Guernsey OB Race Mark and Les Duffell from Havant 1 st Open 1 st SE Section with Last Minute It wasn t long before the Central Southern Classic s first race of the season was upon us, 304 members sending 3,109 birds over the English Channel to the lovely Island of Guernsey. Guernsey is a race point which favours a lot fanciers at the beginning of the season, as in the past even pigeons with little experience seem to do well from here. Also in our convoy we had 849 birds from the London & South East Classic Club with their first race of the year. The forecast for Saturday was reasonable with patchy light rain showers in places but nothing really posing a threat to the liberation. So there it was, Nigel liberated the 3,109 pigeons into blue skies at 9.15am with a 15mph south west wind. Releasing the LSECC birds 20 minutes later at 9.35am. Marking went swiftly due to the effort of all markers and helpers. Many thanks to those who helped as all four marking stations were faultless. Please could members be reminded that all pigeons must be written on your Part B not just pool pigeon s. What a great achievement for new members Mark and Les Duffell of Havant taking 1 st Open 1 st SE Section, after only two weeks as Classic members with their aptly named Last Minute. Mark moved to Havant two years ago from Epsom in Surrey leaving his Uncle, partner Les still in Epsom. Having had good success with a small team of widowhood cocks in the Three Borders Fed winning it on several occasions. Mark became a member of the Channel Racing Club in 2011 and after a few wins decided to join the CSCFC this year. He sent a small team of cocks to Guernsey after just one race in the Solent Fed. He timed his first bird at 10.53 to record 1 st Open on his first attempt. The Classic Winner was bred from birds given to him from friends in Kingston, Chris Slight and Trevor Taylor when paired with his own Van Reets. Mark has entered his 12 th year of racing keeping only has 6 pairs of stock birds and breeding around 40 youngsters a year. He has about 50 olds but only races 11 or 12. The birds are fed on Vanrobaeys all year round.

Mark Duffell. The Runners Up spot goes to David Fry also of Havant. Dave s pigeon is a 2 year old blue widowhood Cock of Lou Wouters bloodlines bred down from Andre Roodhooft stock purchased from Roger Lowe out of his Wonder Boy National winner. Dave has previously won 1 st section A NFC in 2011 and 2012 with the De Klak blood line obtained from Roger Lowe whom he wishes to thank for the excellent stock. Dave Fry.

Next up we have Richie Thomas of Portsmouth recording 3 rd Open 3 rd SE Section. Congratulations to the winner and Dave Fry for second open. It was a very windy and overcast Saturday morning up on the hill where I live. The weekend didn t get off to a good start, because when I went to the marking station Jayne forgot my pocket clock. (This is the Classic Secretary interrupting Richie s write up. I have it on good source that it was Richie who forgot the clock and blamed Jayne). So I had to go back home to Portsmouth to get it. On basket night on Friday at the pigeon Club, I was four pigeons missing that had not been registered on my clock. I went to bed with all this on my mind, where was my missing pigeons? I woke up all through the night. When I woke up in the morning and it was raining and really windy, I thought they're not going up in this weather, but where are my missing pigeons? Then at 9.30am my mate Mikey Wilson told me the Classic birds are up. I thought the birds would be an hour and 50 minutes. To my surprise they took an hour and 35 minutes that's 95 minutes to fly 115 miles. The pigeon I got was a super Soontjen bred by Paul Stobbs of County Durham, One of ten I bought last year. The system which I am flying this year is a Remi De May type system. I am flying 18 cocks and 18 hens and they seem to be coming well on it but its early days yet, but where are my four missing pigeons? I will tell you where my four missing pigeons were. In the nest boxes where I left them! That I only found on the Saturday morning when I went to feed the other pigeons in my loft. So the ETS clock was right when it told me how many I sent in the Solent Fed. I bred 60 babies this year to fly on the system what I call baby hood, they are kept in a 16ft by 6ft shed with two bays on the front so the babies can have a bath and lay in the sun. The babies have to fly the full Solent Fed young bird programme. All my pigeons are fed Versele Laga corn from Kevin King and I also use corn and products from Brian and Viv Wall of Gem. I would like to thank my lovely wife Jayne and my daughter Courtney for helping and motivating me because my health has not been very good lately. I would also like to thank Rodney Broome for training my pigeons. This is Richie Thomas keeping it real living in the golden mile. Peace.

