Stour Print Guernsey Young Bird & Old Hens Race Young Bird Winner Old Hens Winner 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd Open 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd SE Section 1 st Open 1 st SE Section Jason Bowen from Waterlooville Dave & Lisa Waterhouse from Portsmouth with Jason Choice Louisa & The Don with Tayla s Lass The Classic 2014 racing season has now been put to bed, with our final race for the young birds and old hens being from Guernsey. The Committee would like to congratulate all the winners from all races and thank everyone involved with the Classic who have worked tirelessly this season to ensure everything runs smoothly from the day of marking right through to the liberation and thank all our sponsors whose kind generosity is very much appreciated. The young bird race was very well supported with 214 members sending 2,208 birds and the old hens race saw 71 members enter 319 birds. After waiting for a big black rain cloud to clear on Saturday morning the birds were liberated at 8.30am in to a light west wind with north westerly winds forecast on route. The liberation was as usual watched by the terrific guys on Guernsey who unbeknown to some of you, gather all the stray pigeons that land on Guernsey together and have them sent back to the mainland to be released. Which we would like to thank them for all their help. The race itself was one of the best young bird races we have had across the channel for a long time with almost everyone in all sections verifying within 3 hours and great returns too. We also had a very special treat. Professional photographer Chris George from Coast Media on Guernsey, takes a pic of the day every day of the year and on August 23 rd he chose the Classic liberation to be his pic of the day which was great for us and the sport. If you would like a better view of the photograph and to see some of Chris other work, you can visit Chris website at http://chrisgeorgephotography.dphoto.com. Winner of the 2014 Classic young bird race with 3 birds dropping together is previous Classic winner Jason Bowen from Waterlooville 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd Open 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd SE Section. What an excellent race. The birds came brilliantly having 20 of the 22 in very good time, my first arrival over the pad having three dropping together is a blue hen that I purchased on the coach trip to Blackpool and bred by Garry Moody who I thank for allowing me to pick the bird when visiting his lofts, my

second is a blue chequer hen of Janssen bloodlines from Sheldon Leonard with the third also being Janssen cock bird from pigeons I introduced this year. A big thank you to the Classic convoying team on the brilliant conditions the pigeons are kept in. I would also like to thank my daughters Vicky and Charlotte for all the help they give with the birds. Jason and Vicky Bowen. Jason s winner.

Vicky with 2 nd open. Jason s with 3 rd open.

Jason s loft. In 4 th Open we have another previous winner Mark Duffell of M & L Duffell from Portsmouth. Mark timed a blue pied cock which was his favoured pigeon. He was 16 th Solent Fed the previous week 1,657 birds and also 61 st Solent Fed Kingsdown 1,572 birds. 5 th Open is Mr & Mrs Garry Moody from Portsmouth who are having a cracking young bird season. Our first young bird is off our good hen Shirley s Girl, who was 3 rd Section 23 rd Open Tarbes 2012, 1 st Section 3 rd Open Tarbes 2013 and is one of our Morris Matthews family. She has been 3 rd Club 44 th Fed 1,352 birds, 12 th Club, 12 th Fed 1,645 birds beaten by 11 loft mate's when we took the first 13 in the Fed. We would like to say well done to Jason on taking the first three.

Garry and Lee. Jimmy Wearn and Erik Neilson from Ramsdean are 6th Open with a Heremans Ceusters blue hen bred for them by their good friend Frank Brownley. This partnership had a good race with good returns also taking 5th Open in the old hens race. Erik Neilson. Steve Vaizey from Fareham timed silver blue hen to take 7th Open position. The Sire is a blue cock Vandenabeele purchased last year from Bob Short online sale, top breeding grandson from Shadow/ Top Investment and T.C/Princess. The Dam is a silver blue hen, Vandenabeele Jester/Carrie and Shadow/ Saffron lines.

