April APRIL 2011 Getting to Know Your New President, Dawn Druge A bit about me: 5 th generation Northern Californian 4H r as a child Favorite Job: Working with severely challenged children Favorite Country outside of the US: Austria Favorite State: Alaska Favorite hobby: Outside of working the dogs, I love to kayak and ATV Stupidest vacation stunt: Running myself over with an ATV. My shirt had the tread marks to prove showing off can have bad results. NEWFOUNDLAND CLUB OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA The NewfsPaper I ve had animals throughout my life which has included several dogs, Hans our German Shepherd/ Coyote mix. My parents adopted him before I was born. Hans lived to the wonderful age of 18 and in his younger years could scale an 11 foot fence. Bruno our white German Shepherd, very gracefully cruised the perimeter of our 3 acres but never crossed the fence line. Muffin, our little Lahsa mix, who I nicknamed, Egg. Luke, my Newfy/Lab, would jump off our diving board trying to rescue me anytime we would swim. Rhett, we rescued at the tender age of 7. Rhett was a Golden Retriever mix who would dive 10 feet if needed to retrieve a rock thrown into the lake. Nikki, also a rescued Golden, could not swim but would stay on top of a boogie board and float for hours. Our horses; Scooter the Quarter Horse who we would use to round up our Standard Bred horse, Pepsi, who would run around the pasture playing catch me if you can. Then, the coolest donkey ever, Dandee, would swim in our pool with us. A cat named Tiger, (I know that s original) who saved us from numerous rattle snakes. Sunshine, our Nubian goat, preferred being on top of anything, including my Mother s beloved Lincoln Town Car. Why Newfs for me? The first time I saw a Newf it was love at first sight. It was summertime when I was 16 years old and running an errand to the grocery store for my Mom. As I got out of my car about to cross the street, I had to stop for a car to go by. There they were; two beautiful black male Newfs in the back of a Jeep CJ5 with its top off. The two boys took up the entire back of the little Jeep. I was hooked, in love and yes, it took me until my 30 s to be able to open my home responsibly to a Newf. What a dream come true and one so worth waiting for. Cooper was my first Newf who lived to 12 ½ years. I was so very lucky to have him that long. Cooper became a champion and started my intense love for the breed. I will always love my, Superspunk. Taylor loved the ocean and loved pushing his water bowl across the frozen deck. We called it Newf hockey. Zack is now 6 and loves being a house Newf. He has done an outstanding job pretending he s not the sharpest tool in the shed. By doing so he doesn t have to do anything but enjoy the couch and go for long walks - that working stuff is for the other dogs. Viggo, who I can t believe is 5 already, has been a life altering dog for me. Through Viggo, I have gained a love working with our dogs. Viggo has earned his CH, WRD, DD1, CGC, and he is a CD away from earning his VN. I am very proud of him. I have met so many new friends who share the passion of working with their dogs. I can t thank my mentors enough for their willingness to share their knowledge, laugh, and sometimes cry, with me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Gabe, our l year old who, (now we know what the breeder meant by, special ) is full of energy and makes us laugh and pull our hair out at the same time. All kidding aside, he is very eager to learn and is going to be fun to watch grow and share in his brother s accomplishments. Lastly we have our Newfy Nanny, Bogart. Bogart is a 15 ½ year old husky mix who raised all of our Inside this issue: Birthdays / New Members 3 Health & Rescue / Where Are They 4 Current Events 5 Regional Volunteer Jobs 6 Summer Picnic Info & Registration 7 2010 New Titlists and Award Winners 9 Meeting Minutes 10 Calendar 11 NCNC.org User name: webnewf Password: gentlegiants NEW! He s been the chew toy, slime licker, chase toy, and rules ever so gracefully as a true Alpha should. Thank you to all of my breeders for allowing me to share my life with your precious babies. I would like to take a few sentences to thank some very special people. Thank you, Pam Rubio, for acting as club president last year; you re going to be a hard act to follow. I had the pleasure of co-chairing a working event with Pam last year and I enjoyed every moment. You are so selfless with your time and always have a smile on your face. Thank you to the outgoing board members, Summer Poris and Joyce Taylor. The time you both gave to this club is greatly appreciated. I know each one of