More than just a market MARKET NEWS 23 rd AUGUST 2016 Manager s Mutterings Melton Market continues to be busy. Today s numbers were nearly 5,000 head of sheep and 400 head of cattle. For Sale by Tender 9 original Oil on panel Paintings of horses By the artist Florence Mabel Hollams (1877-1963) Tom had a superb day in the sheep shed with 4,920 going under the hammer. It was a little hectic at certain points so thank you for your patience and co-operation. The day started with a good entry of fat lambs and strong trade, which carried through the shed in all sections. It was a day of firsts for the market with the first ever Pedigree sheep sale being a flock dispersal on behalf of John & Carole Maxwell. Buyers for this travelled from across the UK and the sale was a great success. For full details visit the website www.meltonmowbraymarket.co.uk STORE CATTLE AUCTION TUESDAY 30 th AUGUST 3 Dexter Heifers running with Pedigree Red Dexter bull since 1 st July. TB tested 18 th August This Thursday evening we have arranged for Will Barker of Crescent Vets to give a talk on ram selection, which I hope you are able to find time in your busy harvesting schedule to attend. Prime cattle trade was very pleasing with the prices the best this year so far with all types of cattle fought over. K S Mayfield & Co., from Frisby on the Wreake, Melton Mowbray was my highlight of the day with two of his six Limousin x bullocks realising over 1,600 and the others averaging 1,550. Though top price today went to Oli Black, Somerby, Melton Mowbray for a smart Limousin 233p/Kg., and realising 1,300 and sold to Ozolins Butchers of Saxilby, Lincoln. Ben Shouler in the stores experienced greater numbers with prices keen and topping at 1,350 for continental x bullocks from H Haywood & Son, Harby, Melton Mowbray. I finish today s report with a tinge of sadness after several years hard work and professionalism we have lost our young auctioneer Richard Spendlove. He has been offered the position of assistant manager at Shrewsbury market, which is a great opportunity for him. He goes with Melton Market s blessing, luck and gratitude for all he has given us over the years. Barrie Williamson our new auctioneer who currently sells the baby calves has agreed to take over the baton from Richard. Good luck to Richard Spendlove who leaves Melton Market at the end of August Tim Webster ALAA, Market Manager Email: tw@meltonmowbraymarket.co.uk Tel: 07949 173180 Scalford Road, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Cheques, payment and credit terms As payment technology continues to advance, we will be moving with it and looking to phase out cheques for payment over time. Our BACS payment run now goes out on Wednesdays and with faster payments will now credit your account ahead of any cheque payments made on the day. Not having to wait for cheques should also improve queuing times for you on market days. For those who do not currently receive payments by BACS, please provide your bank account details to the office in person, by phone or by accounts@meltonmowbraymarket.co.uk We are also pleased to confirm that we will now be paying out for all livestock sellers, both stores and fat without delay, whether by cheque on the day or BACS the day after. As far as credit given by the market is concerned, this remains the single biggest risk to the future of livestock markets across the country and a continual drag on management time. We will therefore be changing our standard terms to be payment on the day for both fat and stores with effect from Tuesday 6 September. Those who wish to receive credit from the market will need to agree terms with us and be subject to credit checks and security requirements. Existing arrangements will be honoured for now, but will be subject to adjustment in future. All other terms, including unauthorised credit at 15% plus costs, will remain as they are now. These changes make our overall terms of business more consistent, fairer and more sustainable on behalf of all our valued customers and we trust they will be supported by you all. Should you have any questions, please speak to your auctioneer or Hugh. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT FROM TUESDAY (5 th JULY), A NEW SYSTEM OF ENTRY ONTO THE SITE WILL BE IN OPERATION, TO ENABLE WORKS ON THE NEW CATTLE BUILDING.
