Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California Minutes of the General Meeting January 13, 2018 Location: The Round Table Pizza on Mission Boulevard in Livermore. The meeting was called to order by President Johanna Primeaux at 1:42 pm. The following members were present: The following members were present: Barbara Norton Bret Buckler Abbey Buckler LeAnn Buckler Marianne Dub Nancy Rynewicz Mary Metz Lynn Azzopardi Diane Boross Julie Guttman John Strassner The following board members were present: Rebecca Logsdon Patsi Nelson Halina Christie Kathy Rosdail Trudy Kerr Scott Zamvil Anita Rasmussen Johanna Primeaux Kathy Coon We had the following guests: Bonny Edwards Wayne Robinson (Johanna s puppy buyer) Minutes: Approved President s Report: We had a fabulous and very productive Board Meeting last month at the Black Bear Diner in Milpitas. We worked out the schedule for the year, including all the meetings. Johanna and Halina will work out an agenda for each monthly meeting so we know what to do and when to do it. We will continue to have periodic Board Meetings. Correspondence: No report. Treasurer: Kathy made the deposit for the 2018 Christmas Party to Cattlemen s. We made a lot of money at the raffle at the 2017 Christmas Party. 2018 dues are now due (the notice appears in the Bulletin). We made a profit in 2018. We bought a Keurig coffee pot to replace the older pot. Kathy brought the books to the meeting in case anyone wanted to see them.

Membership: Patsi has taken over as Membership Chair from Anita. The Club thanked Barbara Norton for her fantastic work on the Lifetime Member pins. They turned out great. Patsi asked about sending out the roster spreadsheet to the membership. Kathy R. has the updated member information. The official roster list comes out in July, after the deadline for dues payment has passed. Johanna asked if board members can be identified on the roster. Maybe this information can be put on a separate sheet? We don t post the membership roster on the website due to groups like PETA. Bulletin: As always, Rebecca needs content for the Bulletin! Here are some suggestions: A tribute to a special dog or person (living or dead) Hacks and how-to s Recommendations Post a historic photo of a person and/or dog and ask the members to guess who it is (answer posted on last page). Photos of dog show fashion from the past. Members really liked the Guess the dog/person and fashion show ideas. Breeder Referral: Kathy C. said that Breeder Referral is a dead issue at the moment. People aren t posting. At the Board Meeting, we discussed making posts on Breeder Referral free. Kathy made a motion: Breeder Referral advertisements are free to members in good standing unless you add a photo (for $5 per photo). Ads will be listed for 30 days. The motion was seconded and approved by the membership. Johanna suggested a form for the ads: e.g., name and/or kennel name, general location, date of birth, etc. February 2018 Specialty: The Specialty takes place Friday, February 16, 2018 in the Pavilion at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose. Kathy R. will be the chair. Johanna will be assisting. Everything is on schedule. The Premium is on the website. Halina brought extra copies to the meeting. The entry deadline is January 31 st. If you are attending the Golden Gate KC show, you can hand your entries to Halina there. The reservations have been made for the judges. Tom True will pick up the obedience equipment and bring it back. We will need someone to handle catalog sales while Halina is picking up the judge. LeAnn volunteered. Kathy R. has a recommendation for ring steward and will contact them. Obedience stewards will include Marianne, Nancy, and Rebecca. We will also contact Ellen Fletcher. The Judges Dinner will be at Applebee s, starting about 6 pm. Mary Metz volunteered to be in charge of the potluck. Please let Mary know what you want to bring. Diane Boross will do the raffle. We will set up on Thursday (moving tables around, etc.), starting about 11:30 am. We need volunteers to help.

