CREATIVE WRITING Washburn Elementary May 2014 Summer Vacation Jackson I can already taste the maple syrup! If you haven t guessed, I m going to Canada! Actually, a boat ride to Canada. This trip is estimated 2 days to get there. The only thing I am not looking forward to is seagulls. Oh how I love the seagulls! Stealing my food, honking as cars/boats come near them! I m really starting to get hungry for fish. I m ready to go fishing in Canada. Also, I am thirsty for Tim Hortons, the best coffee shop ever! I also hope that we will get a cottage like our last one. Our last one we had a goldfish pond! And a lake right next to it! I ve already packed! I m ready ready for Canada!!! Summer Vacation (continued) Abduljabbar AHHHHHHHHHH!!! That is a sound I kind of want to hear! Because, first it is annoying. Second, it s the sound of people on roller coasters. And, in the summer, it s one of my favorite days!! So we might go to Skyzone, Valley Fair, or Nickelodeon Universe. It is going to be amazing. And I am going to play a lot of basketball. I need to practice my three point shot and to be better at football, I need to throw better. And in soccer I need to work on dribbling a soccer ball and a basketball. And I need to catch up on my video games. A lot of fun awaits this summer!!! So I want to meet Kevin Durant this summer, so that s the end!

Creative Writing Page 2 Specia Summer Vacation (continued) Lily Whoosh! Wow, that was a big wave! My family is going to the beach at Texas to see big or huge waves and visit my cousins in Texas and we re going to have major shopping! Whoops, forgot something I m going to go in a plane ride. It s going to be a bumpy ride to Texas! My family is also going to the best state! California! We re going there in another plane ride. It s going to be a dizzy ride! We re also going to have even more major shopping. I might even fall down a cliff! I m even visiting more cool cousins. I like my California cousins because they have swimming pools and they have a big house! Summer Vacation (continued) Brianna Just me and the goalie. I step back and wind up she looks nervous on her toes, hands are out, knees are bent SWOOSH! It s a goal!!!! That s right, this summer I m going GAME MODE! The thought of playing soccer all summer long just gives me the chills! Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach, and don t forget Hope Solo, will all be sprinting in my mind. Creative Writing Page 4 Letters Dear Schools, Isabelle Isabelle (continued) The school bell rings. It is time to start a fun day at school, but for some kids they are not having fun but being made fun of. According to NASP (an association of school psychologists) 90% of 4 th through 8 th graders are bullied. Wow!!! That is a lot of kids. I feel very sad when I hear that someone is being bullied and I bet that the kids being bullied and the bully feel sad or depressed. Kids usually bully because they are feeling down in the dumps. It is your job to help those kids and you are not doing a very good job. Over 67% of students believe that schools don t respond well with bullying. That is something that needs to be fixed. Schools managed to make longer school days but they can t fix a problem that has been going on for a very long time and is very big. When kids are bullied it makes them not like school and they don t want to learn. A kid being bullied in 1 st grade can affect his whole life. Studies show that 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying. If he does not go to school then he can t learn and if he can t learn then he can t get a degree or go to college. School is supposed to be a safe place where kids have fun and learn. With bullying, they can t do both. NASP also states that 1 out of 4 teachers don t mind bullying. That means about 25 kids will get bullied and their teacher won t do anything about it. 25 kids!! Just being pushed around and they can t depend on their teacher to help them. NASP says that those teachers that don t care will only stop bullying 4% of the time. That is not good. And, those people that think bullying is not a problem are pretty much saying, Go ahead, beat someone up. It won t hurt them so go ahead. Well, guess what, you were once a kid in school. You have probably seen bullying happen. You know that it really crushes kids hearts. If you have seen it and know what it does, then why aren t you doing something about it? I say that all schools should have suspension punishments when someone bullies someone. There should be a class where kids learn about how a bully hurts kids. There should be programs for kids who are bullied to help them feel better. Go to camps that teach kids about bullying and how they can stop it. Dedicate one wall and put sticky notes with kind words on them so kids can take them and read it to make them feel better. We can all make a change to this big problem. It starts with one school to change. Be that school. Help the kids. If you were a kid, wouldn t that be what you would want? Isabelle