This hen has bred winners for Barry Robertson and is full sister to my Bramble cock back in South Africa 2009. Half brothers to GB14N30235 have scored for J & T Austin of Portsmouth, one being 1 st club 1 st Solent fed Bergerac and 21 st NFC one amongst others. She scored 2 nd club Kingsdown 1 st Meon Valley Club and has raced all 4 previous races and has just paired to an old cock the last few days, so hopefully next trip the NFC. Congratulations to Jason Bowen for taking the first 3 in today s race. Steve Vaizey. 8 th Open is Mr & Mrs Joe Langbridge (otherwise known as Speedy as he works so fast you can t see his hands move) from Sidlesham. The blue cock bird I timed was one of several in a surprise gift to us from Derek and Elaine Reid from Weybridge in Surrey from his Janssen family. We now call him Del-Boy, mind you he could got many other names as he is the only pigeon ever from the many that have been housed in this loft that can lift the bolting wire to escape in to the corridor then go up into the sputnik and jump out of the bob hole. In fact half an hour after timing I looked up to the loft to see a bird on the pitch board with wings outstretched thinking it was yet another damaged pigeon returned only to find guess who sunning himself. Fingers crossed he may get a little trip to Fougeres next week as a thank you.

Joe Langbridge. Les & Dawn Cross & Son Luke from Gosport are 9 th Open. Firstly, we would like to congratulate Jason Bowen on a fantastic result, and thank Clare and the team for putting together another brilliant race, with good returns all round and the birds arriving in good condition. We had 11/12 on the day, with a Janssen blue cock being 9th Open. This cock has had 3 west coast races with the Solent Fed and has already been to Guernsey with Joe's training just a week prior. He was flown back to 14 day eggs. His next race will be with Fougeres with the NFC where we hope he can repeat this sort of performance. Last but by no means least I'd like to mention my wife and son, Luke had his first taste of Classic racing in his own right being provisional 46 th Open and I'd like to say a massive thank you to Dawn for training and doing my birds as without out her I wouldn't be able to race as I would like due to Pigeon Fanciers Lung.

Les and Ellsie Cross. Top ten position goes to Brian & Viv Wall from Havant. This young bird was bred from stock birds. Both Sire and Dam are from Peter Fox of Syndicate lofts. The sire bred a young bird that won this race a year or two ago also a 1 st Section Winnner in the NFC. She was having her first race south as she has only raced North. Winners of the North East Section are Charlie & David Ward from Reading. Charlie only races with the Classic, BBC, NFC & BICC as being the Berkshire Fed Convoyer he isn t able to race in a local Club. The pigeon he timed was a Peter Van De Merwe cock bird bred by parents given to Charlie from his very good friends Peter and James Parker of Beenham. Charlie would like to thank Peter for all the quality birds given to him and his help and advice. This bird was Charlie s NE Section young bird nomination pigeon with his second pigeon not too far behind also in the nomination. 2 nd North East Section is the infamous Eamon Kelly from Steventon (Lloyd & Kelly). Firstly, I would like to congratulate Jason Bowen and the North East Section winners W & D Ward. My first pigeon timed went to the Guernsey Dorset Open Race in preparation for this one. She is a Rauw Sablon hen bred by my very good friend Roger Lowe.

I would like to thank Nigel Rigiani on an excellent race and the condition of the birds. I had 14 out of 15 on the day and the last one dropped in the next morning. Eamon, Grace and Jamie Rae. Steve Slade from Calne is 1 st North West Section this being Steve s second section win of the season under his belt. My blue hen is bred from John Halstead cross long distance pigeon. She has flown the West of England Young Bird Programme. I would like to thank Nigel for the good condition of the pigeons and send my congratulations to the winner.

Steve. Runners Up in the North West Section and also 3 rd NW Section is top fanciers Chris Howse & David Parsons from Devizes. Firstly we would like to congratulate Steve Slade on winning the section. We are pleased to be second and third Section, with our team of darkness young birds that were having there sixth race of the season, having previously been with Chippenham Club in the West of England combine. The birds are raced weekly with midweek training. This week from Bournemouth (Thanks Tom). The first bird is a son of one of our best birds STUMPY who has many good positions including first ace bird all NFC races 2012. The second bird is one that was bred by Darren Baker of the Smith and Baker partnership, down through syndicate lofts birds of the Drum lines, having previously been First club last week from Bedhampton 305 birds.

