The Scentinel York County Kennel Club of Maine, Inc. September 2013 A From the Editor: couple of weekends ago, I achieved a goal. My little girl Oonah earned her UKC Weight Pull title. Although I have owned Malamutes for over 20 years, Oonah is the first one that I have done weight pulling with. It has been so much fun working with her and watching her discover this inherent (and inherited) talent. Perhaps I am just a sentimental old sap, but I always seem to shed a few tears every time my dog earns a new title. Mostly they are tears of joy. At the moment when the wheels of that weight cart roll over the finish line with 1000 pounds of cinder blocks on the cart and I hear the judge yell pull, and I know that my dog just achieved something that a few months ago I would have told you was impossible well, there is just no word for that emotion. At that moment when Oonah throws her head back to howl and I embrace that fuzzy neck with my arms, at that moment, there is nothing in this world except one dog, one person and an incredible bond of trust, love, and commitment to each other. At the same time however, I always feel just a bit of sadness each time we achieve a goal. My mind slips into the reality that there are so many dogs out there that will never know what it is like to be somebody s only dog in the world. Not because they are not capable, every dog has a champion somewhere inside, but because they don t have someone willing to find that champion, pull it out and polish it up. So now go find your dog, give them a hug and tell them that they are the only dog in the world. And then go say a prayer for the dog that hasn't been told that yet. Sarah Thank you to everyone who made Meet The Breeds a wonderful, educational, memorable day! One of Danielle Cooley s adorable setter puppies at Meet the Breeds. Let s Think About Hi all -- requesting some ideas for the next meeting Sept 30 -- 7 pm -- I brought up the idea of AWARDS for those members who had completed a title on their dog -- we are looking for idea's for the "award item" to be given, would like you all to come to the next meeting and bring your idea's and examples with you -- I brought in a 3 foot ribbon that one of the other clubs I belong to for an example -- but we need more ideas from you and a discussion on this idea...comments and perhaps a photo attached may give us some more idea's if unable to attend -- but we want you to bring and example for us to see in "real time"... thanks in advance for your thoughts -Karen Gatchell The Scentinel, September 2013, Page 2

(Goldens are having an obedience match only.) Meet the Breeds The Scentinel, September 2013, Page 3
There are other breeds/clubs and members with dogs who are coming. We need volunteers to come to Meet the Breeds and man the YCKC table. Contact Steve if you can help. Saccarappa is not doing Rally this year. Website It was suggested that we put "last Monday of every month," plus the specific meeting dates, on the website and on Facebook to announce meetings. ( Last Monday is already in both places.) Cluster Shows Judge selection is still ongoing because 2 judges backed out. Next Cluster Committee meeting is 9/10 at 7:30 at YCCU. Club Worker Appreciation Dinner Need to get an email out to invited members about it. (Who will do this?) September 13 at 6 PM at the Bull 'n' Claw. Meet at 6-7 for drinks, dinner at 7. There's a signup sheet. Unfinished Business none New Business Carroll says it's time we replaced those old tables. There are 6 new ones and 2 old ones. Carroll moves to throw out 2 old ones and buy 4 new ones. Tracey seconded. Susan will buy them on sale at BJ's. Karen Gatchell showed the club a rosette that the TarTan Gordon Club gives out to every member who gets a title within a year. They would go to owners of dogs only. Has to be confirmed by AKC after filling out form. Should we recognize AKC, CKC, UKC any title, or just AKC titles? Discussion: Should we offer extra stickies for ribbons, host an awards dinner, offer plaques like POC's instead of rosettes? Bring ideas to the next meeting. Sarah will put it in the newsletter. The New Title rosettes that we offered at the Cluster went over very well last year. Charlotte has a slide projector on offer to the club. Any ideas for another guest speaker? John Kelly won the 50-50 raffle -- he gets $39. Xmas Party We need ideas for a place to hold it. Oak St. Bistro in Alfred? They have a function room. Everybody orders off the menu. We can still have Yankee Swap. Gloria will find out if they can host the party, as well as possible dates. The party is usually on a Sunday around 2 PM. Motion to adjourn: Karen Gatchell, seconded by John Kelly. Next meeting: September 30. Respectfully submitted, Karen Norteman Recording Secretary Do you know a club member who could use a little sunshine? If you know of someone who could use some well wishes for any reason, please don t hesitate to contact the sunshine committee via Sarah Todd.