us were able to participate in many events last year due to your efforts. Thank you to all of the club volunteers from Committee Chairs, Regional Organizers, Heart and Eye clinic organizers, NH&R, Event Stewards, and to the many other task takers whose time made 2010 so successful. Thank you to Pam Rubio and Gina Bonnell for the outstanding Awards Banquet. I know we all enjoyed the food and Newfy comradery your event provided. Congratulations to all who earned a title last year and to those of you who tried, I am so hopeful we will be able to share in your joy of earning that title at next year s banquet. I am so very proud of our club, dogs, volunteers, mentors, and coaches. I feel honored to be your President. ~D.D. Newfoundland Health & Rescue Raffle is Coming - Reminder! The NH&R annual raffle will be held at the picnic June 18, 2011. Please think about us as you do your spring cleaning or purchasing and donate some wonderful items!! If you have items to donate, you may contact Hazel Jacoby at 510-582-9027, jhbar@comcast.net, or June Gibson at 714-292-8461, jdgibson2525@att.net. This is a major fund raiser for rescue and we appreciate your assistance both by helping us have terrific things to raffle and by purchasing tickets at the picnic. Dogs in Rescue Here is a summary of rescue dog activity: Buddy: A 5 year old black male, required cruciate surgery. Is recovering and will be adopted when medically cleared Reina: A 7 year old black female, ready for a new home. Molly: A 10 month old black female, has been adopted. Rocky: An 8 year old black male, neutered, brother of Bullwinkle, being medically evaluated. Bullwinkle: An 8 year old black male, neutered, brother of Rocky, being medically evaluated. Donations We would like to thank and acknowledge the following for their donations: Lori and Timothy Coen Bill Parsons Rachel Poole Nancy Shockley in memory of Merle Mary Elizabeth & Bob Stucky Samantha Westgate Rally to Rescue (Purina) Where Are They Now? Harvey and Sierra chose us as their guardians in the summer of 2008. Sierra came first, and about a month later Harvey joined us. They are our fourth and fifth rescue Newfs, and numbers six and seven overall. Sierra, a black female was 18 months and about 110 lbs. when she picked us. The first couple of months were quite amusing, as she was scared about everything. From the fax machine going off, to the corner of a throw rug folding over, she would run and hide. She soon settled in, and loves to run in our back yard, still thinking she can catch the squirrels that live in our oak trees. And although we have a pool, Sierra is the one Newf that I know of that does not like the water. We will never forget the day Harvey joined the family. He was a hardy, large 9 year old, weighing about 160 lbs. at the time, with a very full coat. He is mostly black, but it looks like he stepped into two buckets of white paint with his front legs. He also has a white collar and streaks on his chest, and the tips of his tail and two back feet are also white. Sierra was in the backyard enjoying the summer evening; I brought Harvey through the house and out to meet Sierra. As soon as Sierra saw Harvey, she approached him with tail wagging, and dropped, lying down in front of him. Almost like she was bowing, and letting Harvey know he was the alpha dominant one!! Even though there is an 8 year difference in the two, we always see them together. One of the many great things about Harvey is his tireless effort to keep up with Sierra not only in their backyard but also when they walk the neighborhood. In December 2008, Harvey gave us a scare as he needed to have surgery to have his spleen removed. But with the love and care of Dr. Erin Felton (also owned by a Newf), he came through like a champ. Through his treatment, Dr. Felton also discovered that Harvey has a heart condition, and we have been successfully managing this ever since. Robin and I enjoy every minute we spend with Harvey and Sierra. We have taken them to Lake Tahoe to enjoy the snow, but mostly you will find the four of us at home in our backyard or strolling the neighborhood. Even at 11 years old last summer, I was able to get Harvey in the pool and swim a few laps with me. He even gets nervous and paces around the pool (as he should) when anybody is in the water. I don t think he has figured out that it s only 4 ½ feet deep!! Sierra avoids the water as much as possible. The highlight of their day is the morning trip to Starbucks where my wife gets her tea and Harvey and Sierra get a biscuit. They even join us on our holiday trips because they are truly part of our family. ~ Robert and Robin Merritt Page 4 THE NEWFSPAPER

