The Scoop on Poop You can learn a lot about your cat's health from his poop. Whether you ve just adopted your first kitten or you ve shared your home with cats for years, watch for a few key signs when you scoop out the litter box. Cat Poop: What s Normal? Most cats will poop at least once a day. If they re healthy, their poop should: Be deep brown in color Feel not too hard or too soft or mushy Not smell too foul, though some odor is normal Diarrhea Diarrhea is not uncommon for cats, and there are many reasons why your cat might have it. Sometimes, it comes and goes quickly. Other times, it can last for days, weeks, or months, or come back on a regular basis. Diarrhea that lasts for 24 to 48 hours probably won t cause a problem, but if it lasts longer, your cat can get dehydrated, which can be dangerous. Some common causes of cat diarrhea include: Changes to their diet or food allergies or intolerances Inflammatory bowel disease Colitis Hyperthyroidism Worms (intestinal parasites) Pancreatic disease Cancer If your cat has diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two, see your veterinarian to figure out the cause. Call your vet right away if the diarrhea is black or bloody, or if it happens along with fever, vomiting, sluggishness, or a loss of appetite. The treatment your cat will need depends on what s causing his diarrhea. Some will need prescription medications, such as metronidazole or prednisolone, to control inflammation. Your vet may recommend a special diet if she thinks a food allergy or intolerance, IBD, or colitis is the problem. To prevent diarrhea, don t give your cat dairy products like milk or yogurt -- many cats can t digest them properly. Also, if you switch the brand or type of food you give him, be sure to introduce it over several days by mixing it with smaller and smaller amounts of the old food until he s eating only the new stuff. Constipation When a cat is constipated, he ll strain a lot when he tries to poop or won t be able to produce anything for the litter box. You don t need to worry if it only happens sometimes. But if it s more common for your pet, you should contact your vet. Cats can get constipated for a number of reasons, including: Over-grooming, which leads to extra hair in the digestive tract Kidney problems Feline megacolon -- when the colon gets very large and its muscles no longer squeeze, making hard, dry stool build up inside Something blocking their colon, such as string or bones Diets that don t have enough fiber Problems inside the colon, such as tumors or narrow places Spine problems or pain 6 (Continued on page 10)

Eye Care Seeing eye to eye with your cat may be one of the best things you ever do for her health. A good home eye exam just before grooming can clue you into any tearing, crust, cloudiness or inflammation that may indicate a health problem. Here are few simple tips to keep your kitty s eyes bright, healthy and on the prize-you! Home Inspection Face your cat in a brightly lit area and look her in the eyes. They should be clear and bright, and the area around the eyeball should be white. Her pupils should be equal in size. A Closer Look Roll down your kitty s eyelid gently with your thumb and take a look at the lid s lining. It should be pink, not red or white. What to Watch Out For How can you tell if there is something wrong with one or both of your cat s eyes? Look out for the following: Discharge Watering Red or white eyelid linings Crusty gunk in the corners of the eye Tear-stained fur Closed eye(s) Cloudiness or change in eye color Visible third eyelid Eye-Catching Behavior Certain body language will also alert you to possible eye distress. If your cat is constantly squinting or pawing at her eye area, give her eyes a good inspection. If you find any of the above symptoms, you should immediately call your vet. A Little Wipe Goes A Long Way Wipe away any crusty gunk from your cat s eyes with a damp cotton ball. Always wipe away from the corner of the eye, and use a fresh cotton ball for each eye. Snip away any long hairs that could be blocking her vision or poking her eyes. Try not to use eye washes or eye drops unless they ve been prescribed by your vet. If you notice unnatural discharge during your grooming session, consult your vet. Know Thy Eye Disorders The following eye-related disorders are commonly seen in cats: Conjunctivitis: One or both of your cat s eyes will look red and swollen, and there may be discharge. Third eyelid protrusion: If the third eyelid becomes visible or crosses your cat s eye, he may have a wound or may be suffering from diarrhea, worms or a virus. Keratitis: If your cat s cornea becomes inflamed, the eye will look cloudy and watery. Cataracts: This opacity on the eye is often seen in elderly and diabetic cats. Glaucoma: The cornea becomes cloudy and the eye enlarges due to an increased pressure in the eyeball. Bulging eye: Bulging can occur because of accident or trauma or an eye tumor. Retinal disease: Partial or total vision loss can happen when light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye degenerate. Watery eyes: The fur around your cat s eyes may be stained with tears because of blocked tear ducts or an overproduction of tears. Treating Eye Conditions Many feline eye disorders can be treated with vet-prescribed drops or ointments-your vet will show you how to apply eye and ear drops at home. Preventing Eye Problems The best way to prevent eye