Humans and Animals

PawPrints Magazine's Homeless cover Model Photo by Belinda Prevatt October is a big month for me, because it s Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month! And who among us couldn t use a new best friend? I ll give you unconditional love and always be by your side. My name is Draylyn (A090338) and I m a 6-month-old Dutch Shepherd mix girl who is as sweet as it gets. I enjoy the company of others, both furry and human. I am always so eager to please and am the true definition of a top notch dog. My adoption fee includes a physical examination, heartworm test, Rabies vaccination and spay surgery. Come meet me at Brunswick County Sheriff s Animal Protective Services or call 910-754-8204. They ll be happy to tell you more about me. I d also like to thank Belinda Prevatt, Adoption Outreach Coordinator at the shelter, for taking my beautiful cover photo. Cover photographer Dick Parrott was unavailable this month so Belinda did the honors. She definitely captured my happy, friendly spirit. And for those reading this, won t you visit me? I m waiting to steal your heart and I m only a shelter away!

DOGTRAIN 395-4399 Instruction for People Training for Dogs Office Hours: 9-6pm Tues-Sat Classes: 9-9pm Tues-Thurs 9-6pm Fri-Sat 1038 S. Kerr Ave. Wilmington, NC PUPPY PRE-SCHOOL THROUGH COMPETITION OBEDIENCE Private Instruction Available Hi there, my name is Suitcase (aka Sweetie Case, Ms. Case)! I m a very playful, energetic, sweet Pit Bull mix pup (approximately 18-months-old) who was found July 26th in Onslow County. I am up to date on vaccinations, spayed and heartworm negative. My leg looked pretty awful when I was found, so after multiple x-rays, surgery was the course of action taken. I ve spent a lot of time in crates recovering and am now completely healed. I want to grab a toy and play every chance I get! I ve learned a few new things in my foster home, among them sit, down, touch, wait at doorways, walking on a loose leash and the cutest: to woo (talk) on cue. I would do great in a one-dog home. Each home considered. Please call and ask any questions at 281-620-9046. I am sponsored by Progressive Pet Training. Thank you! Super-friendly, affectionate and gorgeous! That s me, Sarah, in a nutshell. Come on over and see for yourself! You ll find me congregating happily with the other cats in the playroom because I love them, too. I ll even rub my chin on another cat s chin in a friendly greeting. I also have the most striking Tabby stripes! I m a 1-year-old girl who is very healthy - spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I enjoy meeting people and will come right over and start to purr. I d be such a fantastic companion for a single person or family! If you d like to meet me and you need driving directions, please call Pender Humane Society at 910-259-7022. They can also answer any questions you might have about me. Sponsored by Your Friends at Pender Humane Society s Furry Friend s Re-sale Shop. We care! 4 www.pawprintsmagazine.com October 2016

I am Dixie, a 9-year-old girl who is spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I am very people affectionate: one of my favorite pastimes is to sit in your lap to get brushed; another is doggie massages; and my most favorite is giving lots of kisses! I listen to commands, walk well on a leash and enjoy being with other dogs. Even though I love to chase a ball, I do enjoy my cuddle-time on the couch. If you d like to meet me, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340. Sponsored in loving memory of Roxy. URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! I M A SUPER-FRIENDLY girl named Samantha (A008566) and I m ready to make your life a joy! I get along great with other dogs and I am at ease and friendly around children. At just 3-years-old, I m already spayed and they tell me I m mixed with possibly Beagle/Lab and Plott Hound! Whatever I am, it all adds up to something completely adorable! I just LOVE treats and am so happy to be with people. I do have heartworms, so I m looking for an extrawonderful person to adopt me and get them treated. I will spend the rest of my life thanking you for it! Please hurry, though - dogs arrive every day and there s just not enough room for us all. The shelter is open 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, Noon to 4pm on Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays. For driving directions or more info, call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259-1484 or email jhorton@pendercountync.gov. I can t wait to see you! I am sponsored in loving memory of Hank Harrington. My name is Zen and I m approximately 2-years-old. They say I m a Catahoula mix weighing about 60 pounds. I tested heartworm positive and I have Lyme disease and I m currently undergoing treatment. I m a great dog, very playful and happy. I can be a little bossy with strange dogs (stranger danger as I call it) but I ve lived in a foster home with 4 other dogs and get along fine with all of them. I need dogs my own size to play with and if you adopt me, I come with 6- weeks of training at Petsmart. I walk nicely on a leash, love people, and the attention I get from people. I m neutered and all my vaccines are up to date. Please come see me every Saturday at Petsmart in Wilmington. I m worth getting to know. If you are interested in adopting or have any questions about me, please contact Columbus Humane Society at 910-499-1148. I am sponsored by Cindy Meyers in loving memory of Harley and Murphy.