Richie and Jayne Thomas. 4 th Open 4 th SE Section is Jason Bowen of Havant. Jason s first pigeon in the clock is a 2 year old Janssen Cock of Jimmy Wearn bloodlines. The pigeon was sent after previously having two coast races with the Solent Federation and having been trained and feeding a six day old youngster. He was raced in 2012 on widowhood being very consistent to the loft and being first bird from Le Mans in the BICC. I would like to thank my wife Lynda for all her help with doing most of the chores whilst I m at work, if it wasn t for her I wouldn t be able to race, My thanks also to the Classic Team for an excellent race with 100% returns. Jason Bowen s Janssen cock. Taking 5 th & 6 th Open 5 th & 6 th SE Section is Mr and Mrs Garry Moody of Portsmouth.

We had two birds together both of these being yearlings flown on roundabout, the first bird is from my direct Braspennings, this pair having bred three Fed winners and a Section winner in the NFC. My second bird also a Braspenning but this time a cross with Mattheuws also out of my stock loft. I would like to thank Mim my wife and my friend Lee Freshney as with out there help it would be impossible for me to race. My congratulations to Mark Duffell a Club member on his First Open. Garry Moody with Grandsons Frankie and Archie. Recording 1 st & 2 nd NE Section 14 th &15 th Open is Steve & Paul Kulpa from Reading. Steve and Paul s first bird is a 4 year old Janssen x Van Loon hen. Her sire was bred from the line of Hans Eijerkanmps Bartoil & Flits, her Dam from our old Van Loon lines. Previous results for this hen include 4 th Section E 19 th Open NFC Messac last year, although she is not a winner, she has taken many Club and Federation positions. Second bird in the clock another 4 year old hen, this one a full Eijerkamp Janssen. Her sire is a direct son of Hans Eijerkamps Mr Bond. Her Dam is a Grandaughter of Eijerkamps Flits. All of the birds are fed on Versese Laga widowhood mix and given Aviform products in the water.

Steve and Paul Kulpa. Next up in the section is Jim Derbyshire of Whitchurch taking 3 rd NE Section 19 th Open with a 3 year old mealy cock GB10N32344, this pigeon previously taking many other positions including, 37 th Solent Fed 1,759 birds, 68 th open 3 rd section CSCFC Carentan also 26 th open 6 th section CSCFC in 2011 winning the yearling derby, 58 th open 3 rd section BBC Carentan, 139 th open NFC Fougeres 7,064 birds. This pigeon also won the Club race the week prior to this race. This clearly a pigeon on form. The pigeon is bred by Carden Garrod of Whitchurch, it s a gift bird which is a Van Reet raced on the Widowhood system. Jim Derbyshire. Topping the North West Section is Steve Slade from Calne also taking 2 nd Section as well. Steve s first of his two pigeons scoring well was a cock who has previously won 1 st Exeter out of 170 birds in the Chippenham Club. Also he was 5 th Club Newton Abbott out of 206 birds. The hen and second pigeon in the clock has had one race this season winning 1 st Club out of 206 birds and 12 th Combine, 5074 birds. This is Steve s second North West Section win in the Classic, he won the section in 2011 from the Carentan young bird race.

Steve Slade. 3 rd NW Section is the pairing of Chris Howse and David Parsons from Devizes. The bird we timed is a 2 year old widowhood cock, it s the nest mate to our Tours YB winner. It was a consistent yearling last year being 28 th open NFC Fougeres. This was our first competitive race of the season, prior to this they had trainers from Seaton and Poole. We actually had two together but the first bird failed to register and we did not notice for 5 minutes so we will be checking the clock straight away in future. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to the Convoyer and Race Controller for a good race. Chris Howse with Grandaughter Layla. One of the Classic s most consistent section winners is the married partnership of Mark and Julie Gower from Fordingbridge who once again takes 1 st SW Section position.

My section winner is a Vandenabeele cock raced on roundabout. He is bred from a pair of pigeons purchased from Phillip Waters of Salisbury when he stopped racing. The section winner is a yearling on his first race of the season after having five 25 mile training tosses when work and weather permitted. As a young bird he had 4 races, the last two being the Classic where he was 7 th Section and then the next week the very hard young bird National where he was my 3 rd bird home. I had 9 of my 10 birds home on Saturday. Mark Gower messing about on the water! Mark s fellow Club member Roger Smith of Salisbury is in the Runners Up position of the SW Section. Roger s bird is a Janssen x Busschaert. These birds are raced on traditional widowhood. This is the 3 rd race of this pigeon s season and previously was 10 th club from Exeter last week. Roger prefers inland racing now but has proved he is no stranger to success as he incidentally was the first winner of the Classic s Blue Riband race from Pau back in 1976.
