INTRODUCTION Welcome to the fifth Females with Figures sale. We can t really believe that it is 5 years since we decided that there was a place for an early sale of Charollais females that could be bought in time to tup for December lambing. We hoped the Females with Figures sale would be a useful alternative to the in lamb sales in the autumn allowing purchasers to select ewes to put to a tup of their choosing and to lamb at a time of year that suits their farm. The sale date in June was chosen to give purchasers enough time to plan their breeding programmes and sponge ewes ready to AI or tup in early July and lamb around the 1st December. We believe that you cannot know whether you improve something unless you measure it. Weight records and scanning information are valuable additional tools when selecting breeding stock. They don t replace your own judgement in looking at an animal but they provide measurements that your eyes don t see. The overall EBVs for each trait give comparisons between different sheep based on their own performance and that of their breeding relations regardless of how well they have been fed or prepared for sale. All the sheep for sale are from flocks that record with Signet Sheepbreeder Sevices. All have their Estimated Breeding Values (EBV) displayed in the catalogue with their Pedigree information to enable you to make a selection based on all the factors which are important for your flock. Basic information on EBVs and the Benchmark Charollais data is shown overleaf. If you need any explanation we will be happy to discuss anything with you before or at the Sale. We are very pleased to have consignments this year from Chris Crowther, Neil Oughton and Dave Roberts. They all produce genuine sheep with good figures and good breeding and the potential to do well in any flock. If you wish to purchase ewes for export please contact us to discuss arrangements as the procedures for different countries can vary and we will try to accommodate whatever is required either before or after the sale. Our auctioneer is Clive Roads of McCartneys who will answer any questions you have. His phone number is 01905 769770. Andrew Walton and Mark Rushbrooke 3

The sale is held under the auspices of the British Charollais Sheep Society and all sheep will be sold subject to the Rules and Conditions of the Society. All sheep will have been subject to INSPECTION by an official Society Inspector. The sheep are from MAEDI VISNA ACCREDITED FLOCKS registered with the SAC Sheep & Goat Health Scheme. PEDIGREE CERTIFICATES will be available at the Auction Mart Office on the day of the sale, together with Scrapie Genotype Certificates. All sheep in the sale are Full Pedigree Registered. BRETTLES FLOCK WF Mark & Margie Rushbrooke Brettles Farm, Shatterford, Bewdley, Worcs DY12 1TJ Tel: 01299 861200 Mobile: 07748 305857 email: mandmrushbrooke@gmail.com Website: www.brettlesfarm.co.uk We were very pleased to sell all but one of our 14 females at this sale last year but the highlight was 3 weeks later at the Premier Sale selling Brettles Sherman for an amazing 7,000gns (pictured right). His sire, Rainbow Road to Utopia, was the highest index sire used in 2017. One of the shearling ewes and two of the ewe lambs in this year s sale are sired by him so you have the chance to purchase some of that breeding. We have entered 10 shearlings again this year, 6 by Brettles Patriot, 1 by Inverae Oisian, 1 by Foulrice Pacemaker, 1 by Rainbow Road to Utopia and 1 by Dalby Rumpole. We have also chosen 4 ewe lambs. 2 are by Rainbow Road to Utopia, 1 by Rumpole and 1 by Patriot. Our flock consists some 90 ewes and we have aimed to improve the quality by buying rams that combine correctness with good growth and muscle figures. We have been recording with Signet for over 20 years and believe that in order to improve you must measure and record but never be a slave to the figures. Since the year 2000 our overall average index for our lambs has risen from 150 to 334 this year. Dave showing Brettles Peaches - Breed champion 3 Counties 2016 6 All the ewes and rams in our flock are ARR/ARR genotype and all our sale yearlings and lambs have been genotyped for purchasers peace of mind. Good conformation and good figures is our aim and although we hardly enter shows ourselves we were very proud when Dave Roberts won the Charollais Championship at the Royal Three

Counties Show in 2016 with a high index ewe, Brettles Peaches, (pictured below left) purchased as a lamb at the Females with Figures Sale the year before. He also won the Interbreed Championship at Shropshire Show with a ewe purchased at the same sale! His great skill in selecting, preparing and showing were responsible for his success but it is rewarding to think that the breeding must have been right too! RAINBOW FLOCK XPU Andrew and Jan Walton Church Farm, Backford, Chester, CH2 4BE Tel: 01244 851705 or 07710 522387 Twitter@MeatyAndrew - Facebook: Rainbow Charollais BBuilding on the success of previous sales and positive feedback from the purchasers we return this year with an even higher average index group of sheep! All figures are based on the May Basco run. As productive genetics become more important to the UK sheep industry, we will continue to develop our breeding policy to deliver market requirements for growth and muscling. We were delighted to have won the Goldenballs competition at the Premier sale as this vindicates our selection for correctness and functionality. Our cull lambs consistently attain high prices in the spring lamb market which emphasis the commercial way in which we manage the flock. The use of CT scanning has added value to our flock with deadweight lambs grading at U grades or better consistently. We are also delighted to be involved with the RamCompare project both through using sires within our cross bred flock and supplying rams onto the trial farms. The shearlings offered for sale today have been outside on a forage diet throughout the winter and all females on offer have the potential to produce stock rams and will add value to your flock. 8

