Seventeenth Annual Multnomah Service Area Klondike Derby At White River Snow Park Near Government Camp, Oregon Saturday February 3, 2017 9:00 am 3:00 pm Attention all Boy Scout Patrols and Webelos Dens: Join us at Mt. Hood for a day of Scouting Adventure! GENERAL INFORMATION This year s Klondike Derby will be open to all Boy Scout Patrols and Webelos Dens. WHEN: February 3, 2017 WHERE: White River Snow Park. IMPORTANT: SNOW PARK PASS IS REQUIRED FOR ALL VEHICLES! COST: $15.00 for each scout participating and for each Adult Leader (Except staff Members.) $5.00 for Staff members. TIME: From 9:00 am to about 3:30 pm

History: The Klondike is a region of the Yukon Territory of Canada where gold was discovered in 1896. The area is roughly centered on the town of Dawson. A Scout Klondike Derby is based on the real life struggles across the frozen Klondike by men and dogs in search of wealth in the gold fields. Those struggles were life and death matters. The Scout Klondike Derby is a fun-filled winter competition featuring Scout skill challenges at a series of stations. Each Patrol becomes a dog sled team and proceeds to the various stations to try their abilities. The Sled is loaded with the material and equipment needed to solve the problems at the stations, as well as lunch for the patrol members. The Klondike Derby will proceed Snow, Rain or Shine even if there is NO Snow. Unit Roster: The Unit Leader will fill out the patrol roster attached to the end of this leaders guide. Recommended patrol sizes are 8 members. Adult members are encouraged to serve as station judges. No patrol may enter the Klondike Derby unless they are listed on the Roster sheet signed by Scoutmaster. Schedule: 9:00 to 9:30 Arrival and Registration 9:30 to 9:45 Judges Meeting 9:30 to 9:45 Patrol Leaders Meeting 9:45 to 9:55 Opening Flag Ceremony 9:55 to 12:00 Competition in patrol site 12:00 to 12:45 Lunch Judging about 12:30 12:45 to 2:30 Competition on the trail 2:45 to 3:00 Sled Race 3:00 to 3:10 Announcement of the Winners (1 st, 2nd, and 3 rd place) 3:10 to 3:15 Closing Flag Ceremony Lunch: Lunch is part of the competition. It must be cooked in the patrol s assigned area by the Patrol, and all patrol members must be present to be judged. The judging will take place about 12:30 pm. Each patrol may be awarded up to 500 points for preparing a HOT LUNCH.

Bringing Pre-sliced food is ok, but pre-cooked or making a cold lunch sandwich and a beverage will be awarded no more than 150 points. Adult Leaders are expected to eat with their patrols and monitor lunch safety. A Hot lunch will be provided for the staff. VERY IMPORTANT: Adults (other than Staff) must bring their own Lunch. There are no facilities at which you can buy lunch, and water is not available. NO OPEN FIRES ARE PERMITTED. NO LIQUID FUELS. Propane stoves are required for cooking. Deductions will be made for the following: Adult help of any sort (except Webelos) Use of open fire Use of liquid fuel (white Gas) Leaving the site without proper cleanup Up to 300 points 500 points Up to 250 points Up to 300 points RULES Sleds should be similar to the drawing enclosed. We encourage initiative in design, but please observe the basic construction dimensions, length, height, and width. No wheels are permitted on the sled regardless of the weather. Patrols must compete all members present at each station. The patrol may not be split into two or more parts to complete at more than one station at the same time. Hot Sparks are permitted in the Fire by Flint and Steel event only. Eye protection will be provided and must be worn. Each Patrol will be assigned a Group Number as identification during the event. Each Patrol Leader will be given a schedule and score cards on a ring at the Patrol Leader s Meeting. o The morning competition, judges will rotate to each patrols site. o Patrols are encouraged (but not required) to try all afternoon stations. o Some afternoon stations will be timed. Webelos Den Leaders or Den Chiefs should accompany their Den throughout the day. They should work with the Den to make the Klondike Derby a learning experience of Scouting Skills.

Adult Leaders and Visitors are welcome to observe the operation of the Klondike Derby, but we do ask that they NOT accompany Scout Patrols throughout the day. NO Coaching of the Boy Scout Patrols, or delivering items to any Patrol, will be permitted once the Derby starts. One of the objects of this event is to encourage the scouts to use their own resources and make their own decisions. THE DECISION OF EACH JUDGE IS FINAL. THERE IS NO SYSTEM OF APPEALS. Scoring: Points will be awarded at each station based on the difficulty of the problem and the correctness and/or completeness of the Patrol s response. Up to 500 points will be awarded for the Lunch competition. 250 for on time registration. This is a Patrol event. Each judge will be allowed to award a ten point (all or nothing) bonus for Patrol Cooperative Effort and Team Spirit at each station. IMPORTANT NOTE! ABSOLUTELY NO COACHING OF THE BOY SCOUT PATROLS BY ADULT LEADERS WILL BE TOLERATED. WEBELOS LEADERS OR DEN CHEIFS MAY COACH THEIR PATROLS. JUDGES: In order for the Klondike Derby to be a Success, we need judges to staff the stations. We would like the Klondike Derby to be an activity for all scouts. If the more senior scouts choose not to compete, we encourage them to serve as judges (a hot lunch is provide for staffing). Questions and answers with all materials necessary will be provided for each station. We are asking each scout troop to provide at lease 2 judges. Each judge should recruit a second judge to allow for breaks during the day. Please Contact Angie Liechty at mopargirl440@live.com to pre-register as a judge, and choose your station. Judges are required to be at their stations during normal competition time. Since it may be a long distance to some stations, it is a good idea to pack a Thermos of coffee or hot chocolate, a chair, and anything to make the day more enjoyable.