Adoption Options We are all from different Animal Rescues. Please read our stories! NHC RABBIT RESCUE OF WILMINGTON Hi, my name is Thunder (RR61) and I was surrendered by my owner because she lost her job and the kids are allergic to bunnies. I came in with another rabbit but we were not a bonded pair. I m an energetic, 2-year-old Domestic Lop mix who likes to run and play and I m very active. I like attention and love to be petted. I ve already been neutered and weigh just 4.5 pounds. I'm litterbox-trained and will be the ideal cagefree, indoor family pet. If you want to adopt me, please email NHCRabbitRescue@gmail.com, call 910-686-9171 or visit us at www.nhcrabbitrescue.com. OPERATION TOPCAT My name is Rosie and I m a lovely marbled Tabby girl who just turned 1-year- old. I was rescued by Operation Topcat as a kitten and needed a lot of TLC at the time. I thrived in foster care and I m now ready for a great family in an indoor home. I m calm and easy-going. I tested negative for Feline Leukemia & FIV, I ve been vaccinated for Distemper and Rabies, and I m even spayed and microchipped. I don t mind other cats and I love to play with balls that have a bell in them. I have a ton of fun chasing them around. I will sit in your lap once I get to know you. Won't you give me a chance? To adopt me, email otopcatnc@aol.com or call 910-200-0612. FUREVER FRIENDS ANIMAL RESCUE I m Sampson, a 2½-year-old, 45 pound boy who is neutered. According to DNA testing, I m a Rat Terrier and St. Bernard mix. I am vaccinated, house-trained, know basic commands and have a microchip. I am enjoying living in a foster home (with two other dogs and a cat) where I get plenty of playtime, exercise and discipline. My foster mom says I am a perfect houseguest. I walk two miles a day with my foster mom and canine friends and am very well-behaved. I love being with humans, playing with other dogs and cats. A home with other nonaggressive dogs would be best for me. Call 910-617-3760 or email slsfureverfriends@gmail.com to adopt me. ANIMAL AVENGERS My name is Eli and I m a 6-year-old Rottweiler mix with long hair. I m house-trained, neutered, heartworm negative and up to date on shots. I m 125 pounds of love and I m ready to find my forever home. I have a pleasant nature and loveable personality. If you would like to meet me in person, applications can be submitted via our website at www.animalavengersnc.org or come visit me at one of our adoption events. PAWSITIVE PARTNERS PRISON PROGRAM I was one happy dog when this photo was taken! Now, not so much. I was returned by my adopted family, not because I was a bad dog, but because they started traveling for work and knew I was getting lonesome being alone so much. My name is Copper and I m a 2-year-old Lab/Hound mix boy. I come with my own crate, toys and training DVD. I ve graduated from 8-weeks of obedience training with the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program and am very well-mannered. Could you please give me a chance? Call 910-297-1338 or adopt@montyshome.org to set up a meeting with me. You can fill out an application at www.montyshome.org. 8 www.pawprintsmagazine.com October 2016

Adoption Options We are all from different Animal Rescues. Please read our stories! CAROLINA ANIMAL PROTECTION SOCIETY Hi, my name is Katida. I am a beautiful, spayed Siamese girl who is 3-years-old. I was left behind near a nursing home. I was so scared and hungry. I still had some nail caps attached to toes which made it impossible to find food. I was beaten up by a few cats and I am now FIV positive. I am non-aggressive and enjoy the company of other cats. I love attention and I m a purring machine. I would love a forever home with lots of love. I'm very healthy. If you have questions concerning me or FIV, please contact Debbie at 910-330-1376. COASTAL ANIMAL RESCUE EFFORT (C.A.R.E.) It s me, Binky! I made my cover model debut on the March issue of PawPrints Magazine and am so surprised that I am still waiting for a loving home! Also you can search for us on Facebook or visit www.stffar.wix.com/stfureverfreedom. COASTAL CANINE RESCUE My name is Nova and I m a 2-year-old Pit Bull mix who weighs 45 pounds. I had run out of time at a shelter, due to overcrowding, so CCR stepped in to save me! I am very friendly and love my foster brother. I m energetic and love to play. I ve been working on manners and leash walking but I m very smart and learn very quickly! I m very loving and have a great disposition. I m a fun, spunky little girl who will be a great family companion. I m up to date on shots, I ve been spayed, dewormed, tested negative for heartworms and on monthly heartworm prevention. My name is Tori and I m approximately 18-months-old. I m a Labrador Retriever mix who is extremely sweet and I seem to get along well with other animals - however, I have not been introduced to cats yet. I m playful and smart, and would make a great addition to a home that is active or has children. I m a little apprehensive with a leash, but I pick new things up quickly. I am currently being treated for heartworms but I am hoping to be cleared for adoption soon. I can be a little shy at first but I m gentle and ready to be someone's lap dog. Please call 910-256-2624 if you are interested in meeting me. My friends will also be happy to answer any questions you may have about me! I am sponsored by Atlantic Animal Hospital who supports Coastal Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.). If you are looking for a loving companion, I am your girl. My