Agility Trial: The next agility trial takes place June 29 to July 1in Prunedale, in conjunction with the trial put on by USDAA. Our combo trial with the USDAA last year was a huge success (financially successful, too). This year we will probably have two judges. Trophies: We need sponsors for the February Specialty trophies. It helps cut down on our costs. If you sponsor a trophy, your name will appear in the catalog. The trophy list was circulated at the meeting. Cindy Frusetta is having a difficult time finding decent trophies in the price range currently set for trophies. She suggests raising the price for all trophies. Motion by Kathy R: That we raise the sponsoring fee by $5 per award except for Juniors ($35), High Combined Obedience ($40 cash) and the Obedience Special Awards ($20 each, cash). Motion seconded and approved by the membership. Marianne asked about unused trophies. Halina said that we usually use them at the Puppy match. Anita asked Cindy Frusetta to contact her if she has a lot of leftover trophies. Ribbons: We will be giving out an Award of Merit at the February Specialty. Website: Diane said that she sent photos of the 2017 Holiday Party to Alicia for posting on the website. Education: John Strassner will do an AKC scent work demo at the June 16 th Puppy Picnic. Johanna passed around a puppy buyer contract that she got from an attorney friend who breeds dachshunds. It is very good and quite comprehensive. Johanna also said that the AKC sells really good AKC Registration kits that you can give to your puppy buyers. Library: Halina said that no one has looked at the library in a while. The library is a terrific resource. For example, the older Sheltie magazines are a great way to study breed history and to see how it has changed. If you want anything from the library, let Halina know. The Club website has the list of library holdings. Ways and Means: Diane brought a door price for the meeting a cute bag. LeAnn won. We need raffle baskets for the February Specialty. 2018 Match: Anita is the Match chair. Patsi is the Obedience/Rally Workshop chair. Patsi said that Harriet Tucker, who was our judge in 2017, will probably be our judge this year as well (she was great). The Match will take place at Niles. Lynn Azzopardi volunteered to collect the payments for the raffle and handle the tickets. We need judges for conformation and sweeps. We will vote for judges at the February meeting. Hospitality: Position currently vacant. We need a volunteer. Special Awards: Lynn and Johanna said that they have 4 plaques that need to be redone plus 2 additional conformation champion plaques 6 plaques total. They have not received confirmation from Larry yet.

October 2018 Specialty: There are going to be new classes in Rally. We will need to add the new classes to the awards list. The changes to Rally and to Obedience means that Halina will need to get new judges books. We need an assistant for show chair. Old Business: No report. New Business: New Volunteers for Club Offices and Positions: Halina said that one of the things discussed at the Board Meeting is some people have been doing the same jobs for many years and we have taken it for granted that they are always going to be there or that they will always want to do those jobs. We need more people to learn how to do these things. We are putting together a list of the tasks for each position. Puppy Picnic: Anita said that it will take place at Niles on June 16 th. Rally Signs: Patsi said that new Rally signs need to be ordered. Kathy R. made a motion: That Patsi order new Rally signs for the Club. The motion was seconded and approved by the membership. Obedience Changes: Bonnie Edwards reported on the major changes in Novice and Open Obedience sits and downs that go into effect on May 1st. o Barbara Norton has been campaigning for changes to the sits and downs exercise for over 10 years. The exercise can be dangerous especially in Open, where the owner is out of sight of the dog. o The AKC changed the exercise so that Open dogs are no longer doing long, out of sight sits and downs, and Novice dogs are no longer doing long sits and downs across the ring from their handler. o AKC surveys have indicated that over 60% of competitors are in favor of the change. However, the minority that are not in favor (less than 20%) are extremely vocal they want to keep things the way they are. o Bonnie encourages everyone who likes the changes to contact the AKC and let them know. Right now, they are being flooded with angry letters. o Kathy R. suggested an article about the new Obedience rules be put in the Bulletin. o Kathy C. made a motion: That as a club we send a letter to the AKC Board thanking them for making a safer environment to show our dogs. The motion was seconded and approved by the membership. o The members thanked Barbara for pursuing this issue. Website Links: Kathy R. said that the annual fee for a website link on the SSCNC website is now due. Please send payment to Anita. IT Person: We need an IT person to help with all the Clubs needs. Discussion tabled until February. Good of the Order: Yvonne Samuelson wants everyone to be aware that canine flu is now in California. Karen D Augusta announced her Member of the Year award at her class at Happiness Kennels. She was very excited about the honor. Next Meeting: February 17 th after Sheltie judging at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose (the day after the Specialty).
