CLEAN SWEEP OPTIMISE HEALTH THROUGH NUTRITION Unique nutritional product launched at NSA Welsh Sheep Rumenco has launched an innovative, new nutritional health product designed to help support existing, effective worm management programmes, at this year s NSA Welsh Sheep event. Supports animal performance & complements effective parasite control programmes 25kg mineral, trace element and vitamin tub Suitable for cattle and sheep For more details FREEPHONE 0800 833 675 Clean Sweep, is a supplementary feed bucket based on the natural active ingredient Diature TM. Rumenco s technical manager, David Thornton explains, The inclusion of this alternative ingredient helps keep on top of worm burdens, where control strategies are already in place, while the overall bucket formulation supports a balanced nutritional intake. The risk of performance loses in cattle and sheep is a real threat as anthelmintic resistance becomes an increasing challenge in tackling on-farm parasite issues. Both sub clinical and clinical worm burdens have the potential to have big knock on effects to cash flow. Rumenco have identified a unique, alternative physical method that supports existing worm control programmes and also helps reduce the risk of parasite resistance occurring, says Mr Thornton. The mode of action of Diature TM is the key factor of Clean Sweep which helps maintain low worm burdens in cattle and sheep, he says. It s comprised of components called diatoms hard shelled algae deposits. The structure of diatoms means they naturally adhere to the waxy cuticle of intestinal worms, and subsequently interfere and kill parasites by dehydration. Due to its physical action, parasites can t acquire resistance to diatomaceous earth, adds Mr Thornton. On-farm research, supported by Rumenco, has shown that lambs supplemented with Clean Sweep as part of a grazed grass diet, had lower faecal egg counts; significantly better daily live weight gains; cleaner fleeces; and improvements in foot health, compared to lambs fed a control diet. The results from the research are very significant. Clean Sweep is an exciting addition to Rumenco s growing nutritional health range. It s designed to complement existing, strategic parasite control programmes by helping to support a low worm burden in cattle and sheep over the summer grazing season. I d recommend offering the buckets ad lib, at a ratio of one bucket per 10 to 15 head of cattle, or 35 sheep, says Mr Thornton.