name is Georgia Peach and I am very low maintenance but will always be by your side looking for snuggles! I am super-loving with people, but would do best as an only pet. I have been homeless over a year. I came in with a litter of kittens last summer and when they all got adopted, I became an overlooked mama. It s super hard to compete with cute, fluffy, adorable kittens year after year. If you are looking to be a one pet household, please consider me. If you are interested in adopting or meeting me, call or text my Adopt-An-ANGEL foster mom, Sara, at 859-274-5028 or visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net. Please call 910-392-0557 to adopt us! Adopt-An-ANGEL My name is Shini and I am the cutest Tabby cat. I like to follow you around like a dog and I will greet you at the door when you come home. All I want is to be your best friend. I am a young female who just likes to go with the flow. I will do great with anyone and anything. You have dogs, cats or kids? No problem. I m spayed and current on vaccinations. Please come meet me at Petco on weekends. I wish I may, I wish I might, find myself a forever home tonight. My name is Birdie and I am a 9-year-old Chihuahua. I am an absolute sweetheart! I weigh about 8 to 10 pounds and I am super adorable. You may think I m a senior at 9-years of age but did you know that the smaller a dog is, the later in life they become seniors? I am really friendly and have never met a stranger. I do well with cats, dogs and older kids. I am also housetrained and easy-going. I am ready to pack my bags and move in. All you need is love...and a dog...and I hope you ll let me be that dog! Come see me at Petco on weekends. My name is Nibbler and I am a cute, plush, Tabby and white girl with pretty eyes. I love to chase balls and bat things around. I am pretty playful for a young adult. I seem to do well with cats, dogs and kids, too. Please come see me at Petco on weekends. Howdy! My name is Citrus and I am a female orange Tabby kitten who is about 10-weeks-old. I am as playful and fun as they come. Plus, did you see that I am a girl? Female orange Tabbies are super rare since 90 percent of the time we are boys. Would you adopt me because I am special, unique and rare? I have a super personality and have been raised completely indoors. I m spayed and current on vaccinations. Come see me and others like me every weekend at Petco. My name is Emma and I am a solid black female cat. I have already been spayed and I m current on vaccinations, too. I am young and only about 1-year-old. I had a litter of kittens and all of them have been adopted already - but I have been overlooked. Adult moms are the least likely animal to be adopted and when you add my black fur to that, you can see what a difficult time I m having finding love. People always seem to choose colorful cats over black ones. Every year, kittens get scooped up while moms who are just 6 to 8-months older get passed over all summer long. Is there anyone out there who can turn my luck around? You can find me at Petco on weekends. My name is Tipsy and I am so unique with my vibrant, green eyes. I am adorable and sweet, too. I am a pretty girl who will spark conversation when anyone comes over. I seem to do well with other animals and would be an easy addition into anyone's home. I m already spayed and vaccinated so I m ready to go today! You can come meet me at Petco on weekends. P.O. Please call 919-710-3872 to adopt us! All 4 Cats I'm a handsome black and white little guy named Enrico. I'm a little shy at first, but you will see I have my own special charm after we take some time to get to know each other. I am neutered, up to date on my vaccines and microchipped. Visit with me and my friends on weekends at Petsmart in Monkey Junction! We re there 10am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. I am Mufasa, a distinguished older gentleman. I've led a most interesting life so far and I m looking for a new companion with whom to share my memories and affection. I like other animals, both cats and dogs. I love to lounge in the sun and receive treats and head rubs... it is my due after all! In return, I shall endeavor to be your loyal friend and fellow traveler. I am neutered, up to date on my vaccines and microchipped. Call 919-710-3872 for info or to meet me at my foster home. I'm Allister and I m a wonderful boy kitten. I love to explore paper bags, boxes and other new places to play and hide. Come see me so we can make our game plan and start having fun together! I am neutered, I m up to date on my vaccinations and I m even microchipped. Please open your home to me. Hi, my name is Chuck! I wasn't dealt the very best hand, but I'm making the best of it. I was found as a stray in bad shape. I have chronic stomatitis and I am also FIV positive. I also have lots and lots of love to give, but not enough people to share it with. I get along extremely well with other animals and I'm generally a very passive, calm cat. I love to show my love with head butts, purrs, and licks. I am being fostered in Wilmington. If you're willing to give me a chance, please call 301-943-4029. I have been neutered and am up to date on my vaccines. Hello, I'm Gelato. I'm a delicious looking little guy with my very cool black and white coat. I will be your best buddy after we get to know each other. I am neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. Please call to visit with me. Hello there! I'm Natalie, an interesting and sweet lady cat. It's true, I have one blind