Steers to 1395 Heifers to 1090 Plenty of demand once again for all types of stores with our second autumn show and sale of continental steers and heifers seeing several top drawer cattle on offer. Top price of the day came from a couple of tremendous South Devon steers (27m) from the Tooze family of Paignton which sold for 1395 apiece, others out of the same lorry ran to 1275 for a trio of grand Blue steers (26m). Well bred and fed Limousin cross steers (17m) of the very highest quality from Barry Quant of Newton Abbot rose to 1340 and 1280 for pens of three and scooped both first and second in the show steer classes. Yet more top quality stores from David & Wendy Holland, Dolton saw classy home bred Charolais steers (17m) sell to 1295 (x3) followed by a single Charolais heifer with the same comments to 1075 and four show first prize winning heifers rising to 1025. Limousin steers (19m) saw 1245 for Messrs Hawkins of Thorverton and 1215 for Keith and Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey (23m), the latter also selling a pair of shapely Blue bullocks (25m) for 1200 (as did David & Wendy Holland) (17m). A lovely run of twenty young South Devon steers (16m) from Dave & Karen Smith topped at 1165 (x2) with other later born sorts from the Mildon family of Cadbury to 1170 for two Limousin steers (15m). Holstein Friesian steers (27m) sold to 920 for a stand out pen of five from Tom & Sarah Fry of Ottery st Mary. In the absence of any of those big forward type heifers they did still top a an impressive 1090 for a smart Charolais (25m) from Tom Forward of Bolham with a pen of five decent Blue females (23m) to 1070 for Keith & Hilary Harvey. The best of a fine run of Blonde and Limousin cross cattle from the Haimes family of Brixton, Plymouth caught the eye with a single muscled Blonde heifer (15m) to 970, and second prize winning show heifers, a bunch of four Blondes (17m) to 940 apiece again from the Haimes family. John Robinson of Cruwys Morchard topped the sale at 890 with powerful Limousin steers with others to 815 (12m). Tom Pollard of North Bovey achieved 860 for Simmental cross steers (11m) with others to 835 and 790, whilst Michael Turner of East Allington made 845 for Simmental steers (10m). JW Reddaway & Son of Okehampton hit 790 for Charolais steers (13m), John Jordon of Gidleigh realised 785 for Limousin crosses (10m) with younger sorts achieving 775. A good show of Blue steers saw the best from Colin Pople of Aylesbeare reach 755 (11m), whilst Rob & Una Mingo of Whitestone hit 730 (10m). Younger steers were just as dear, with a cracking consignment from Roy Gillard, Cheriton Bishop seeing Limousin crosses (6m) attain 700. Blue heifers (11m) from Colin Pople attained 625, Simmental heifers (13m) from Tom Pollard reached 605. JW Reddaway & Son made 600 with Limousin crosses, whilst Charolais heifers from the same vendor realised 595. Friesian steers from Ashwater Farms, Winkleigh hit 470 (13m), whilst younger sorts from J & K Northcott of Saltash topped at 380. Heifers topped at 320 from SEJ Tapp & Son of Chevithorne showing Blues, Limousin heifers from Lower Collipriest Farm Ltd attained 278, others from AP & RE Retter achieved 260 and 245, Simmental heifers from C & EC Mills realised 275, MR & KM Pring of Broadclyst attained 270 for similar sorts. Angus heifers from PG Blackmore & Sons reached 172, whilst AR Hooper hit 145 & 142. A bit of bite for Black and Whites with the best realising 90 from Lower Collipriest Farm Ltd, whilst F & H Farms of Tiverton attained 85. 1526 SHEEP 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 318701 1245 STORE LAMBS No best killing lambs forward but best framed short keep lambs reached 72.50 for Zwartbles from Jethro Kimber of Okehampton whilst 70 was given for the best of good runs from both Mark Brown of Uplowman and Jonathan Musgrave of Yealmpton who had others at 66 & 67 respectively. Phil Trump of Luton sold his Easycare tup lambs at 67.50 and both the Hutchings family of Chagford and Isaac Parker of Moreleigh received 67 of their better pens and Merv Hutchings of Launceston hit 66 with his first pen. Medium lambs mid to late 50 s and a pound or two dearer than last week and fewer small lambs under 45 with them generally either side of 50 and easing the overall up by just over a pound to 56.54. 91 GRAZING EWES & RAMS Grazing rams peaked at 82 for T Herbert of Saltash who also had a good pen of ewes at 66 and 64.50. Ewes peaked at 72 for Andrew Poole of Lapford with Suffolk crosses and a decent pen of Mules from Mark Brown achieved 60. 184 BREEDING EWES & RAMS A tidy entry in the breeding sheep section with Suffolk cross Mule Shearlings/4T selling at 103 for Andrew Poole who also had 6T/FM ewes at 93 (x2), 84 & 82 as well as lost side teeth at 74. Other breeding ewes at 88 for young Charollais type ewes from Robert Partridge of Teignmouth and FM Mules realised 82 (x2) for Tony Pickard of South Molton. Just a couple of breeding rams sold to 220 & 210 for a Suffolk FM & Charollias 6T respectively from Dennis Turner of Wotter. 6 COUPLES (3 EWES & 3 LAMBS) And so the season starts again! A late born Zwartbles single from Robert Partridge topped at 120 while two old Dorset ewes with young single lambs on from Ken & Brenda Cole of Loxbeare made 95. Top call for again, the biggest entry of sows in any UK market topped at 140 for Chris Down of Budleigh Salterton. Colin Gibbins of Feniton saw his coloured sows reach 138 with others from the Down family at 130 (x3) and the pick of Andrew Freemantle s run at 130. 101 PRIME & STORE PIGS Again, good numbers forward saw the best prime pigs at 124 for the best of sixteen from Richard & Vicky Gibbins of Poltimore. Messrs Anthony hit 120 for their pen of three with Lathy s Farm, Exeter again at 120 (x8). Most nicely finished pigs topping the 100 bracket with very little difference in the trade seen at our last market.
