Cooperative Extension of Cumberland County www.njaes.rutgers.edu/extension Extension Education Center 291 Morton Avenue Phone: 856-451-2800 LIVESTOCK NEWS June 10, 2014 Livestock News prepared by Cyndy Hetzell, 4-H Program Assistant Spring is here and I hope all 4-H members are getting their animals ready for the Fair. Don t forget we need livestock registration cards handed in on your animals with pictures as soon as possible. Don t forget to worm your sheep and pigs. Check the withholding time on the product you are using to make sure it is not too late.it is easier before they get too big but you will notice a big difference in their growth after you do. Hope you all have fun with your project. Keep good records so you can post your rate of gain with your animal in the barn (amount of feed per pound of gained weight). Also, if your animals don t have lots of water they won t eat and if they don t eat they don t gain weight efficiently so be sure to check them everyday. Livestock Fair Clean-up Thursday, June 30, 6:00 PM All 4-H livestock, goat and poultry members are asked to come out and help with fair cleanup. This is a mandatory clean-up. Bring your gloves, rakes, shovels, tarps and wheel-barrows and help spruce up the livestock building and tent area. A couple of hours with a lot of hands will get the job done and we always have a little fun in the process. Put the date on your calendar! Hope to see you there! Did you Give Your Presentation? Remember to participate in the Cumberland County Fair you must give a presentation. OVER

Livestock Vet Check Monday, June 26th Dr. Tanya Hanyi will be doing our annual livestock vet check on Monday, June 26th to give out health certificates to allow animals to come to the fair. Please have your animals named and have someone on hand to catch your sheep for ear tagging. You will get an assigned time closer to the date. Livestock Fair Schedule Sunday, July 6 10:00 AM-1:00 PM Animal weigh in Monday, July 7 5:45 PM Parade of Clubs Tuesday, July 8 4:00 PM Sheep Show Wednesday, July 9 7:00 PM Beef & Hog Show (pigs will be washed, Wednesday AM) Monday, July 7 7:30 PM Goat Show Wednesday, July 9 12:00 Noon Poultry Show Thursday, July 10 8:00 PM County Livestock Auction Friday, July 11 8:00 PM Round Robin Livestock Auction Notes Very Important! Now is the time to start contacting buyers for the livestock auction. Write potential buyers letters and ask them to come bid. Talk to people in person and tell them the benefits of buying hand raised pork and lamb. The personal visit always works best. Remember you need more buyers than animals so they have someone to bid against. They cannot bid against themselves so you need more than one person wanting to buy your animal if you want to get a good price. It is YOUR responsibility to find buyers for your animals. Your leader has 4-H letterhead to use to send your letters out. Also, please give the 4-H office the name and address of any buyers you contacted so we can send them passes to get into the fair free. Auction Night *Be sure to wear black pants, boots and your white 4-H shirt. Please be waiting to greet buyers by 7:45 PM. *Immediately after your animal is sold find your buyers, shake their hand and say Thank you. Everyone must stay in the Livestock barn until all animals are sold and pictures are taken. DO NOT LEAVE THE BARN! We are asking a couple of 4-H members to do a presentation before this auction to explain the importance of the auction, the cost of raising animals and effort involved in the project.

Help In The Barn! It is very important to have help in the livestock and poultry/goat barn to answer questions and talk to fair visitors. The Livestock, Goat & Poultry Clubs are YOUR clubs. Not your parents and not your leaders. Fair goers want to see the 4-H members responsible for raising the quality animals we are showing and selling so they can decide if they would like their children involved. You are our advertisement! Be visible! Remember the ice cream social is Friday night at 9:30 PM. Be there! Please fill out fair registration forms and return to the 4-H office by June 25th so we can plan on animal pens and space. COW CHIP Bingo! We will be holding a Cow Chip Bingo on Monday July 7, 2014 at 8 PM and Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 4 PM in the 4-H Livestock Barn as a fundraiser. Please get the word out. It will be fun to see whose block the chip falls in. Lollipop tickets will be available soon. We need to get them all sold! Cumberland County 4-H