eye. However, I don't let that get in my way. Just like a human with limited vision, I've adapted and do just fine. I can sniff out a treat, come for a pet and know just where to find that perfect spot in the sun for an afternoon snooze. I have been spayed, I m up to day on my vaccines and I m microchipped. Please call to visit with me in my foster home. Precious here. Once you take one look at me, all you can do is keep staring at my beautiful golden eyes. I may be a very beautiful Tabby with gorgeous eyes, but I am also a very sweet and loving cat who would love to find a home soon. I get along great with dogs, but I do prefer to be your only feline friend. I am spayed, up to date on my vaccines and am microchipped. I am Waldo and I am looking for a nice lap, a window seat or a toy mouse. If you have any one of those, I would be happy to meet you to discuss a permanent home at your place. I am already neutered, up to date on my vaccinations and microchipped. Please call for more information or to meet me at my foster home. My name is Thor and I lost my family and my brother because the landlord changed his mind about allowing pets. My mom was crying when she had to take me and my brother to the shelter, but they told her no also, and that they couldn t take us because there was a waiting list! There we all stood - my mom and her young son crying, holding onto two dogs and nowhere to go. It was a pitiful sight to behold! A kind man who had come to the shelter to adopt a dog took my brother. Another young mother who fosters for OCPAW took me, because her heart was just breaking watching the whole scene unfold. OCPAW is now helping me find a loving home. I m 1-year-old and such a good sweet boy. I m fully vetted, obedient, house-trained and I want to be with a family and love them. I'm about 35 pounds and I love kids, cats and other dogs. I m also crate-trained and ride well in the car. I promise to love you! Please call 484-883-3552 or email ocpaw@yahoo.com to adopt me. I was abandoned when I started showing signs of illness. I barely managed to survive with sporadic feeding by neighbors. Finally, someone rescued me. The vet discovered that I have severe hyperthyroidism and only weighed 5 pounds! I m a grand old girl, but I do not groom myself so I need daily brushing and a weekly bath. I also need medication twice daily for hyperthyroidism. There is also a cyst on my neck that has to be drained every 2 to 5 days. I m normally calm with other cats, but sometimes I get irritable and initiate a tussle. I do not like dogs or children and would do best in a quiet household. I m currently in a foster home and loving life. As it often happens with rescues in desperate condition, I m relishing the love, attention and the never ending buffet. Contact Debbie with Carolina Animal Protection Society at 910-330-1376 to be my guardian angel. I am sponsored in loving memory of Tom Grady.

My name is Ivy and I'm such a happy girl who is eager to learn new things. I'm finding out people are not so bad after all. I was a little unsure at first. I love when my foster family loves on me and plays with me. I am discovering so many new things that I never knew before. Toys are my new favorite things and I love to play fetch the wubba. I also love my crate and go in there with no problem. I even go in there to hang out sometimes when I don't have to. It's like my own little mini house. I go outside for all my bathroom breaks and have not had any accidents inside. My foster mom says that I catch on really quick because I have already learned sit and down in just a couple weeks of being here - but really I just want the treat she's going to give me after. I will do just about anything for a treat! She says that's a good thing because I still need to learn some leash manners. I thought I was supposed to pull her around but she says that's not the way it goes. For info on me or for a full explanation of our adoption process, application, and fees please email info@mpbf.org, visit www.meritpitbullfoundation.com, or call Merit Pit Bull Foundation at 336-618-PITT. Do you like redheads? Well, here I am! My name is Ludwig and I m a sweet young fella, orange in color, who was found by a good Samaritan after I was hit by a car. My broken leg is completely healed but I still have an eye defect from the accident. It doesn t stop me from playing and having lots of fun, though! I am very loving and friendly and I m ready to make your family complete! Please call my friends at 910-256-2624 or email care@aahpcr.com for more information or to submit an application for my adoption. I am sponsored by Atlantic Animal Hospital who supports Coastal Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.). Hello everyone! My name is Nini. I am a Lab/Australian Cattle Dog mix, weighing about 60 pounds. I lived in the same Carolina Beach home for about 8-years but my family had to give me up following a succession of big changes in their life. This had left me a little confused, but thanks to SOAR, I am feeling very upbeat now and looking forward to life with a new loving family. The volunteers have been helping me with my commands (I have stop and heel and shake down very well) and with my exercise habits. We have discovered that chasing a frisbee and doing laps in the exercise tunnel is a fun workout for me. Belly rubs are my favorite low impact activity. Cats don t seem to bother me but some dogs do if they get too rambunctious. Won t you call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and come meet