Name: Edmond Dantès Age: 33 Gender: Male 3

Physical Description: After spending 14 years in prison, Edmond is barely recognizable as the zealous young man he once was. His face, now oval instead of round, contains firm lines of resolution. His eyes are full of a deep sadness with occasional flashes of dark hatred. Tan skin has grown pale and his body, once lean, is now stocky. 4

Personality Traits: Edmond s years under Faria s tutelage, has helped him increase not only his intelligence, but also his confidence. Unfortunately, this intelligence as well as an understanding of human nature, has brought Edmond a deep and abounding hatred for those who have conspired against him. His desire for vengeance is all consuming. 5

Marital Status: Engaged to be married to Mercédès until he was sent away to prison 7

Education: Although Edmond received little to no education prior to his imprisonment, Abbé Faria gave him a thorough education while at the Château d If. Due to his prodigious memory, Edmond is now fluent in five languages: Italian, modern Greek, Spanish, English and German. He is also educated in mathematics, physics, and history. 9

Occupational History: First Mate on the ship Pharaon. Due to his obsequious nature, Morrel promoted Edmond to the position of Captain, but he was never able to fulfill the resposiblity due to his arrest. 10

How does the patient occupy his/her time? Though many thought him deranged, Faria really was in possession of a list of directions to the treasure of Spada. On his deathbed, Faria gave these instructions to Edmond. Searching for the treasure and for the repugnant men who conspired against him, are the two activities that occupy Edmond s time. 12

Habits: Edmond is in the habit of distrusting others. 13

Economic Status: Since his impoverished youth, Edmond has truly come up in the world. By procuring the treasure of Spada, he has secured a position of wealth and power. 16

What is the patient s view of the world? Edmond, once described as naive and too trusting, 17

has learned to look at the world with suspicion and cynicism. 18

Specific suggestions regarding ways in which patient can improve situation: It is suggested that Edmond use his newfound wealth to seek after happiness and love instead of vengeance and suffering. Until he can learn to let go of his hatred, he will never be at peace. 20

21

February 1815 1. The Pharaon arrives back in Marseilles after the captain dies. 2. Edmond celebrates his engagement to Mercedes with family and friends at a Betrothal Feast. 3. Villefort, the head prosecutor, sends Edmond to prison for treason. 4. Edmond is sent to the Châtea d If, a terrifying prison used for important political criminals. 1821 5. After 7 years in prison, Edmond, on the brink of death, meets Abbè Faria. Edmond is filled with hope. 1829 6. After he escapes from prison, Edmond joins a smuggling ship and meets Jacopo, a true friend. 7. While on the Isle of Monte Cristo, Edmond finds the treasure of Spada. 22

23

1. Climb Out of the Depths of Despair One must turn despair into vengeance. When it looks like nothing can bring you out of the literal and figurative cell that encumbers you, you must turn your emotion into a more powerful one: Vengeance. By turning towards vengeance you are giving meaning to your previous useless life in prison. You now have a goal to attain. 24

2. Figure Out Who Wronged You This may be a tiresome step as you have most likely replayed the situation over again and again in your head. One must recount the information to new ears. A trusted friend can help you assimilate the information. A new perspective can bring clarity to a situation you may not have seen before. 25

3. Educate Yourself Knowledge is power. The only way to carry out your revenge to the highest level is to cover all your bases. You must educate yourself on the various geographies you will likely encounter, familiarize yourself with different customs, cultures and most importantly, become fluent in the necessary languages. 26

4. Devise a Plan The best thought out plans cannot be broken. Do not act on impulses or whims because this will likely get you into trouble. Be precise, well-informed, and make no mistakes. Plan to gather all the evidence you might need, then formulate an order of people you would like to take vengeance on. If the people happen to overlap, use that to your advantage and take two birds out with one stone. 27

5. Encounter a Large Sum of Money One must find a large sum of money to carry out his/ her plans. A benefactor like the great Abbe Faria is preferable because there are no strings attached to his treasure. With this money the world is your oyster. You can be whoever you want to be, you can buy houses and pledge an allegiance to whichever country your heart desires. With limitless money anything is possible. 28

29

Imprisoned, trapped, locked inside A cell and my mind Craving retribution My soul craves ease Yearning for change Yearning for change Answers found with patience Patience mocking me daily With my back turned They stabbed my naivety Lived a pure life Eyes seeking prosperity Now seeking payback They will suffer My bleeding heart Their hearts will bleed I will die alone with my love Rotting inside these four walls Zealous hatred pushing me Time, my only nemesis Death, my arms are welcoming Edmond Dantès will die here Edmond Dantès will die here Death, too easy My mind irresolute My plan infallible No one can protect them 30

31

Abbe Faria, Words cannot express my deepest gratitude for you. Your friendship has helped me find light in my darkest hour. On the verge of suicide, I felt that there was nothing left to live for. Then I heard you, the man who opened my eyes to my future. I considered you like a brother or a father, and I vow to make you proud. The letter, with the treasure location, will help me attain prosperity, which will afford me a steadfast reputation in the society outside of this cell. Everything I do, I do out of the deepest respect for you, my friend and mentor. You have given me hope in the form of a letter which will be a catalyst for my future salvation. Forever grateful, Edmond Dantes 32

33

one night Dantès awoke suddenly with the impression that someone had called him (Dumas 73). It is this night that Dantès life changes course forever. Faria, the man whom he calls father, is dying. Edmond refuses to let him go crying, Oh, my friend! My friend I saved you once and I ll save you again (Dumas 73)! He tries to save Faria, but death was too powerful an opponent. Faria dies and Edmond s heart is truly broken. Alone! He was alone again! (Dumas 77). With the light of the morning, comes Faria s last gift to his son, freedom. Edmond is inspired to take Faria s place in the burial sack. Who sent me this thought? Was it you, O God (Dumas 77)? Faria has helped Edmond find the faith that he will be safe and sound and that God is always watching over him, guiding his path. 34