conditions is to make sure your cat gets all her vaccinations and has thorough check-ups. Please examine her eyes regularly and consult a vet if you find any abnormalities. Eye conditions that are left untreated can lead to impaired sight or even blindness. Breed Feature Siberians Appearance The Siberian cat is a large, hefty cat with males being somewhat larger than the females. They are slow growing, taking up to 5 years to reach their full size. They are semi-long haired with a triple coat including a dense soft undercoat, and an outercoat of thick, shiny "guard hairs" which gives the coat a waterproof quality. Their first full adult coat usually comes in the winter after their first birthday including a beautiful ruff around their head, making them look like little lions! They also have tufts of fur between their paw pads and brushes of fur coming out from their ears equipping them for snowy weather and beautiful "lynx tips" on their ears which helps to give them their wild look. The cat registries' Siberian breed standards go into more detail about exactly how a Siberian cat should look. As we show our cats in NSW CFA and previously in TICA these are the standards we aim for in our kittens. Click on the following links to see the standards: TICA Siberian Breed Standard NSW CFA Siberian Breed Standard WCF Siberian Breed Standard FIFe Siberian Breed Standard The Siberian cat comes in a rainbow of colours including brown, red, blue, cream, gold, silver, smoke, tortie, white, and colour point. Here at Snowgum, our cats have the genes to produce brown, silver, golden, blue, blue-golden, bluesilver, red, cream and torbie kittens. Some will be with white (like Indiana and Astra) and others without. All of our kittens will have a beautiful mackerel tabby (striped), classic tabby (blotched), spotted or shaded tabby pattern and beautiful green or gold and green eyes. For details and images of cat colours please see our Siberian Cat Colours page. Temperament Siberian cats are often described as having a "dog-like" personality. They are loyal, affectionate, playful and want to be your best friend. Our cats greet us at the door when we come home, follow us from room to room wanting to hang out where ever we are and help with what ever we are doing! Meadow even plays fetch like a dog! They are very intelligent cats and will quickly work out how to open doors and how to get their favourite toy from its hiding spot! They mix easily with other animals including dogs and because they are a gentle, loving cat they are also a great breed for families with small children. Our kids have grown up with our cats around them; my daughter's first word was her favourite cat's name, "Dasha". Some Siberians are lap cats and will loving nothing better than snuggling on your lap, others are sightly more independent and prefer to sit next to you on the sofa rather than right on your lap. Either way, they love to interact with you and will play with you for as long as you have the stamina! They will want to be involved with your every day activities and enjoy "helping" you with your chores or your reading or typing - a newspaper or keyboard is the best place for a Siberian to take a nap when you have some reading or writing to do! Lifespan An average lifespan for a Siberian cat is between 11 and 15 years. Some Siberians have however, been known to live 8 (Continued on page 9)

Breed Feature Siberians (Continued from page 8) 20+ years! Keep in mind that your kitten will be more likely to live a long live if it is fed a healthy low carbohydrate diet, given good vet care and kept away from the dangers of the roads. When considering buying a kitten you should be prepared to give it a loving home for the next decade or two. Buying a kitten is not something to be done on a whim; it is a commitment for the lifetime of the animal and should only be done after much consideration. Health The Siberian cat is one of the 3 breeds of "forest" cats, and is one of the oldest "natural" breeds of cats, meaning they are not a human developed breed created by crossing various other breeds. As a result, they are a robust healthy breed able to survive in harsh winters and with few known health problems. In recent years two genetic diseases have appeared in the breed: Polycystic Kidney Disease(PKD) and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). Our cats have been DNA tested and are negative for the gene responsible for PKD. Unfortunately the genes responsible for HCM in Siberians has not yet been identified. DNA tests for HCM exist for the Maine Coon and Ragdoll breeds however these tests are not valid for testing Siberians. Performing an echocardiogram (ultrasound) on Siberian cats, is the only way of truly testing for the disease. Ultrasounds are not infallible as they are a point in time test however, they are the best tool available at present and provide some reasurrance that the breeding cat is healthy and free from the disease. Our cats' hearts are given echocardiograms by a specialist in veterinary cardiology, Niek Jozef Beijerink, DVM MS PhD Dipl ECVIM-CA (Cardiology). We have started an annual screening program to ensure our cats are free from this disease. We are also careful about choosing breeding cats from lines which have not had any reported HCM and we know the parents of our cats are all alive and healthy and are free from any symptoms of this condition. It is important to note that blood tests are not a valid method of identifying HCM, these are in fact only useful for identifying a cat in the late stages of heart failure. These tests should not therefore be used as a testing tool for a breeding program. History Siberian is the name given to Russia's native semi-longhaired cat. There is a lack of historical information about Siberian cats so many stories have developed over time to explain the breed's origin. Siberian cats were apparently first documented in the year 1000 though they were not a pedigreed breed at this stage, but rather were the mouse catchers in the streets and homes throughout Russia. 