Call for Volunteers Preparations are currently underway for this year s NCNC Regional Specialty. As always there are many jobs to fill to make this a successful show. Many of our club members consistently volunteer year after year and many are burned out. We would really love to see some new faces getting involved to help support the club. Any member can help. Pet People, Show People, or Working Dog People. Many of the volunteer jobs require little to no experience at all. We have plenty of past volunteers who would be happy to mentor new people. Some of the positions require more than one person, as it might be an all day job where people can take turns for a few hours each. The club pays for or reimburses for any items needing to be purchased. If you would like to volunteer or if you think you might be interested in a position, but aren t too sure of the duties, please contact Pam- pamelar@garlic.com or Gina- bonnell_2001@yahoo.com Jobs Description Announcer / Status Board Banquet Catalog Ads Eye Clinic Heart Clinic Judges Gifts Judges Hospitality NewfTide Correspondent Participant Gifts Raffle Ring Hospitality Ring Stewards Set up microphone & amplifier, announce classes, mark status board Arrange catering, take reservations, set up room/decorate, breakdown Accept ads and fees - submit to show secretary Schedule appointments, supervise clinic, assist doctor and patients Schedule appointments, supervise clinic, assist doctor and patients Purchase gifts for judges Provide transportation to and from airport, take to dinner Roam the show, write an article for NewfTide Purchase participant gifts Solicit for donations, set up at show, sell tickets, call raffle Provide cold/hot beverages for each ring/judge, re-supply throughout day Assist judges, check in dogs and answer questions A HUGE Thank You to those that have already volunteered for the Regional. Reminders from the Treasurer Just a reminder to all of some NCNC financial policies. Note that the financial policy is documented on the Website in the Member's Area. In order to expedite the processing of vouchers, please remember the following: Use the current voucher (on the Website ncnc.org in the Member's Area). Checks will not be written without a voucher approved by the appropriate person (signed is best!). Any expense over $20 requires a receipt before payment will be made. Thank you for helping make the process as easy as possible for everyone! Hazel Jacoby Treasurer February Draft Seminar The draft seminar held in February was probably the best weather that any of the Antioch seminars has had. Normally it's been kind of chilly, sometimes foggy but perfect conditions for our cold weather Newfs. Not for their human companions, the sun was up, very few clouds and the temperature comfortable. I want to thank all the instructors and helpers, for without them, it wouldn't have been such a good day. We had quite a few dogs turn out for learning and perfecting their abilities. The instructors (John and Lori, Walt and Marge, Merle and Linda and all the helpers) had plenty of Newfs to teach and learn the techniques of what it takes to be able to do draft work. Be it for a test, working around the house or doing one of the cart pulls that NCNC participates in over the year. After lunch, which was made by Linda, there was the freight haul to walk it all off. All the dogs participated in this walk lead by John Brennan which took in all of the parks features, soccer fields, spectators, a slight hill, which lead to a spectacular view of the area, and baseball fields, then back to the staging area. There are quite a few very good draft dogs learning this trade and hope to see them at the draft tests or cart pulls. Most of all have fun with Newfs and help them enjoy this part of their heritage. If I didn't see you at the March seminar, I hope to see you at the draft test in April or at the water practices that will be starting up in May. Long May Your Newf Shed Rick Kathy Mitchell for donating to NCNC s draft & water tests this year! Potentially Dangerous! In a press release today, the National Institute of Health has announced the discovery of a potentially dangerous substance in the hair of dogs. This substance, called 'amo-bacter canis' has been linked with the following symptoms in female humans:- Reluctance to cook Reluctance to perform housework Reluctance to wear anything but jeans or sweats Reluctance to work except in support of a dog Physical craving for contact with dogs. May be an addiction Beware: If you come in contact with a female human affected by this substance, be prepared to talk about dogs for hours on end. This has been a public service announcement.
