Fall 2012 Volume XXXIII, Issue 3 TÅxÜtâvtÇt UâÄÄxà Ç Connie Jean Ribbeck President Michael J. Muenks Secretary/Treasurer Jerry De Smidt Director - North Central Harold Knapp Director Northeast Paul Smith Director South Central Tina Dinkins Director Southeast Christina Korfus Director West Don Cable Honorary Vice President Mike Gilbert Honorary Vice President Scott McDonough Webmaster Susie Winder & John Blehm ABC Forum Administrators Breeders Club, 33878 Hwy 87, California, MO 65023-3911 www.ameraucana.org President s Report, Connie Jean Ribbeck It s been pretty hot in the Pacific Northwest, but we are not in any drought conditions and my flock has tolerated the heat with few losses. It looks as though we should be cooling back down in a week of two to normal late summer weather. Before long it will be fall show season again! I have concentrated on replacing my black and blue stock this year as most of my hens are four to five years old. There are many black and blue birds sweltering in the grow out area. I see several promising wheaten pullets this year thanks to changing the cock bird in the pen. My white flock has virtually disappeared as I bred my hens and pullets to a blue cockerel late this winter. I am pleased to say that I have bred out the barring gene from my white flock. None of the offspring from the above cross are barred! The visual white flocks will be back next spring. My first large fowl chocolate project birds have started to lay and it is time to get the next generation on the ground. The large fowl look like they will take much longer to develop than the bantams. Along with downsizing my flock, I have decided to try whole grains for my feed rations. I have found a local farmer that can supply me with what I need at about $200.00 less per ton than buying wholesale at the local brand name plant. This will be a learning curve for me as I want to make sure I am supplying adequate vitamins and minerals to the flock. Several people have mentioned on the Forum that they are starting project colors or improvements to the current varieties we have. Keep up the work and please continue to share as your progress or lack of may help others with their endeavors. Features this Issue: Page 2 District Reports Page 5 Elections Page 5 Meets Page 9 Meet Reports I would like to welcome our interim Western District Director Christina Korfus to the Board. She has been appointed to the position until the end of the year and elections are complete. Plans for several meets are in the works for the Western District and details of the National Meet for 2013 are being finalized.

Bulletin Page 2 of 9 North Central District, Jerry De Smidt, Director I have decided not to run for re-election for the board of directors, with my new job I just do not have the time to commit to being your representative for the North Central region. Jake ends up doing all the chores and that is not fair to him. We will be going to the National show in MO and look forward to seeing all of you at the show. I have talked to several breeders from the district that plan on going and I hope that it is a great show as it was the last time. We have had a very hot and dry summer this year and I hope that everyone survived better than some of our birds which did not feather very well. We did not hatch out as many chicks this year so we do not have very many birds in each variety. Western District, Christina Korfus, Director Hi Breeders Club! Larry Clionsky Black, Blue, Blue, Wheaten, Wheaten, White and Buff Large Fowl Hatching Eggs and Day-Old Chicks Larry Clionsky 9 Zion Church Rd Grantville, PA 17028-9651 (717)469-7509 Lclionsky@yahoo.com My name is Christina Korfus of Korfus Kluckers. I have raised off and on for several years. I started with the blacks. A few years back, I acquired some brown red LF from Mike Gilbert, as well as some brown red bantams from Mike Gilbert and Bob Walcheck. I have raised poultry since I was a little girl growing up on a 10 acre farm. I started my endeavor with exhibition birds when moving over to Cle Elum, WA. I scoured the Internet looking for a docile breed of chicken for eggs. I came across a few websites talking about show birds. I thought really, they show chickens." I have been hooked ever since. Besides, I raise large fowl and bantam Orpingtons. I regularly am an exhibitor at the pacific northwest shows. I have enjoyed going to a few shows back east. I live on a 7 acre farm located just outside of Cle Elum, WA with my husband Tom and my son Wyatt. I am a nurse. In the past I worked hours upon hours, but right now I am currently not working. I am excited to be appointed to the Western District position. If you have any questions or want to place a meet please email me at korfuskluckers@aol.com or call 509-607-0405. We are working on confirming the National for 2013 in Farmington Utah. Below are state meets placed so far: * PNPA Winter Classic DOUBLE Show- Oregon state fairgrounds October 13 th & 14 th 2012 Kevin Haywood k.haywood.jr@gmail.com * Washington Feather Fancier s Winter Brisk (Chehalis, WA) November 17 & 18th Anne Maloch damhorses@yahoo.com * Pacific Poultry Breeders Assn 66 th Annual Winter Show January 26 & 27, 2013 Anthony Rose, arose@valleyalphaelectric.com

