Expository Sunny News for Kids People and Animals Serving Children of Dallas, Texas Sunday, August 9 Section B, Page 1 1 Topic Introduction to Allison Central Idea 2 7 A Jacket for Allison By Mason Brink SUNNY NEWS WRITER Most sea turtles naturally glide gently through the water as they swim. For a long time, an Atlantic green sea turtle named Allison was only able to swim in circles. She had only one flipper. Scientists believe Allison lost three flippers in a shark attack. Most sea turtles that lose three flippers do not live long. Allison was special. She got something very unique to help her swim and live longer. Allison lives at Sea Turtle Incorporated in South Padre Island, Texas. This is a center that helps sick or injured sea turtles. They teach people about sea turtles and their environment. Allison came to the center in 2005. This is Allison with her new flipper jacket. Many at the center did not think Allison would live. She was very small and very sick. Luckily she survived. However, with only one flipper, she could only swim in circles in her tank. She could not swim in the large tank with other rescued turtles. This was very troubling for people at the center to see. In 2009, a volunteer at the center, Tom Wilson, came up with an idea to help Allison. He cared for Allison and thought she would like to swim with the other turtles at the center. Wilson decided to make a jacket with a flipper that could be placed on Allison s body. This had never been done before. Still, Mr. Wilson wanted to give Allison Continued on next page 3 6 4 8 6 5 3 Page 4 Fisher Reyna Education 2012 Solutions for Success Reading, Grade 2

Allison continued Page 2 5 6 a second chance at swimming like other turtles. With the help of others, he created the one-ofa-kind jacket. It was a very exciting day when Allison tried her new flipper jacket. Many came to see if the jacket would really help her. People from the newspaper and television stations were at the center to see if Allison would like her new flipper jacket. Scientists from other animal centers were present. If the jacket worked, it would be big news. It could help many other injured sea turtles in the future. The jacket was carefully put on Allison s body. The crowd cheered when Allison began swimming across a 12-foot tank with other turtles. The flipper jacket was a success! Tom Wilson and his helpers knew they had created something very special for a very special sea turtle. As time goes by, Allison gets better at swimming. The flipper jacket helps Allison build strength. Volunteers hope she can spend the same amount of time swimming as other turtles at the center. For now, Tom Wilson only laughs when Allison swims away as he tries to catch her. Allison now makes Tom Wilson walk circles around her tank. 7 8 2 A sea turtle named Allison got a flipper jacket to help her swim and live longer. She lives at Sea Turtle Incorporated.
