PRESIDENT- CHRIS MCGEORGE The Club is off to a great start in the New Year. It appears the members and the Directors are placing meets, and show reports are getting turned in to Todd. As we start planning our shows I hope I m able to attend as many as possible. The hatchery is in full operation, as we re shipping weekly, and my pet grooming business is in our peak season. Our incubator is full and the Langshans are growing out nicely. I have been shipping several orders this Spring-- both eggs and chicks, so there is definitely a large interest in the Langshan breed. Pictures from Tina Bergonzini This has been a rare hot New Year for us in Florida. The strawberry season has come and gone it seems. We are still averaging 88 during the day. Thankfully, its been great for the birds in the breeding pens, who are finishing out their molt nicely. With the National just months away, I m sure everyone is hatching and getting them ready for October. James and I are already planning for the Mega show that is about to take place. This will be a show you will not want to miss. Hope to see everyone there! Our 2018 National will be on the East Coast. Lets get ready and begin our planning as its never to late to plan! Tell the next newletter, best of luck at all the shows! VICE PRESIDENT- RICHARD HICKMAN Hello from New Jersey. I hope everyone is enjoying the warm Winter like we had here in the North this year. As the we enter the Springtime it s the best time of the year. It s SHOW TIME, and eggs are being collected. It s about time we start planning for our second Club National in 2018. Our 2018 National is on the East coast. I will publish a article in the Poultry Press in the next month s issue solicting bids for our National. This is when we ask that members contact your local shows, and ask them to submit their bid if they wish to host the National. Please have them contact me to submit their bid. I will collect the three highest bids and members will then have a Vote this summer to where our 2018 National will be hosted. As we all know our 2017 National is going to be NOVEMBER 3 & 4th, 2017 at the Canadian Valley Poultry Club Norman, OK. We have the judges that will be judging and in this newsletter there is a ballot. We ask that members either mail the ballot back to me, or if you have the capability please take a picture of it and send it to me on Facebook Messenger. Secterary/Treasurer- Tim Curts Welcome all members! The membership is growing and we are looking forward to an exciting year. We are in the final stages of transferring all the information from Chris to myself regarding all the memberships. We have two checking accounts that I need to combine along with savings accounts and receipts from postage. We will have a full financial report in the next newsletter. If any member has any questions, feel free to contact me or Chris. Wish everyone a wonderful Spring 2017 show season.

District 1 & District 2 Todd Sensenig It's March and hatching is going good. We are all looking for shows to go to. We know Lucasville is done for this year. My next show will be Lima, Ohio and I look at it as a 2 for 1. It's a double show. The next one after that is Delmarva in Harrington De. April 1-2. This will be my District meet, which gives out over $2000 in prize money. It's a good show to be at. Hope to see you all there. Let's see if we can have at least 100 Langshans at this show. It's time to work hard and do our best on our birds. Get them show-ready and lets show everybody what a good bird is. If you have any questions on breeding or raising Langshans feel free to call me. I am willing to help anyone. Todd Sensenig Bantam Black Langshan Pullet Todd Sensenig Junior Member Cara Taylor Florida District 3 Camille Lewandowski Hello-- I hope everyone is having a great Spring! We have several meets placed for our District. Please see the list in the newsletter. I would like to encourage everyone to take a look at our new website-- www.thelangshanclub.com, I am always looking for new pictures and information for our website. Please feel free to send me anything you have (cml5640@gmail.com). I look forward to meeting everyone at our upcoming meets. District 4 Dustin Drake Hello from Ohio! We are off to a busy Spring season in our district with several shows just around the corner. I have a list of meets attached in the news letter for the shows so far. Please contact me with any meets that you would like placed in our district. It was sad to hear that Lucasville, Ohio will not be having a show this Spring. It was always a show where members of all breeds came together and had a great time. As they say when one door closes a new one opens. We have a new poultry club here in Ohio, and a NEW Double Show. Moon City Poultry Club May 13-14 will be hosting the Ohio state meet, along with a special meet in it s second show. The Dayton Fancy Feather Club in Greenville, Ohio will be hosting our East Cost Regional Meet this Spring April 29-30.

