COURTNEY WEST CERTIFICATE IV IN VETERINARY NURSING Courtney West s positive, determined attitude is bringing her career success in her chosen profession of veterinary nursing. She said, In 2014, a veterinary nurse traineeship was advertised at the Wyndham Veterinary Clinic. At the very first stage of the interview process, the clinic management advised that over 3,000 people had applied for this position. After 12 months of relentless effort, desperately trying to gain entry to the industry, receiving multiple rejections, unanswered applications, and completing any training I could in relation to the industry, I somehow beat all odds all 3,000 of them and was offered the position. Courtney s career has progressed substantially in the short time since then and she has worked on a wide range of animals with various conditions. She said, I ve been able to work in all the clinic s different departments, including surgical nursing, consult nursing, hospital nursing and emergency nursing. Nearing the completion of my Certificate IV, I was one of two staff members selected to train to work in the clinic s specialist reproductive department. Not all staff get the opportunity to learn these skills. Courtney is now a senior veterinary nurse at the clinic and is taking a lead role in reproductive services. She also spends time with animals outside of work acting as a foster carer for Paws and Tails Rehoming, a local cat rescue group. A recent foster project was a nine month old, heavily pregnant kitten that went on to give birth to six kittens. As I m sure you can imagine, taking care of seven kittens is quite a bit of work, but it is something I enjoy very much. /6 Animal Studies 2018
