Sheep Fair Report Another 12 months have passed; it is time to report on this year s Shearwell Summer Sheep Fair and the huge success it has become. Every year despite the worries of some we tweak the format always striving to improve the service we provide to both vendor and purchaser. 24411 head were penned 23712 sold grossing just over 2.7 million we must be doing something right! Thursday was the turn of the white face sheep, older ewes and lambs. The day was topped by MF and DM Elkington with their pen of Beltex theaves selling at 200.00, the Beltex and crosses were in general a little harder to sell this year with buyers very selective in their purchasers, other pens sold to 192.00, 185.00 and 178.00 from Messrs Riley. Black Beltex from Bill Rawding sold to 192.00 Average for the section 134.00. Texel s sold to 198.00 from Messrs Lawrence who also sold at 180.00, Michael Cross had a roaring trade with his Texel x Cheviot Mules at 168 and 166, John brown took 166.00 also for Texel x while Garfield Stephens took the prize for best pen of white faced sheep with his Texel x Cheviots at 165.00. A tremendous run of Texel x NC Mules from Harrison bros sold pen after pen at 162.00. Average for the section 145.00. Mules dominated the older ewe section topping at 116.00 from Messrs Rawding, Suffolk x from Rob and Caroline Mole sold to 111.00 followed by George Eaton at 101.00, Messrs Ivory sold their Cheviots at 100.00. Ted Dawson made the trip down from Durham with 300 smart Texel x ewe lambs to take 95.00 on four occasions. Stuart McIntosh sold his Suffolk x at 86.00. Nearly all the store lambs on offer were long keepers with no pens of meat on offer. Gerald Levinge sold Texel x at 68.00 and 66.00, Chris Tucker took 65.00 for Charollais x followed by Bob Tofield at 64.50 along with Messrs Swerling and Mrs Brock Liam Roberts brought 200 Suffolk x down from Ruthin to sell at 64.00 and 63.00. Messrs Ivory sold their run of Beltex x to 63.50 while Mark Britten topped the Cheviots at 60.00. Day two commenced with the best part of 8000 Suffolk x theaves and doubles, Eddy Bullman kept the top spot winning the best pen and selling them for 195.00, Rob and Caroline Mole sold at 148 twice and 146 twice with Peter and David Morris selling the first pen in the ring at 142.00. Trade was consistent throughout to average 124.00. Nearly 8000 mules found a more difficult trade for the run dry sheep bought as runners last year, those that had time spent on presentation found a definite premium. Henry Tustian took the best run or 60 or more to sell to 176.00, 170.00 and 165.00 twice. Richard Haynes won the best pen with dry sheep and went one better than henry to top the section at 178.00. Messrs Hunt sold a marvellous run of 700 had lambs to a top of 152.00. Another notable run came from Thorncombe Park Estate 140.00. Double theaves always create great interest selling to 137.00 from Conrad Lester. Average for the section was 123.50. Our thanks tour judges Sid Hockenhull for judging the White face and Suffolk x and Dan Phipps for judging the Mules. Rams The move to a Thursday sale proved a great success with an 85% clearance of rams up by 20% on the year. The annual show of Pedigree Beltex was won by M/s A & R Livestock with a 2 shear ewe selling at 900.00. Shearling ewes sold to 340.00, M/s A & R Livestock also took the Ram Lamb class selling at 850.00. M/s VJ & ML Roots took male champion with their Shearling at 720.00.