District 5 Richard Peters Hello everyone. We are planning a great National Langshan Show this November 4th in Norman, OK and hopefully will have a huge Langshan show. We have several other National meets that have been placed to join us to include Jersey Giant National, Rhode Island Red National, Marans National, plus a Plymouth Rock Extravaganza. We have over $12,000 in Cash and Awards that will be given out to Champions. This looks like our final list of judges for the Nov. 4th show in Norman, OK. To date we have secured the following: 1) Ron (Tater) Britt - NC (ABA), 2) Rip Stalvey - FL (APA-ABA), 3) Tom Kane - VA (APA-ABA), 4) Doug Connelly - TX (ABA), 5) Tracy Hill - TX (APA-ABA), 6) Diana Rieber Dahir - IA (APA), 7) Art Reiber - IA (APA-ABA), 8) Jeff Halbach - WI (ABA-APA), 9) Don Nelson - RI (APA-ABA) (pending). I think classes and seminars will begin at 2:00 pm on Friday, Nov. 3rd. We are planning to check birds in on Friday, Nov 3rd at 12:00 noon for birds which have been tested and have submitted their health papers with their entries. Thank you! Meet Junior Member of the Quarter Lane Atchley Age 13 From Tennessee I went to my first poultry show December of 2014. The Tennessee Valley poultry club was hosting a ABA national that year. I entered a Rhode Island Red cockerel. I got out of my 4-H chick chain birds which was supposed to be all pullets. It wasn t show-quality but ended up placing 4th. I said, Mom, I m going to go look at every bird in this building and see what I like and I m going to start doing this show business. Out of all the thousands of birds in the building the Langshan was my pick. A lady named Cindy Rasmussen told me after the show was over she would give me my first Langshan-- and she did. I felt like I was the happiest kid ever. Wasn t long after that in the Spring of 2015 I met a guy named Eddie Dunlap aka Cotton at a Spring youth day where I got my 1st pair of show quality Langshans. I showed them that Spring and won my very first poultry show. I was hooked from that day forward. Eddie and I are now inseparable and we attend every show together. I have made it my number one goal to carry on Mr. Dunlap s legacy in Langshans. I have won the state fair. This past year I even had the chance to attend the Ohio National in 2016 and I won with my Budapest pigeon. I have won at several out of state shows but my goal was finally reached in December of 2016 when I finally won the Dixie Classic with my Black Langshan pullet. I was on cloud 9. I ve wanted to do that since the very beginning. I also have a passion for showing pigeons and serve as the pigeon director for the Tennessee Valley Poultry Club. I m very active in my local 4-H with poultry. I m a member of my church and often visit the local nursing homes and bring my chickens to share. I have a great passion for the Langshan and I think I will go a very long way representing the breed.

Meet Member of the Quarter Michelle Klales Hey Everyone. My name is Michelle Klales and I am fairly new to poultry only having had birds about 5 years. My very first birds were a pet-quality pair of black-tailed Buff Jap bantams. I wanted more birds, but was unsure exactly what I wanted. I saw somewhere that Mikaela Rodriguez had some pet-quality LF pullets that she was selling as egg layers. I brought them home and was instantly hooked on the breed. I was fortunate that, at that time, she was in Pennsylvania only a few hours from me. She is the reason I got started and hooked on exhibition Langshans. These majestic, gorgeous birds had me hooked from the get go. She got me started with exhibition quality birds at that point. Generally speaking, I have blacks and blues in LF and bantam as well. I have never had any whites. My first starred win was with a bantam blue cockerel getting me Reserve Feather-Leg under Judge Glenn See. I am very active in my local poultry club, Lebanon Valley Poultry Fanciers, and make an effort to get to as many shows as possible for me each year. Over the years I have added a bird here and there from other people including Camille. I have recently gotten a few birds from Wil Hanley as well. I enjoy speaking to other Langshan breeders and admiring their birds. Please introduce yourself at shows if we have not met. Another breed that I am active in exhibiting is the KO Shamo. If I am not hanging in a Langshan aisle at a show, you'll find me near the KOs for sure! Upcoming shows for me include: Cape Fear, NC...Delmarva in DE...Sussex in NJ, etc. Thanks for reading my story and good luck at shows this year!

Breeding for the Blue Color Here's an article written last fall by Tom Kernan, regarding how he's gotten great lacing on his blue sumatras. This article appeared in the Fall, 2010 Newsletter of the American Sumatra Association. Breeding Blue Sumatras Tom Kernan This article is about how I obtained very good lacing on my sumatras. I had a number of people ask me, so here is what I did. This took me three years to get. My start with blue large fowl came from Basil Smith, from Pennsylania. He had the best blues I saw anywhere. At the Bloomsburg, PA auction in the 1990 s he had the best blue cock with the best color I ve ever seen so I bought this bird with several blue hens. These birds didn t have too much lacing so I tried a few different ways to achieve this. The way that worked best on the sumatras is listed below. Remember to toe punch to keep the pen that the birds came from in order. It took me three years to get the best laced blues with little smut in the plumage with no brassy lacing. The first year, use a black cock on splash hens. This will give you 100% blue chicks. The second year, use blues with the least amount of smut and no brassy color to them. This will produce chicks that are 25% splash, 25% black, and 50% blue. The blue chicks will have less smut in them compared to their parents. The third year, use the black cocks and the lightest laced females with no brassy plumage. You should end up with excellent lacing from these matings. After this year, you can continue with blue on blue matings. And, you can always repeat what I did in year 3. When using splash birds to get 100% blue chicks, a number of them will have black smut in their plumage. I tend to like blues which have heavier lacing like a sebright; this really makes them pop in the show hall. Save birds that are slightly darker when they are young. The blue color tends to get lighter with age, so several of my best show birds are a few years old. If you start with blue birds with good lacing you can skip year 1 of my program and after a few years of mating blue on blue, try doing what I did in year 3 to get the lacing darker if need be. The next breed I will be trying this program is with the Blue Ameraucana large fowl. If anybody has any questions or needs help with their breeding program, feel free to contact me.
