KUMAR)

Salient Scientific Contributions for Growth and Development of Farmers Annexure - I a) Migratory Sheep Husbandry: Dr. R. Kumar has carried out pioneering work in the field of Nomadic Pastoralism. Since year the local Gaddi tribe is thriving on rearing of migratory Gaddi Goat and Gaddi Sheep, which generally migrates to alpine pastures during summer and returns to base camp/mid hills during winter season. But no scientific studies were carried out earlier, in 1995 onwards our team carried out extensive research on suitability of breed of animals for this migratory rearing, since over years, exotic breeds had been introduced in the state. We recommended the rearing of Gaddi Crossed instead of pure exotic Rambouillet or Polwarth on the basis of our studies on adaptation of these animals to high altitude climatic conditions and productive potential. This achievement is certainly going to contribute to the state economy to greater extent through increased wool and meat production. b) Improvement of feed resources and nutrient utilization for raising animal production Under this research project which is in operation, my team had been able to establish the missing link between farmers and extension worker. With a aim to find out mineral which is hampering the production and reproduction in various species of livestock in the state, on being contacted personally the dairy farmers in different parts of state were found ignorant of many important steps, which needs to be followed for improved dairy practices. Farmers are being advised about lacunae s in their dairy farming practices and apprised of needful to be done. After identifying the macro and micro minerals deficiency as well as excess, strategic mineral supplementation has been done; resulting is improved animal reproductive health as well as significant increase in milk yield. At one place i.e. Bhunter animal owners, themselves reported increase in milk yield varying from one to one and half liter per day per animal. This is certainly going to have a significant impact on economics of poor farmers.

c) Improvement of Migratory Buffalo Production Another area of research was on the improvement of livestock reared by Gujjars, another nomadic tribe, which thrives on milk of buffaloes reared by them. Large number of Gujjar families were selected in this study and they were taught various methods of improvement of their livestock, besides increasing milk production through feeding of mineral mixture and UMB blocks under NATP (ICAR) research project. d) Establishing the blood biochemical profile of indigenous livestock of Himachal Pradesh There are many types of livestock which contribute significantly to the economy of state silently like Yak, Gaddi Sheep, Gaddi Goat, Local Cattle and Spiti Horses. Diagnosis of the diseases in these animals was difficult in absence of basal values of various blood biochemical and mineral parameters. I have been working for last 15 years to establish the basal values of hematological, blood biochemical and mineral profiles of these species under different physiological conditions, which has certainly helped in the process of disease diagnosis in these species.