Chris Howse and David Parsons. The British Barcelona Club s Barcelona Blue Riband Winner Tony Stephens from Parkstone, Poole is 1 st South West Section. My pigeon is a blue Vandenabeele cock, raced naturally, this being his second race of the season. Last week he was 7 th Club 18 th Fed from Battle. He is bred from one of three pairs I bought last winter. I sent fifteen pigeons in this race from Guernsey, I had 11 back on the day. This is the 3 rd Section win I have had this year, one from the National, one from the BBC and one from the Classic. Well done to Mr Bowen for winning the race.

Tony. 2 nd South West Section is George Owers from Wareham. The bird that I timed from Guernsey was bred from a cock gifted to me from my good friend Mike Ward and a hen from my good friend Mervyn Gray. It's breeding is Corman cross De Klak and is fed on the Magic Mix Mervyn Gray. Many thanks to Dave Davies for taking my birds to the marking.

George. Old Hens Race The Winners of our Old Hens Race Dave & Lisa Waterhouse from Portsmouth have had an exceptional few weeks. They start off winning the very hard Bergerac Classic with Lone Soldier then top the National Flying Club Saintes Race with Sonny s Lad then win the Classic Old Hens Race. It shows that this loft is definitely in form as we rarely see an old hen beat the velocity of the young bird winner. We timed a Jacob Poortvliet late bred. These birds are exceptional for me. She is raced naturally and has an open hole all day. She was sent sitting eggs. Feeding is Verse Laga Super Widowhood.

Dave. 2 nd South East Section and 2 nd Open are Garry and Emily Moody from Portsmouth. Our old hen is a Janssen x Mattheuws, she had been 1 st Club 8 th Fed 1,899 birds, 6 th Club 42 nd Fed 1,401 birds, 3 rd Club 26 th Fed 2,154 birds. We had another just after this one which is the mother to Jason first Open Winner. We would like to congratulate Dave and Lisa on winning the old hens and a fantastic season they have had. In the photo is Lee and myself, I would like to thank Lee for all his help as without him it would be impossible for me to race this season.

Garry and Lee. Steve & Paul Kulpa from Reading are masters with the old hens, they haven t just topped the North East Section but have taken the first seven positions. Our first bird is a 2 year old Janssen De Klak, she is a half sister to Champion Sophia winner of 1st Open NFC. Her sire is 66 a grandson of Hans Eijerkamps Bartoli. She is a good bird and has scored well in the Club, Fed and NFC in the last 2 years. 2nd NE Section a yearling hen Janssen De Klak. Her sire is one of our top racing cocks and winner of 5 x 1st Club and 3 x 1st Fed and is now in the stock loft. Dam is a Van Triest Janssen bred by Gary Bicknell of Reading. This hen went missing as a young bird last year and only returned 8 weeks ago in excellent condition. She was flown out and trained with the young birds and sent every week as a trainer with the Fed. This was her first competitive race ever. Her nest sister was 1st NE Section yearling derby with the Classic this year. 3rd NE Section a 4 year old Heremans Ceusters hen, both her sire and dam are bred by Hans Eijerkamp from the lines of Euro. This is the best racing hen we own. She has won inland and across the channel and is at the front every week. This is possibly her last race as she will more than likely be moving to the stock loft. We had a really good race with the hens again this year, having 19/20 home within 45 minutes. All the hens started racing in April and have only had 1 week off between old bird and young bird racing in the Fed. They have been trained once a week for the last 4 weeks from 30 miles. All birds are fed on Versele Laga corn and Aviform products in the water.

Paul & Steve. Next up in the North East Section is Eddy and Joyce Kulpa from Reading. Joyce & Eddy Kulpa, parents and grand parents of the S & P Kulpa partnership. It was Steve who first got his mum interested in pigeons, when he got married he left some behind so Joyce & Eddy joined a new club being formed The Shinfield & District Club flying with the Berkshire & District Fed in 1979. We fly mostly birds coming from S & P Kulpa Stock, we get the pick of their best birds. GB13N10388 is a Chequer hen, she is a half sister to Sophia NFC Y/B Winner of Fougeres in 2004. Her sire is a Grandson of Bartoli and sire to Sophia. Dam is a Janssen De Klak from S & P Kulpa stock. She is a half sister to Steve & Paul s section winner from this race.

