But some dogs do more than just play. Some dogs do special jobs for us, and they do them very well. The American Humane Association calls these dogs hero dogs. The Association wanted to help one group that could not help itself: animals. They wanted to keep all animals safe and protected. The Association helped to find homes for the many horses and mules who served the Army in World War I. Since the war, the Association has rescued animals trapped in natural disasters like floods and fires. They also watch movie productions in Hollywood. The people in the Association visit movie sets whenever animals are being filmed. They make sure the animals are kept safe. The owner of the American Hero Dog receives a $10,000 prize. The prize goes to a charity chosen by the owner. What kind of a dog receives the grand prize? Meet Roselle. Roselle is a Labrador Retriever. She is a guide dog for a blind man. On September 11, 2001, she led her owner down 78 fl ights of stairs, out of the burning Twin Towers building.