me? I m simply a fantastic girl. I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the Rainbow Bridge. Please call 910-792-9014 to adopt us! CAT: Cat Adoption Team We re at Petsmart 7 days a week. VOLUNTEERS and FOSTER HOMES NEEDED!!! Call 910-792-9014 for more information. Hi, I m Merryweather! I m a 1-year-old white and brown Tabby girl. I was adopted as a kitten, but my owner couldn t keep me, so I m back with Cat Adoption Team and hoping to find a great forever home soon. I warm up to people very quickly and enjoy affection. Playing and purring are my favorite pastimes. I like playing with kittens sometimes, but I will probably do better as an only cat. Hey there, I'm Emanuel! I'm a white and brown Tabby boy and I m approximately 1-year-old. I'm a sweet, loving, and playful kitty who would be great for a family or any home with lots of action. I thrive on attention and started feeling unhappy being stuck in a cage, so I m staying with my foster mom for now. If you are interested in meeting me, call 910-599-2755! Hi, I'm Skye! I'm a 6-month-old gray male kitten. I'm a very sweet, loving kitty with a shy side. Once I warm up to you, though, I will jump in your lap to be petted. I love to snuggle and cuddle. I get along well with other cats. Three of my siblings are with me at the adoption center. (One of them, Lily, is also pictured on this page). We're all a sweet, lovely bunch, so please consider adopting me along with my brother or one of my sisters. Hey, I'm White Ears, a female kitten, and I have a brother named Brown Ears. Yes, as you may have guessed, my ears are white and his are brown. We are both 6-month-old white and brown Tabbies. We're somewhat shy, but we warm up once we feel safe and comfortable in a calm, quiet environment. We enjoy cuddling, being petted, and chasing toy mice. We're a great duo, so please consider adopting us together! Hey, I'm Lily! My brother is Skye and he s pictured at the bottom left corner. I'm just 6-months-old, and my fur is white with black spots. I am a really sweet girl and will meow when you call my name. I'm also entertained by watching television, so I hope you have good taste in movies. I get along well with other cats, and I totally love my other sister Winnie, so please adopt us together if you can! Toby Hi there, I am Toby, and Max this is my brother Max. We are 3-year-old brown Tabbies. We were adopted from Cat Adoption Team together as kittens, but our owner decided he no longer wanted us and returned us. We are a gorgeous, sweet pair of kitties who truly deserve a wonderful forever home. We are also neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Please call 910-599-2755 if you would like to meet us. We would just love to meet you! Wilmington, NC http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/nc55.html October 2016 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 17

Thank you for taking the time to read about me. My name is Michonne and I would like to share a little about who I am! I am a sweet and loving girl who, for a pup, is low key and chill. I love to lay in laps, on beds, and with my foster siblings watching TV. I love giving kisses and like to shake hands with everyone I meet. While I do have my calm side, I do like to be active (a girl has to keep her sexy figure, you know). I love to go for walks and play fetch. Tennis balls are the bestest! My foster mom says that I am a natural at the game of fetch. My foster dad says I am smart, too. I can sit, lay, shake, look at them, and hi five on command. I am working on heel and place, but sometimes my puppy ADD kicks in, and I just want to jump and dance around! As much as I like my foster peeps and their dogs, I am working on dealing with high strung and hyper dogs. I love to play, but playing with submissive dogs works out the best. I guess I am more of a people's dog than a dog's dog. But, if they are just as chill as I am, I will cuddle with them and watch TV all night! For full explanation of our adoption process, adoption application, and fees, please visit www.meritpitbullfoundation.com or call 336-618-PITT. I am sponsored by Robyn Davis in memory of Lou. My name is Logan and I m a young, energetic, 45 pound boy who was born in October 2015. I m neutered, housetrained and cratetrained. I walk well on a leash, but need to have a fenced yard so I can run and play freely. My parents lived in a salvage yard and that is where I was born. Sadly, my puppyhood was not in a home with a family so I was not socialized with people until coming into foster. I am shy and fearful of new people so I would do best with kids over 10-years of age. I m looking for a family who has the time and patience to continue working on my socialization and to help me overcome my insecurities. Once you get to know me, you will see how sweet and affectionate I can be. I love playing with other dogs and will need to have at least one, if not more, canine siblings to set an example and help me continue to build up my confidence. I had a rough start in life, but I m ready to blossom with the love and encouragement from the right family. Could it be yours? Please contact my Echo Dogs foster mom at 910-200-4782 or learn more about me at www.echodogs.org. I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

