THOMAS ROGERS SOCIETY, INC Established 1974 Website: www.thomasrogerssociety.com NEWSLETTER SPRING 2012 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE: As one of her last official acts as President of the Thomas Rogers Society, Mary Brown organized and hosted the Triennial meeting at Plimoth Plantation on September 10, 2011. It was a fun, enjoyable event that allowed us to interact with our distant cousins. The pictures you see are from this meeting and among them are several showing the actor who portrayed Stephen Hopkins, who regaled us with his rendition of this very colorful character s personality. Hopkins was recruited by the Merchant Adventurers to provide governance for the colony and was one of forty-one signatories of the Mayflower Compact. He survived some very interesting life-threatening situations related to his involvement with the Virginia Colony and his life story is well worth the read. VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT: We are pleased to report that three scholarships were awarded this year to: (1) Sarah E. Hinzman of Cedar Rapids IA; (2) Abigail S. Mirick, Arlington, VA; and; (3) Nicole A. Robbins of 1

Carver, MA. We congratulate and thank those who expressed their appreciation in letters and email. To those who applied and were not awarded scholarships, we encourage you to please remember to apply again next year. Thomas Rogers Society descendant students should also be aware that the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) sponsors one $5,000 annual scholarship each year to assist deserving direct descendants of GSMD members in acquiring a higher education, with a view to their becoming better prepared for life and citizenship. The deadline for applying is April each year. Application instructions are found in a PDF file that may be downloaded from this site address: http://www.themayflowersociety.com/images/pdf/scholarship- Application-Instructions.pdf SECRETARY S REPORT: We are pleased to welcome four (4) new members to our society family: (1) Colette Louise Atkins Reagan, (2) Marguerite Loveland Verani, (3) Charles Dixon Robbins, and (4) Life Member: Teresa Ann Boice. More pictures from the Triennial meeting all courtesy of TRS member Barry Gougeon. Thanks Barry! TREASURER S REPORT: The Thomas Rogers accounts are in good order. We have still 30 members who have not paid their dues. A second notice is being prepared. We have $23,086 in our scholarship endowment fund and are able, with the annual donations from our members and the Konov trust donation, to provide three scholarships of $750 each. The life membership endowment fund is recovering from the economic downturn and is currently $19,385. There is a $5000 certificate of deposit which also contains life membership funds. Operating funds balance is $4110. This includes the money for the three scholarships, newsletter printing and mailing, and 6 th &7 th generation funds. Members who have made contributions this quarter are: Penny Bonoma, Mary Brown, Nancy 2

A. Caldarone, Thomas R. Fick, and Michael Yoemans. Thank you to all for your generosity to Thomas Rogers Society! GENEALOGIST S REPORT: Database Project Along with his important genealogy work to qualify new members, Tracy Crocker continues to update and add the new members to our on-line database and the website. This is a long term project that is greatly enabled through our 6 th and 7 th Generation Fund donations. This is one of the lasting legacies of the Thomas Rogers Society and is basically the only site like it when it comes to a Mayflower descendant electronic database that is available to the public on-line. It is a big help in attracting new members. We hope that our members will continue to give to this very worthwhile project. For you new member and for existing members who may not remember, the 6 th and 7 th Generation is a continuation of the lineage that was originally published in the Mayflower Families: Through Five Generations (Volume 19- Thomas Rogers). The 6 th and 7 th Generation is available material compiled to date is available on our web site or in CD-ROM for purchase price of $30.00. If you are interested in the CD-ROM, please contact Tracy Crocker (see below for his contact information). The answers to the 10 True/ False questions- They are all true 1. They were not generally known as Pilgrims until after 1793 when that term was used to describe them at a Forefathers Day celebration in Plymouth. 2. Passenger, Stephen Hopkins lived in Virginia from 1609 to 1611 after being shipwrecked on Bermuda where he spent 44 weeks before sailing on to Virginia. 3. Around 1617 some of the Pilgrims briefly considered going to Guiana, South English explorers, led by Sir Walter Raleigh, had a disastrous experience there in 1619, they were united in their desire to come to America. 4. The first claim that they landed on Plymouth Rock was made by 95 year old John Faunce in 1741. However, none of the accounts written by several members of Plymouth Colony indicate where they landed or that they landed on a rock. 5. Squanto was twice kidnapped by English fishermen or explorers and lived for nearly ten years in the suburbs of London and in a monastery in Spain. by: William P.