Creative Writing Page 5 Dear Pet Owners, Rachel Animal abuse is a huge problem and it is not being taken as seriously as it should. Hundreds of animals are still being abused today and not many people are doing anything about it. Even though people can get arrested for animal abuse, so many people still do it and get away with it. Many animals are getting turned down at animal shelters by future pet owners because of their past and have to be euthanized because of their bad behavior or because there is not enough room. And some people might say, Oh, it s not a big deal, its one animal. Uh no, actually it s hundreds of animals all over the world, so check your facts. Let s talk about the American Pit Bull Terrier. Pit Bulls are the most abused animal. Dog fighting has been around for years. But people still do it. Dog fighting is where you put your dog (many people use Pit Bulls) in a ring with another animal and they fight. Dog fighting is illegal in ALL states. Tia Maria Torres is the owner of Villalobos rescue center for Pit Bulls and she also stars in the show Pit Bulls and Parolees. Tia has been rescuing Pit Bulls for years. She has over 200 Pit Bulls in her shelter, she helps adopt them out and give them the training they need to find a good home. Let s try be more like Tia, let s help the animals, not hurt them. Rachel (continued) Hundreds of animals are being beaten, starved and even killed. Did you know that in 2007 researchers reported that 64.5% of animal cruelty involved dogs, 18% involved cats and 25% involved other animals? Researchers also reported that animals are killed for food, knocked down by cars, and even poisoned. When you see a former abused animal next time you go to a shelter and their expression is I don t care, that means there is just a little puppy or kitten inside of them that just wanted somebody to love them. And deep down inside, they forgive us. Think about that. They are so desperate for a home they are willing to forgive the people who caused the problem in the first place. No, some of them aren t even desperate for a home. They just want to forgive us. Don t blame the poor innocent animals for what we do to them. When will they finally blame the humans? Over 500 animals die EACH DAY and over 300,000 die EACH YEAR due to animal cruelty. Let s all work together to stop animal cruelty and make the world a better place for all animals one day at a time. Rachel

Creative Writing Page 6 Dear Mr. Wilkins, Becca I think Washburn Elementary doesn t have enough toys and equipment at recess. There is not enough jump ropes at recess and sometimes families don t have money to buy toys and equipment. Also, sometimes kids might not like the toys and equipment. I took a survey at recess and 2/4 kids said we need more jump ropes and basketballs. Also some families don t have money left over from paying for food, clothing and shelter. Trinity said I think we should have volleyballs, hula hoops and more basketballs. People should care about this issue because at recess kids should have fun and they shouldn t feel left out. I support this position because a lot of students think we need more stuff to play with at recess. I can argue that we don t have enough equipment or toys at recess because sometimes when there is not enough of something, I feel left out. Dear Mrs. Elsen: Anas I ve noticed no Bloomington Public Schools have any sports teams. I suggest we have sports teams. Here are three reasons why we should have sports teams. First, sports helps you have less risk of some diseases. Second, sports get people to use energy and helps the blood flow. Finally, sports helps you build your teamwork skills. Thank you for your attention and support. Now start sports teams so kids can have fun playing whatever sport they like. Anas I think a good solution to this problem is that we should have sports equipment donations. Becca

Creative Writing Page 7 Dear Mr. Wilkins, Emily I have noticed a problem around the world and I m probably not the only one that has. We have a problem with world hunger. I feel if we want to do anything about it, people need to start doing organizations like feed my starving children and here is why. For one thing, hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis COMBINED! I mean, honestly, if it is that dangerous more people should know about it, am I right? Then more people would donate money and give time to organizations that help this problem. Secondly, 783 million people don t have access to clean water. That is gross and dangerous because they could get diseases that could kill them. Think about it that s more people that live in the U.S. Every year we do VEAP right? But not everyone contributes which is bad. Here is the reason we should do something about it. Poor nutrition causes near half (45%) of deaths in children under the age of Emily (continued) five!! 3.1 million children each year, that s crazy! If those kids won t convince you, than I don t know what will. Because that s more kids then there is in this school by a long shot. So, let s join together to fight this problem! Emily Matthew Dear All Kids That Don t Play Sports, If you don t play a sport now, you should start playing one. My three reasons should tell you why you should. You should start playing a sport now because if you don t you might not be fit when you get older. And you won t get the chance to work with a team and you might not get good teamwork skills for a job or other activities when you are older. You could find friends on your team or group and when you do you will get the chance to try new things. Thank you for reading this and I hope you get into a sport. Matthew