Please call 910-253-1375 to adopt us! Cat Tails Chance is a good name for a lucky kitty and I m a very lucky kitty! I had an injury that crushed much of the bone in my upper leg. Cat Tails made me rest in my cage and, since I m young and healthy, the bone pieces knitted on their own. I might have some arthritis when I m old but that s ok. I feel great now and barely even a limp. I m just a great looking, black and white boy who is 4-months-old. Now, I hope I m lucky enough to find a new home with you! I would like to know why I haven t been adopted! I m a petite 18-monthold boy who is dark orange and very handsome. Maybe it s because I m named after a politician, Agnew (bad year for that). Maybe it s because I m shy, even a little skittish, until I get to know you. Maybe it s because I love french fries though I m never sure if I want to eat them or play with them. I don t know why, but won t someone please give me a chance. Really, I m very friendly! I m told that Pazzo is an Italian word that means crazy and when I was little, I was crazy! Aren t we all? Now, however, I m a lovely, solid gray young lady of 6-months and way too mature and sophisticated to be called Pazzo. If you like gray cats or Russian Blue kitties, come meet me or my sister, Pitapat. We can go to your house and be together forever. I m Snooker and I have two strikes against me. One, I m a 6-month-old solid black boy in a shelter during October. I know that sounds like more than one strike, but I m only counting it as one! And, two, I have a cataract. A cat with a cataract sounds like a joke but it s really just a cloudy spot on one of my eyes. I m used to the blurred vision since I ve had it for a long time. But, you know what would make me really happy? My very own forever home! Could you be my lucky third strike? Beautiful longhaired Tabbies like me don t usually hang around long, but I m shy and don t do well at Petsmart adoption fairs. That makes it hard for me to meet people. I m Ellie and I love people. I prefer to be queen bee but I could probably lower my standards and tolerate another cat. I am 4-years-old, which is young in cat years, so we have plenty of time together. Bailey Bacardi If you want one of those umbrella drinks, you re looking for me, Bacardi. If you want something smooth and mellow, look for my brother, Bailey. We re 5-month-old brothers and most people can t even tell us apart. We are both part Siamese and have beautiful pale blue eyes. Like most brothers our age, we can get a little wild and crazy, but we ll keep you laughing! 6622 Beach Drive SW, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469 www.cattails.org October 2016 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 19

Hi there! My name is Nick. Foster mom calls me a big ole goober because I can be a bit goofy at times and I make her giggle. I like to make people giggle. She also says I am a gentle giant. Giant? I thought for sure I was a lap dog! I love to snuggle with her and lay my head (or my whole body) on her when I get sleepy. I am house and crate-trained. I love to get out of the house and go on walks around my neighborhood. I like toys but my absolute favorite things in the world are my blankies. I like to suckle on them. Foster mom says I like cats a little too much so I should probably not be in a home with them. She also says I should probably not be in a home with really small children because I am a BIG boy, and am probably a bit too big for the littles! I love my foster home, but I really hope to find a family of my own one day. Could you be my FURever family? For info, visit www.meritpitbullfoundation.com/how-to-adopt, email info@mpbf.org or call Merit Pit Bull Foundation at 336-618-PITT. I am sponsored by the Ocean Grill and Tiki Bar in Carolina Beach. My name is Dottie and I am an adorable, plush grey and white kitten who is about 6-monthsold. I am friendly and playful. I do really great with kids and other cats, but haven't had much exposure to dogs. Teenagers have it tough, so please consider a teenager when adopting. Most people who are looking for kittens are wanting them as young as they can possibly get - so they look at me and my littermates and say, "They are too old." Too old? I am only 6-months-old. People who want adults say, "I don't want a kitten who will tear my curtains up and then look at me and my littermates and say, "They are too young." Too young? I am 6-months-old. I pray there will be that special person who walks up, looks at me and says, "You are just right!" I am still hoping and waiting and growing lonelier each day. Being homeless is no fun. Please come see me at Petco on weekends and remember: the overlooked teenagers deserve a chance, too. To know more about me or inquire about the adoption process, call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392- 0557 or visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net. I am sponsored by Perry Davis. Thank you!

You can fall from the sky, you can fall from a tree but the best way to fall...is in love with me! Hi, I'm Champ and I am looking for my forever home! My previous owner surrendered me because she got a busy job and could no longer provide the care I need and deserve. I am a 2-year-old German Shepherd mix, about 70 pounds with lots of energy. I am looking for a loving family with a fenced-in yard with lots of room to run and play. I know my basic commands - sit, stay, lay down and paw - and I love to learn new tricks. I m also house-trained, neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Stop by the Pender Humane Society shelter today to meet me and you will see just how smart I am! Their phone number is 910-259-7022. Sponsored in memory of Milo, the big black dog who stole our hearts! Mommy and Daddy miss you every day!

