Didn t eat too much did you? This is the time of year when it s really tough on a diet. I guess that s why we all end up making the same New Year s resolution, lose weight. Our Holiday party is coming up real soon - December 3 at Ellen s house. Please give Ellen a call and let her know what you are going to bring. Don t forget to bring a $10 to $15 gift for the gift exchange (Chinese Auction). Continued on Page 6 The next general meeting will be held at during the Annual Holiday Party, Saturday, December 3rd at Ellen Axelrod s home. See flyer for details and directions. The next board meeting will be held January 9 th, 2006 at Perkins Restaurant on South Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa. From the Editor The deadline for submitting information for next month s newsletter is December 26 th.

General Meeting Minutes The General Meeting of the Tampa Bay Terrier Club was held at the East Bay Animal Hospital in Largo on Monday, November 21st, 2005. President Anthony Lopez called the meeting to order at 7:35 pm. There were eighteen club members present. A motion was made and passed to accept the Minutes of the October General Meeting as published in the Terrier Spotlite. Treasurer Linda Lopez reported on the Club s income and expenses for the past month. A motion was made and passed to accept the report. Corresponding Secretary Ellen Axelrod received an e-mail from a dog trainer offering to hold a seminar. She also received Crufts travel information and an updated FAKC events schedule. Committee Reports Membership Lynne Whitney read the application for associate membership from Denise Krause. Her application was published in the November Terrier Spotlite and will be read to the Board of Directors at its next meeting, then voted on at the next General Meeting. Lynne checked on the option of using 3- ring binders for the membership list and Constitution and By-Laws for Club members. The prices she found were quite high. Other methods of binding are being considered. Jim Omodio offered to bind the information into books. Programs - Marj Lorand will try to contact a Czesky breeder to do a presentation after the first of the year. Linda will contact some Rat Terrier owners also, as the Rat Terrier is a new miscellaneous terrier breed. Sunshine Ellen sent a card to Danielle Rogers. Website Linda Lopez will update the website with photos and articles soon. Newsletter Conni Adams received Jerry Bock s How I Got Into Dogs article. Lynn Cone gave copies of the newsletters published by Ray to Danielle to give to her. Historian Joe Whitney reported that he was working on a slide show presentation. He hoped to have it completed by the Holiday Party and will make copies for Club members present. Hospitality Jerry will pass a list at the Holiday party for 2006. Ellen will check the supplies before the party. 2006 Shows Conni asked for volunteers to take charge of various tasks. Judges transportation will be handled when we know what is needed as the Venice Club may be able to assist. Linda will handle Hospitality, Ellen will serve as Chief Ring Steward and catalog advertising, Marj will coordinate trophies, and Steve Adams will be in charge of Grounds. Conni will ask Caryn Stevens to coordinate parking as she is a member of the Venice Club and working at that task for them also. Conni will check with Bill and Paula MacLeod about manning the table for catalog sales. It was decided to do a 50/50 raffle each day, as the Club was making very little profit on the basket raffles. Unfinished Business B-match Lynne reported that Club members present had a great time, the Scottie Club would like to join in again and a little profit was made. Holiday Party Ellen reported that she had not heard from anyone yet as to what they were bringing. She reminded members to bring gifts for the gift exchange as that is usually the highlight of the evening. Polo Shirts Linda distributed polo shirts to those members who had ordered them. They will be available by order for $20.00 plus shipping. An order form will be published in the next newsletter. 2006 Earthdog Trials Linda has worked on the application to hold the 2006 trials. Brenda Swanson will help her find judges. It was suggested that since Joe and Kathy Schrimpf were now judging, it would be nice if they could judge. The trials will be held March 4 th and 5 th at the same location as last year. Sunday February 26 th will be the Fun Day to dig the tunnels and practice with the dogs. The Masters class may not be offered this year as it is more difficult to set-up. General Meeting Minutes Continued from Page 2 State Fair Conni passed around a sign-up schedule for the State Fair Dog Exhibition. Volunteers have been found for a majority of the shifts, but openings are still available. Club members were asked to check with their breed club members to see if any of the breed clubs would like to represent their club for a day. Garage Sale Mik reported that after table rental, the Club made a minimal profit. There were not many shoppers at the event. It was decided that next year we would try to hold a yard sale at a member s home during a time when the whole neighborhood was having a sale. New Business The Board named Conni as head of the nominating committee. Lynn Whitney and Mik Lorand agreed to be on the committee. They will meet at the Holiday Party to determine the slate of officers for 2006. In a discussion of ways to build the Club s treasury, discussion was held on purchasing a covered utility trailer and eliminating the storage space, which is costing the Club nearly $1,000.00 each year. Jerry will head a committee to research the purchase. A workday will be organized to clean out the storage unit. It was also decided to hold another Tom Lams Training Workshop if he is available. Conni will contact him. Other suggestions for fund raising include possibly scheduling a Show and Go at the St. Pete Dog Training Club and sponsoring a professional grooming clinic. T.J. Sharkey, a 5 th grade student at Seminole Elementary is collecting supplies for the SPCA as a community service project. It was decided to publish his wish list in the newsletter and request donations be brought to the Holiday Party for him. The meeting adjourned at 9:15 pm. How We Got Into Dogs By Gloria & Jerry Bock Gloria and I both grew up with Terriers and decided soon after we were married we would have a Terrier as soon as possible. We got our first Wire Fox Terrier in 1968 and today, Wire Fox Terriers four and five, Cam and