WEEKLY POULTRY NEWS 15 th SEPTEMBER 2017 THE POULTRY ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA INTERNATIONAL NEWS ISRAEL BROILER FLOCK SLAUGHTERED DUE TO NEWCASTLE DISEASE For the first time since August, there has been a new outbreak of Newcastle disease. The veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 13 September to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).The report describes an outbreak of Newcastle disease in Ashkelon in the southern region, Hadarom. The outbreak, which started on 10 September, affected a flock of 17,000 six-and-a-half-week-old broilers, just before marketing. Around 2,000 of them showed symptoms, 600 died and 16,400 have been destroyed. Source: http://www.thepoultrysite.com LOCAL NEWS ROSS BREEDERS FOCUS THEIR TRAININGS TO NORTHERN and MUCHINGA. After successful poultry trainings on the Copperbelt and Eastern Provinces, Ross Breeders now focused their attention to train poultry farmers in the in Northern and Muchinga Province. The trainings will be conducted in Mkushi, Serenje, Mpika and Kasama. The trainings will focus on general poultry management, vaccination feeding and other factors influencing the profitability of the broiler business. Further issues to be discussed will include biosecurity and avian influenza. The Poultry Association of Zambia applauds Ross Breeders for the efforts being undertaken to improve the skills of the smallholder s poultry farmers in Zambia. The Association further appeals to the farmers in general to take advantage of these trainings and ensure that they get the skills on poultry farming. Source: PAZ KEY ISSUES TO TAKE NOTE OF- AVIAN INFLUENZA The rate at which the influenza is spreading is a source of worry. South Africa just reported the H5N8 influenza in Mpumalanga area. To contain this disease, all the poultry farmers are being urged to undertake the following measures. 1. Report any abnormal deaths of chickens and guinea fowls or any other birds to the nearest Veterinary Services Office 2. Ensure that you avoid interactions between the domestic wild birds and animals 3. Ensure that you practice high level of biosecurity and hygiene which include preventing any contacts with domesticated or wild animals, mechanical vectors or fomites For any suspected mortalities please contact any nearest department under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. ZAMBIA'S KWACHA CONTINUES TO EXHIBIT SOME LOSSES Kwacha is expected to remain under pressure next week on the back of low hard currency supply in the market. Kwacha is now trading around 9.34 per dollar from 9.21 last week. However, it is also anticipated that as the corporate make their tax obligations, this might cushion the value of the local currency as supply will stabilize. The local currency has lost a bit of its value owing to demand coming largely from the oil sector which has seen off the currency off its one month range of zmk8.90 and zmk9.5 that characterized the local currency in the month of August. Source: Bank of Zambia AVERAGE DOC PRICES The average day old chick s prices have posted an upward price adjustment. The price for the day-old broiler chicks are now trading at ZMK 5.32 compared with the ZMK 5.04per day old chick obtained three weeks ago. The lowest DOC is still trading at ZMK5 while the highest is ZMK5.5.The pullets from Quantum Foods are still trading at ZMK 8.3. The supply of DoC is very stable in all the districts sampled. The graph below shows the national average price trend for the broiler day old chicks. Please note also that the prices of day old chick may differ depending on a number of factors such as the distance and the source agent supplying the day old chicks.
Source: Poultry Association of Zambia NATIONAL RETAIL AVERAGE LIVE BIRD The national average prices for live chickens in the open market showed some movements during the course of the week. The Live broiler bird prices are averaging ZMK 35.48 compared with ZMK35.54 obtained last week. This represents a marginal reduction of about ZMK0.04.The X layer prices showed some in prices in the las two weeks breaking the over the prices of broilers for the first time in three years. The price is now trading at ZMK35.71 compared with the ZMK 35.35 recorded two weeks ago.on the other hand, the village chicken prices remained unchanged and still trading at ZMK 55.30 which is the same price as last week.
AVERAGE WHOLE DRESSED CHICKEN PRICES REMAINS STABLE The prices in the frozen chciken market have remained stable during the course of the week despite some of the processors continuing with price promotions.the average price for the whole frozen chicken in Lusaka is still trading at about ZMK 26.10 per kg same price as the last few weeks. The chicken sizes are ranging between 1.5kg to 1.9kg in different stores. Please note that the prices are obtained from Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Zambeef, Melisa supermarket and Cheers Stores. Different outlets have different pricing models hence the figures displayed is an average prices for all the sampled chainstores. Source: Poultry Association of Zambia AVERAGE PRICES FOR THE POINT OF LAY REMAINS UNCHANGED There have been some downward movements in the prices of point of lay. The average prices have been maintained between ZMK 68 to ZMK 72 per bird. Different suppliers are offering different incentives to their customers. A 5% discounts is being offered for all PAZ members who purchases 1000 and above point of lay at Yielding Tree. Rosedale Farm in Lusaka is also offering competitive prices for the point of lay and discounts for big volumes. For those on the copperbelt, quantum foods has point of lay for sale at competitive prices For the beginners and are interested in getting battery cages, cage price ranges between ZMK2700 to ZMK8000 depending on the capacity and also the sources of the cages.
NATIONAL RETAIL AVERAGE EGG PRICES REMAINS UNCHANGED The retail egg prices in the open market showed some reductions, averaging ZMK 26.89 per tray, compared with the ZMK 26.93 obtained last week. There is some movement also on the farm gate price, now averaging ZMK24.20 per tray compared with the ZMK 42.20 recorded in the same period. The delivery or farm gate price at Soweto market has not changed, still averaging between ZMK23 to ZMK24 per tray for large eggs, and medium eggs while smaller eggs are trading between ZMK18 and ZMK20 farm gate. Retail egg prices at Soweto are also trading between ZMK 25 to ZMK26. Retail prices in some Chainstores have also been maintained, averaging between ZMK24 to ZMK36 per tray of 30 eggs depending on the supplier and packaging. Broiler starter is now trading at ZMK 214.5 compared with ZMK 213.32 recorded last week. This represents a 4% reduction. Grower is averaging ZMK 197.88 compared with ZMK 206.25 obtained last week which also represents a 4% reuction.broiler finisher is trading at ZMK192.25 compared with the ZMK 202.00 recorded last week, which represents a 5% reduction.there are also moverments on the layers feed with pullet starter trading at ZMK161 compared with the ZMK 172 recorded in the past four weeks which represents a 6% reduction.
Pulet grower is trading at ZMk 147.5 compared with ZMk164 for last week representing a 10% reduction. Pullet developer posted a 7% reduction from ZMK 157.64 to ZMk 146 while layers mash posted a 5% reduction from ZMk161 to ZMK 153.4.