9 The Siberian cat was considered to be a large, solid cat with a waterproof coat and thick undercoat. Due to their appearance these cats could survive in the cold, severe climate. The cats were seen in a wide variety of colours. The modern Siberian as we know it, is the result of the development of a written "breed standard" for the cat and of the hard work and time of many breeders and judges. In the late 1980's the first imported cat breeds started to appear in

Breed Feature - Siberians (Continued from page 9) Russia and the first cat shows were held there. It was decided that a breed standard should be developed to distinguish these large, fluffy Russian cats from the other long haired cat breeds. The President of the Kotofei club, Olga Mironva developed the first Siberian breed description. A brown tabby and white Siberian stud Roman, born in 1987 was used as the basis for this first written standard. He appears in many pedigrees (including our Indiana's) and was one of the foundation cats for the breed. The WCF was the first international cat registry to accept the Siberian Cat, including the colour point Siberian, nicknamed the "Neva Masquerade". A blue tabby point with white stud called Mars born in 1988 was the founding colour point of the breed. Mars and Roman can be seen at the beginning of many Siberian pedigrees even today. In 1988 judges from abroad began to visit Russian shows and this sparked an international interest in the Siberian cat. The first Siberians entered Australia quite a bit later in 2003 from the US. There are now quite a number of Siberian cat breeders in Australia and the number is increasing every year as more people meet and fall in love with the wonderful Siberian breed. For a more detailed account of the history of the Siberian Cat Breed please follow this link to a history written by Dr. Irina Sadovnikova, WCF judge and Russian breeder of Siberian Cats: Siberian Cat History To ease your cat s constipation, your vet may suggest that you give him more fiber, such as by adding canned pumpkin to his regular food. Or she might tell you to change to food that s easier for your pet to digest. It also helps to make sure he gets more exercise and drinks more water so that waste will move through his system more readily. Symptom Appearance Frequency Possible causes Constipation Small, hard, dry poop Less than once a day Dehydration, megacolon, dietary issues Constipation Small, hard, dry poop that has a lot of hair Less than once a day Hairballs, over-grooming Constipation Thin, ribbon-like poop Less than once a day Colon problems, like a tumor Diarrhea Black, tarry, runny poop It varies Stomach or intestinal bleeding. Call the vet right away Diarrhea Smelly, pudding-like poop 2-3 times daily Food intolerances, inflammatory bowel disease Diarrhea Gooey poop filled with mucus Multiple times daily Too little fiber; colitis Diarrhea Soft, frothy, greasy poop with mucus It varies Parasites Ref: WebMD Veterinary Reference Reviewed by Amy Flowers, DVM on January 24, 2017 10

Advertising in Catching Up Advertising All commercial and member advertising enquiries should be directed to: Joanne Greentree - jaygee.jo@gmail.com Full Page - $150 Half Page - $100 Quarter Page - $ 65 Cattery Cards - $ 60 per year Notice to Advertisers The Trade Practices Act 1974 came into force on October 1st 1974. It is the advertiser s responsibility to ensure advertisements submitted for publication comply with the Act and that the provisions of the Act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are asked to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material. The Editorial Committee reserves the right to withhold publication of any material whatsoever. Views and opinions expressed in this journal are those of the correspondents and contributors concerned and are not necessarily those of the Editorial Committee, printers or publishers. Names and addresses of correspondents may be withdrawn from publication on request but must be supplied to the Editor. Disputes From time to time, members refer matters to the NSW Cat Fanciers Association Inc (NSW CFA) when it is not appropriate. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of cats are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual arrangements between members. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts, not by NSWCFA. Members are requested to refrain from referring matters to NSW CFA which are a private or domestic matter or which should be properly resolved by the Courts. Members should be aware that the Consumer Claims Tribunal is available to resolve many disputes in the relation to the supply of goods to a consumer and NSWCFA recommends that matters that fall within the jurisdiction of that Tribunal and which cannot be resolved personally should be referred to that Tribunal.
