MEASURING YOUR DOG FOR AN URBAN TRAIL OR HYBRID PERFORMANCE HARNESS Before you Start CLICK HERE to understand which harness is best for your dog. Use a soft measuring tape. Be sure the dog is standing square and level with head up and legs square. Be sure the dog's back is not hunched or roached. Measure the dog, not the fur. Weigh your dog if possible. Proper measurements are very important!! Measure twice to be sure! DO NOT pull the tape tight or the measurement will be short. If you have ANY questions about measuring, feel free to email or call Dave Ryan at 610-584-6696. The urban trails harness has an adjustable girth. The collar is not adjustable. The strap that goes between the legs can be off an inch or two without affecting the performance of the dog. Note: When you use the harness, adjust the girth for a tight fit. It must hold the collar in place when load is placed on the D ring. be tight enough to 1. Neck: from the top of the breastbone in the front of the dog (big bone that sticks out between the front legs in front of the dog) to the base of the neck where it joins the spine- NOT all the way back to between the shoulder blades, but in front of the shoulder blades at the base of the neck... Take from the top of the breastbone to the base of the neck on ONE side and double it...the average medium build dog will be around "22" (2 x 11) 2. Mid-Rib: Start at the top of the breastbone again, go between the front legs to the end of the sternum...maybe like "13" inches... 1 / 5
3. Circumference (girth): All the way around the dog at the mid-rib point where the sternum ends and the ribs split apart. The girth strap holds the collar in place. It needs to rest slightly aft of the deep part of the chest in order to keep the harness from sliding forward. In other words, the chest bones hold it in place. 4. Belly: All the way around the dog where the ribs end. This is for the belly band. Measuring: Study the picture below, and write down each measurement on a scrap of paper -- then measure again! If the numbers do not match closely, keep measuring until you get consistent measurements. When ordering harnesses, please provide all of this information of the PayPal order form: in the measurements field 1. Neck 2. Mid-Rib - length of sternum 3. Around Dog - girth 4. Belly 5. Generally, if you multiply the neck size by 1.25 you should be close to the circumference size. This varies widely depending on build/weight of dog. Remember to measure the WIDEST place on the dog, not necessarily where you think the harness will end up sitting on the dog. 5 / 5