Cali, run our lives. Three other Wires, Trevor, Tigger and Buc, have ruled the Bock household before them. Our first two Wires, Trevor and Tigger, came from kennels in Pennsylvania, Dry Run in Hollidaysburg and Irene Rhodes FoxGlen in Sharpsburg. I ll speak more about Irene a little later. Our third Wire, Buc, was out of Lillian Mooreman s line in Valrico, FL. All dogs and all pets, the first two were puppies when they came to us while Buc was three when he arrived. All were 100 % Wire Fox but each had a unique personality too! After we lost Buc, I posted an inquiry on several kennel and rescue web sites, hoping to find an older Wire that needed a good home. Two weeks later, I received a phone message from a breeder in Louisiana. The message said they had a dog that may be available and please call if I still wanted a dog. During the follow-up call, the owners, Ric and Nicole Chashoudian, ask me to explain our experience with Wires so they could better determine if we would be appropriate for their dog. When I said our second Wire was from Irene Rhodes s FoxGlen Kennels, Nicole ended the interview with the statement If Irene sold you a dog, you are Wire Fox people and you may have our dog if you want him. Ironically, the sire of the dog being discussed was from Irene s kennel. Two weeks later we drove to Baton Rouge, the weekend before Montgomery 2000, to get Santeric s Campaign Promise II, our Cam. Ric Chashoudian was the dog s owner and we had no idea who Ric was in the dog show world or, for that matter, what the dog show world was all about. We just wanted another Wire Fox for a pet. We did realize Ric must be someone important in dogs because of all the trophies, plaques and awards displayed in his home. By the way, the significance of Montgomery was another topic that would become much more meaningful to us in another year. thought about showing the dog. Answering no, she suggested we may want to think about that when his coat recovered. This was in June 2002. The next January Marsha said Cam s coat was ready to show if we were interested. Knowing absolutely nothing about dog shows, I was a little hesitant at first, but Marsha assured me she would take care of everything and not to worry. Cam s first show was the March 2003 West Palm Beach show. We were bitten by the dog show bug and have been going ever since, traveling literally coast to coast attending dog shows. Cam finished in March of 2005 with a 4 point major win in Ft. Worth, TX In June 2004, we returned from the Great Western Terrier Show with our Cali, Roseland Sunwyre California Dreamin, bred by Christie Almand out of the Brookhaven Line. Christie had cared for Cam in Louisiana before he came to us. Cali is the first bitch we have owned and, needless to say, has taken over the house. Marsha has been showing Cali and she is well along with her conformation. We have been fortunate to meet many wonderful people from all over the country who share our interest in Wire Fox Terriers and dogs in general. It has been, and continues to be, a most enjoyable activity for both of us. In addition to the Tampa Bay Terrier Club, we are members of the Fox Terrier Network, the Wire Fox Terrier Club of the Central States, Fox Terrier Rescue of Florida and are in the process of joining the American Fox Terrier Club. Obedience and Earth Dog Trials may become future endeavors. After struggling with grooming issues for two years, Danielle Rogers, our Dental Hygienist as well as TBTC member, told us about the Tampa Bay Terrier Club. We attended several meetings with the hope of finding someone who could groom Cam. At the 2002 Annual Dinner we met Carole Beattie who suggested we contact Marsha Buchanan. We did and after the first grooming session, Marsha asked if we had ever

From the Editor There s certainly a variety of ways to be a part of the Club right now the Holiday Party, the State Fair, the Earthdog Trials, our Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet, and of course, the July shows. Part of what makes this Club good to belong to is that we do have good participation by a lot of members and lots of different activities to be a part of. Let s look at these opportunities one at a time. The Holiday Party, of course, is just pure fun. It s not too hard to bring a dish to pass and a $10.00 gift. The payback is some really good food and having a riot with old friends, some we don t get the chance to see very often. If you don t have time for anything else, you really must make it to this party! The State Fair Dog Exhibition is a great way to educate people about our terriers and enjoy the Fair at the same time. We always love it and the dogs do too. Although Zoe will hopefully be busy with maternity duty, Emmie will be there, looking for kids faces to lick. She communicates pretty clearly that the Fair is her absolutely favorite activity. There s still some openings so don t hesitate to make a reservation. The Earthdog Trials will be different this year without Joe and Kathy s leadership and your support will be needed. This event contributes more to the Club s income than any other and it s important to continue in that direction. Workers will be needed the week prior to the Trials, to dig the tunnels for the liners. Workers will be needed during the Trials too. We may also need someone to go to Lake Worth to pick up the liners borrowed from the Everglades Terrier Club. Check with Linda Lopez for other jobs available. The date for the Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet hasn t been set yet but someone will be needed to coordinate that event and collect the trophy information and handle all that it involves. This reminds me that the Nominating Committee has been chosen (Mik Lorand, Lynn Whitney and me), so if you would be interested in holding office, let one of us know. We ll be meeting at the Holiday Party to determine the new Slate of Officers. It can be time consuming, but it s also very rewarding to be an officer of the Club. Then there are the July shows. They are a whole lot of work. It takes the efforts of the whole membership to orchestrate these events. But it s what AKC expects and we need to take our turn hosting the shows so there are enough shows for us all to compete in. If that s not enough events to choose from, of course you can always come up with your own. The Club is always looking for things to do. Remember, our purpose is to encourage and promote quality terriers, and there s lots of ways to do it! Happy Tails & have a great Holiday!