Page 3 of 9 Bulletin South Central District, Paul Smith, Director Greetings from the South-Central District Plans are being finalized for another great National Meet! Areatha Mahan has agreed to paint plates for all nine of the best of varieties in both bantam and large fowl. Reserve varieties will receive a ribbon from the ABC. The Missouri State Poultry Club agreed to supply trophies and cash awards to the champion and reserve champion. Ribbons have been used for the best hen and pullet eggs in both bantam and large fowl in the past. The heat wave that has been nationwide this year, may have a huge effect on the condition of older birds, eliminating any possibility of displays, but we still need to be prepared for awards for them. They don t accept trios at this show. Cash awards will also be used. Anyone who wants to donate towards the national needs to send them to Michael Muenks. Bernita Miller, show secretary says the show catalogs will be ready by the time this is published. We will have a corner of the large building for a place to have our annual business meeting and hold an educational seminar. Hope everyone who shows, will participate on Oct. 27, at the Sedalia, Missouri State Fair Grounds. Seven years ago (2005) the ABC drew a lot of attention to our great breed by having almost 200 head of at Sedalia! It was a total different poultry club, which has disbanded that hosted our national at that time. This is a double judged show with the first judging being our national and the second judging being the Missouri State meet. Looking forward to a great time! Our South-Central District meet will be the following Saturday-November 3, 2012 at the Heart of the Ozarks Poultry Association Show in Fayetteville, Arkansas. This is also a double judged show with the first judging being our district and the second judging being our Arkansas State meet. Another great time to be experienced! The Oklahoma State Poultry Federation Show in Shawnee, OK. is under new show management and should be back with a great show on Dec. 8 and 9, 2012. This is our Oklahoma State Meet. The Texas State Meet will be at the Ft. Worth Livestock Show January 26 & 27. Unfortunately the Texas Animal Health Commission has forced restrictive regulations on the poultry clubs which cause them to have a state show only-no out of state birds. The Bluebonnet Classic at College Station, Texas will be a special meet on January 5, 2013. Any South-Central District member, desiring an meet at a show they plan on attending, needs to contact me, so it can get booked. Remember they must be booked far enough ahead of the show, that it can be published in the ABC newsletter. The birds have been growing and developing well even though it s been over 100º more than 20 days this summer, with many of them 105º or more. Unfortunately for everyone, the heat wave in the corn belt has feed prices soaring. I hate to see how high feed gets before Oct. 2013, when the new corn crop comes in. Oh well! It s only a hobby anyway. Order now for limited hatches in March, April & May 2013. For an Order Form & details Go to ChickHatchery.com Or send a 1st class stamp to: John W Blehm 4599 Lange Road Birch Run MI 48415-8137 We are now accepting orders for our 2013 hatched day old chicks. We sent out 980 in 51 boxes and sold 111 here at our farm in 2012. Didn t add any states to the 40 that we have sent

Bulletin Page 4 of 9 South Central District, continued..., but did add five more to the list for our Rhode Island Reds-bringing them up to 10 states, now. We are planning on supplying potential show quality day old chicks hatched from Feb. 19 through May 28, 2013 at two week intervals (8 hatches). They have been few in number until mid-march in the past. For prices and more info contact me. Southeast District, Tina Dinkins, Director There is not much happening here. I am trying to get a few meetings placed. The TVA & I Fair will be in September and it is our big regional fair. My son and I will place some birds in the competition there. We have a bantam black to put in plus some bantam Salmon Faverolles and some Rhode Island Reds. Keep your fingers crossed for us! Also, I will be stepping down from being the southeast district director when it is time for re-election. I wanted to let you all know in case any of you are interested in this position. I have one person I will be recommending if she will accept. Please keep this position in mind and let any of us on the board know if you are interested. Hope everyone has a great autumn!! Northeast District, Harold Knapp, Director Things have been unsettle for me this summer and I will not be running for the position of district director. The ABC district meet I placed at Southern Ohio Poultry Association is not listed in their show catalog. I e-mailed David Adkins (he accepted meet March 7, '12 ) to try to find out what is going on.