My name is Missy and I am a wonderful mother cat who raised 7 kittens. Many were not even mine, but when the shelter kept sitting them in front of me, I took them in with open paws. Who could turn an orphan kitten away? Now, several months later, all that is left is Bailey and myself. She is a solid black female who is now 6-months-old and we have been coming to adoption fairs ALL summer long. Every weekend we go back to our foster home empty handed. We don't have to be adopted together. It's ok if we are separated. We both need a home and can't afford to languish in foster care waiting to be adopted together. I am great with other cats and I love kids, but I don't like dogs at all. You may not even see Bailey in this picture, so look closely. Our black fur blends together and that makes it hard for us to get noticed. We are both super loveable and friendly. We love to snuggle and follow you around. Come see us at Petco on weekends. To know more about us or to inquire about the adoption process, call 910-392-0557 or visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net. We are sponsored by Perry Davis. Thank you! URGENT, URGENT! I have already been spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. Please stop by the kennel! I'll be so very happy to see you. Hey folks, I'm Winston! I m a 10-month-old stout boy with great energy. I am quite smart and am learning, but need a good leader. I could wrestle with my friends all day, but enjoy being trained as I'm food motivated. Over the summer, I've been resting in the kiddie pool. I love that! I came to Paws Place with very little hair, almost bald! With TLC, quality food, and medicated baths I have a beautiful blond coat. Won t you come meet me? Hi, I'm Madison, a fluffy puppy who was found by a Paws Place volunteer. With no tags or microchip, my owner was never located. My story was shared with Animal Services and on social media, but no luck. I have been spayed, vaccinated, examined by a vet and it's time to check out of Paws Place. Hi, my name is Little Man. My world went through a sudden change and my owner had to give me and my friend up. Now, I m looking for a new home so I need to tell you a little about who I am. I m a Toy Poodle and around 9-years-old. For those of you who don t know Poodles, we tend to have long lives for dogs, so I m in my prime! My favorite thing to do is to be in someone s lap. I m great on a chilly night or I ll snuggle watching a movie or reading a book. The people at Carolina Poodle Rescue say that I have a very even-keeled personality. I d like my home to be the same way. I love for things to be calm and quiet. They also say that I m like a little old man who likes to sit on the porch in the rocking chair and watch the world go by. But I d like to do it with my forever person or people. I m really wellbehaved and will make a great companion. When I first meet someone, I m a little bashful but I warm up quickly. A few kind words and maybe a treat and I m eager to be friends. I do great with other dogs. In my former home, I had a Poodle sister but I would also be fine being the only dog - as long as someone could spend time with me. If you re looking for a gentle little guy with a warm heart, call 864-489-3559 or visit www.carolinapoodlerescue.org. I am sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has rescued a homeless animal. I am a little timid but that will go away once I feel settled. My foster mom has been teaching me tricks. I do well with other dogs but very young children scare me. Obviously, the rescue group saw the potential in me! I am 7-years-old and have been fully vetted. I was very glad when they told us I was heartworm negative. I am house-trained and like people and dogs but can not be around cats as they tempt me too much. I am a very happy and wiggly guy who just wants to have fun. My goal in life is to have fun, fun, fun and then some more fun. Life is meant to live and I m going to love it to the fullest. Please call to adopt me. Minnie is my name and I am not as scared as my picture presents me to be. My puppies and I were taken in by R.A.C.E. when we d run out of time at a local shelter. Please call 910-457-6340 to adopt us! What a story I have! I'm Minnie and I came to SOAR from a Duplin County rescue where I was abandoned with my seven kittens. And to top it off - they found out I am FIV positive. Luckily my kittens were fine - but that left me with no place to live. Thankfully, the wonderful people at SOAR had just adopted out 2 of their FIV cats, so that opened up a space for ME! I'm a sweet girl, a little over 2-years-old, vaccinated and spayed. I have to live indoors only and either be adopted by myself or with another FIV cat. Other than that - I have no restrictions! I'm Doofy (the orange and white boy on the left) and I was supposed to be the one featured in the magazine this month. But my girlfriend, Mimi, wanted to show her stuff too - so I said OK! We are both FeLV (feline leukemia) positive but it's not a problem for either of us if it's not a problem for you! I m the more outgoing one and Mimi is a little shy. I'm about 6-years-old and she s about 5-years-old and we re in overall good health. We must both be strictly indoor cats and must either be adopted singly or with another FeLV cat. Come meet us today, please! SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue) You may be wondering why you are seeing me again! I keep asking myself the same thing. I'm Tommy and I just turned 3 in July. Not only am I handsome, but I am super sweet. I m laid-back and I live in the open room with other cats so I definitely get along OK with other felines. Minion, pictured below, is my best friend! We like to play together and we even share the same bed for our catnaps. Stop by the shelter sometime soon and see us! Hello, I m Minion! I got my name because I was tiny when I first came to SOAR. That was 1-year ago. A lady saw me get thrown out of a car window on the highway! Thank goodness she took care of me until I was able to come to SOAR! As you can see, I have grown into a very handsome boy. I m super-sweet and have a purr that goes on for days! I do ok with other cats. In fact, I had a feral kitten living with me in my cat kennel for awhile until she got adopted! I do get scared and defensive around dogs, so I should live in a dog-free household. Come meet me! I know you have seen me in here before and I don't know why I'm still at SOAR! I'm Oliver. My two brothers and I came to SOAR as tiny kittens - that was almost 3 years ago! For some reason, they got adopted but I never have! And I really don't understand why! I am always on my best behavior. I don't mind if you pick me up and I love to talk! I'm a sweet boy and I live in the open room with other cats - so if you give me time to adjust and introduce me to another cat the correct way - I think I would be ok. But if you just want me to be your one and only kitty, that would be fine too. Please consider taking me home! If Russian Blue is your favorite color - then I am the girl for you! My name is Fiona and my birthday is in November. I will be 4-years-old! I was found on Oak Island by a nice lady who let me live on her porch. But when I had my kittens she could not let us all move in the house with her so I came to live at SOAR. I stay in a kennel by myself and I like it that way! I guess what I am saying is that I want to be your one and only. I look forward to meeting you here soon! 3376 St. Charles Place Southport, NC 28461 www.soar-nc.org October 2016 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 39