Joyce and Eddy Kulpa. 1 st North West Section is Trevor Cooke from Longlevens. The pigeon was bred out of stock birds gifted to me from my good friend Wyn Jenkins (South Wales) from his National winning bloodlines. She has taken 5 th Section J NFC Fougeres 2012, 5 th Section J NFC Carentan 2013 and many Club positions at the Longford Flying Club. She was sent to Guernsey sitting eggs for seven days.

Trevor Cooke. 2 nd North West Section is Bill Morris from Elmore. The Blue Hen '35' is a three year old who is usually first to the loft in the 'dodgy' hard races. Last year she was 2 nd Club Saintes with only 2 on the day. This year she had her first night out being just out of race time C.S.C.F.C Bergerac. As she was on her first youngster of the year I thought she would be keen which proved correct. She is bred from a very consistent cock who scored from C.S.C.F.C Bergerac. Unfortunately he was lost from the loft in early 2012. His sire was a cock from Palamos lines, his dam a hen from A. White of Hetton. The dam of '35' was a stock hen from Dordin lines. CONGRATULATIONS TREVOR.

Bill Morris. 1 st South West Section is Brian Freeman & Jason Peach from Abbotsbury. This hen is from a Van Wanroy + Janssen on the advise of Tony Hayne purchased from Ponderosa UK Stud when I first started racing. This is a plucky little hen that always flies well for us and we are very pleased with the result. Although we are still very much novices our birds are always there abouts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tony Swain who gave me young birds, Mary and Graham Ayles, Roy Samways that gave us surplus stock to get started, Kevin White and members of W.H.S for their very good advise, also my old mate Terry Vincent who said that he would not buy the British Homing World if there was a photograph of me in it.

Brian Freeman. 2 nd South West Section are Mike and Steve White from Bournemouth. Firstly, we would like to congratulate the winners of both races. Our pigeon is from our sprint family which are Staf Van Reets. Her sire was 5 th Open BBC Niort, 31 st Open CSCFC Messac and other positions in Club and National races before being retired for stock. He is a great grandson of 'Phyl's Boy' our 1999 1 st Open NFC Nantes. She has been celibate all year and raced a few races at the start of the year and was then left with the young birds and trained with them.

Mike and Steve with Grand daughter Nic.

Classic liberation. Convoyers Report With what seems like a blink of an eye here we at the last race of the season for the CSCFC, having loaded the 2,527 birds for Guernsey we made our way to the docks for the gruelling 13 hour crossing to the island which was probably the roughest crossing of the season. After arriving at the docks we made our way to the lib site and got set up in position for liberation the next day. As soon as we were set up the local lads turned up for a chat and information on the expected weather for the next day which sounded very promising for a good lib. Saturday dawned with 100% cloud cover and rain to the north of the Island but due to clear as the morning progressed. I would like to offer my thanks to Mick De Carteret for driving me up to Fort Doyle the most northerly point of the Island to see the state of the weather and sea conditions, with the light westerly wind blowing I could see that the showers to the north would clear within the hour and blue skies to the east would give the liberation sky that was needed to get the young birds off to the best possible start.

By 08:00 the skies began to clear and the strings were cut for a lib at 08:30. A photographer was on site to take pictures for the local paper which was running a picture of the day feature, standing about 3 metres from the transporter I advised him that it would be safer to move back another 20 metres which he did as can be seen from the fantastic picture included. The birds joined up and headed north and left about 100 birds circling on the coastline for about 5 minutes before clearing out to sea, early indications were that it was going to be a good race which is a nice way to finish off the season. Thanks to all concerned on the Island for their help namely Rene, Albert, Mick, Glen, Richard and those who's names I do not know, all the Ic's, markers, Bill our driver and lastly Clare who's none stop efforts brings it all together and work so well.