Health Information We are MV accredited and although not tested all sheep are ARR/ARR. Both the shearlings and ewes have been vaccinated with: Footvax Toxovax, Enzovax, Footvax, Campyvax and Zulvac for SBV All sheep are in the Heptavac P+ system. Ewes and shearlings were wormed with Dectomax in March 2018 Sire Information This year we invested in some new bloodlines and there are females on offer by the following rams: From left to right Wedderburn Peleus Top 5% for all traits! The sale is growing in popularity and we have had some good reports on the sheep we sold last year. This year we have entered 3 yearling ewes and 2 ewe lambs. The yearling ewes are out of some tried and tested Dudston ewes by Dudston Percy (15YBZ00211) (pictured below right), a heavily muscled ram by Edstaston Normandy 13TG00253 who has been a prolific ram in the Edstaston flock. I chose Charollais for its natural fleshing ability, superior growth rates and ease of lambing. This has always been kept in mind as I feel a good pedigree animal should also be what the commercial man would be looking for... good wide top lines, great gigots and easy finishing! This is the first time females from the Boyo flock have been offered for sale and I am pleased to offer ones of a very high standard (including some from my show team), that will hopefully suit everybody. Shearling ewes were shorn bare on the 1st April apart from lot 10 (dam pictured left) who was shorn on the 17th February as she is a member of this year s show team. LOWERYE FLOCK ZVY Neil Oughton Lymore Farm, Montgomery, Powys, SY15 6UL Tel: 01686 668228 Mobile: 07977458544 Email: neil@lowerye.com Iwas pleased to have been asked to support the Females with Figures sale. Like many, I started the pedigree flock after having been impressed by the Charollais rams used over our commercial flock. What started out as a small sideline in 1990, soon expanded and I have been running in excess of 200 pedigree ewes for well over a decade now. I run the flock on an increasingly commercial basis, and apart from a handful of ram lambs at the Premier Sale, we produce shearling rams for private sale. To suit labour (me) and buildings, I lamb around 100 ewes in December, with the remainder lambing in March. The early lambs are offered creep until the grass gets going, when they are weaned onto a forage only diet. The March lambs get no creep at all, providing a check that our genetics will perform without a trough. All sheep from then to the point of sale, are run round on a strictly forage only diet, with root crops grazed through the winter. I sell between 80 and 100 shearling rams annually, with almost all sold privately and most to repeat customers. We occasionally buy in genetics through semen or ram purchase, but make heavy use of home bred sires where they have performed exceptionally on my system, using both Signet recording and a stockman s eye as selection tools. My stock sires are all expected to produce sheep that will perform without hard feed. To that end, they are all used extensively in my 600 strong commercial flock, which is lambed outdoors in April and is also managed on a zero concentrate diet. All lambs are expected to finish off grazed feed. I truly believe this is the only economic way forward for the UK sheep industry. The flock has been Signet recorded since 1993, with a selection of ram lambs being CT scanned each year. Indeed, our lambs were involved in the early calibration work for the CT scanning system. I believe the extra 12

information this process reveals is extremely valuable and most of our stock rams have been through the machine. We have bred many lambs that have been at the very top of those scanned, for muscularity traits. I have always tried to concentrate on the qualities that drew us to the breed in the first place, being a wedge shape, medium bone and a well fleshed loin and gigot. The superior fleshing qualities of our breeding has meant that the flock was the highest ranked flock with Signet for many years, up until the recent reweighting, with 2/3 of the top one hundred lambs being bred at Lowerye for several years. Any lambs that don t make it through my ruthless selection, regardless of breeding or index, are sold through the live market at premium prices. A homebred ram, Lowerye Ronnie (pictured below right), is the highest index sire in the breed following the March BLUP run, having already sired a lamb with the breed leading muscularity ebv of +10.32. Another hombred ram, Lowerye Rioja, has sired the highest gigot score sheep of this year s CT lambs. I offer a small selection of ewes and ewe lambs for sale, all of which I would happily retain. I have every confidence that they will go on and produce well for their new owners. They are not individually genotyped, but all ewes in the flock are believed to be Group 1, and all rams used in the last 18 years have been ARR/ARR. The flock has been Scrapie Monitored for many years. As you would expect from such a highly ranked flock, the sheep offered are all of high genetic merit, all bar one being within the top 10% of the breed on Signet index. The shearling ewes have been vaccinated against Toxoplasma and Campylobacter abortions as ewe lambs, and all are on the Heptavac P system. 13 Lowerye Ronnie - 16ZVY02674

CAMP HOUSE FLOCK ZAB Robert Towers Camp House Farm, Farleton, Lancaster LA2 9LH Tel: 01524 221273 Mobile: 07989 975179 Email: jacchfarm@hotmail.co.uk MV Accredited The Flock was established in 1987 after using a Charollais ram on Masham ewes in 1986. We were very impressed, so a year later bought 4 Charollais in-lamb ewes. This started as a hobby but 4 years later it was added to the business when the Flock increased. The Flock is run commercially, selling 100 rams a year and selling plenty of Easter lambs. This year we were delighted to win 4 Easter shows at our local markets and last year, we showed the Flock successfully, competing at 13 shows in 4 counties, winning several championships. We have kept lambing simple, by selling ewes out of sync with the main Flock and replacing with in-lamb ewes lambing at the same time, which has also increased new bloodlines to the Camp House Flock. All stock rams used are ARR/ARR. We have decided to reduce the Flock by offering 20 ewes & 20 shearling ewes for sale. All sheep are in the Heptavac P+ system, and been vaccinated with Footvax, Toxovax and Enzovax. The ewes have been fluked and wormed and been treated with Clik Extra. Although we have never had a problem with it, we decided to give the ewes the Schmallenberg vaccine, to cover them wherever they go in the country after the sale.