The Power of 10 is Greater Would you be one of 10? Canines for Service launched a Power of 10 fundraising campaign on September 1, 2016. The goal of the 100-day initiative is to raise $60,000 the cost to train and partner two service dogs. Service dogs change a persons life with the gift of independence. The Power of 10 starts with 10 supporters donating 10 dollars each to Canines for Service. They, in turn, ask ten of their friends to do the same, who then ask ten more friends, creating a powerful wave of support and fundraising dollars. Canines for Service operates from a 5,000 sq. ft. of space on Old Dairy Road. The long awaited expansion has provided the opportunity to initiate a Veterans internship program teaching Veterans new job skills learning how to train service dogs for Veterans with disabilities. In the upcoming months, the program will expand again to offer a fee based learning opportunity for service dog training. Since bringing the Canines for Veterans program back to Wilmington in June 2015, we had been stretched to maximum capacity with little room for service dog training or to increase the number of dogs in training, offer more pet therapy classes and the aspects of daily business, says Rick Hairston, President and CEO. Now, the service dog training has the much needed space to achieve our mission, we can bring more dogs in to train and have already grown with the intern program. For more info, email phairston@caninesforservice.org, www.caninesforservice.org/powerrof10 or call 910-362- 8181. 40 www.pawprintsmagazine.com October 2016

Johnsons Corner Grill and Convenience Store Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Served All Day Pay at the Pump Open 24 Hours 910-259-4367 9031 US Hwy 421, Currie, NC Open 7 days week! Monday - Saturday 4:30am to 8pm Sunday 6:30am to 8pm What do you get when you cross a Basset and a Lab? You get us! My name is Cora and I act like a Basset all day long and so does my bestie, Chloe (who is a little taller than me)! We have the short stature like a Basset Hound and that wonderful personality of both a Basset and Lab! We are a perfectly matched set with a bit of a hard luck story. Both of us were adopted then dumped in a shelter when our humans no longer wanted us. We just don't understand what we did wrong! All we wanted is to love our humans and please them. So, we are now looking for a new home. We are very bonded at 5 to 9-years of age, so we really need to be adopted together. We love to play, love to walk, and we get along with other dogs! I get a little nervous with lots of people coming and going, but Chloe takes everything in stride. We are both very smart, obedient, house-trained and listen to commands our foster mom gives us. We ride well in the car and love everyone and every dog we have met so far. Wouldn t we be a great set of twins for your perfect loving home? If you are interested, please call Carolina Basset Hound Rescue at 888-909-2387 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com. Also, we are always short on foster homes! If you have ever thought about fostering, please contact us for more details. We are sponsored by Aunt Kerry s Pet Stop in loving memory of Tom Grady who was passionate about bringing awareness to rescue animals. He was a true gem to our community and will be greatly missed!

Breed Rescues We are all from different Breed Rescues. Please read our stories! GREAT DANE FRIENDS OF RUFF LOVE Hi, my name is Duke and I'm a 3 to 4-year-old Great Dane boy who is looking for a forever home. My foster mom says I m a bit underweight and heartworm positive. I m currently undergoing heartworm treatment and getting neutered, and then I can go to my forever home! I walk well on a leash and I know my basic commands. I am great with other dogs large and small and also horses and chickens! I am a complete love bug! I just want to be close to you all of the time and I love to snuggle my head in my foster mom s lap. If she stops petting me, I lift my paw and gently tap her to remind her to continue petting. Living inside with people is the best! I am great with older kids but the younger, energetic kids, who like to make a lot of noise and dart past me, tend to get me a little too excited. It should probably go to a home that has kids over the age of 10. Someday soon I hope to find a patient family who will continue to work with me on my health and obedience. Please send an email to GDFRL at greatdanefriend@yahoo.com for an adoption application, call 704-584-9257 or visit www.greatdanefriends.com. I'm current on vaccinations and heartworm prevention and I m already neutered. I love to play and have a lot of energy. I get along with cats and dogs and kids, but I'm pretty rambunctious - so I need a home with kids who are bigger. That way I won't get in trouble for bumping into the little ones. I would love a family that has time to play with me. I like playing in the yard, going for runs, and stealing food off the counter (oopsie). If you have the time to polish my manners and spend some time playing with me everyday, please visit www.tarheelweimrescue.org or call 910-232-5910. MERIT PIT BULL FOUNDATION My name is Pop! I love to sunbathe in the yard and play with my foster fur siblings. I get along great with other dogs and I LOVE hanging out with kids when I go to Merit's events. I'm a big snuggler (and snorer, hee hee)! I'm also quite the comedian - I make my foster parents laugh a lot with my lack of coordination...it's on purpose though, I love to make everyone around me happy! For explanation of our adoption process, application, and fees please visit www.meritpitbullfoundation.com, email info@mpbf.org or call 336-618-PITT.
