To help protect your investment, Farm Bureau Financial Services has an animal mortality insurance policy that 4-H/FFA members can purchase. Animal mortality insurance is tailored to short-term livestock ownership. You can insure each animal for its cost or value in the event of an unexpected death. For more information, contact the Extension Office. May 2 Deadline May 2 is a very important deadline date. Normally it is May 1, but this that is a Sunday, so these

deadlines talked about below are May 2 this only. Enrollment Deadline and Drop/Add Deadline: This is the last day you can drop or add projects for the so make sure you are in the projects you want. You can do this through 4HOnline or call the Extension Office and we can do it for you. If you are trying to do this in 4HOnline, after May 2 it will not allow you to make any changes. If you are wanting to exhibit at the county fair this, one needs to be enrolled by May 2 as well. So if you have club members or friends that have not completed their enrollment, remind them of this deadline. Once again, if anyone needs help with 4HOnline, please contact me and I will try to help you out. Horse ID s Due in the Extension Office: To exhibit at the 4-H Horse Show, a member must properly identify his or her owned or leased horse project on the 4-H Identification Certificate. For horses that have been identified in previous s, new certificates do not need to be completed. Just bring in your previous certificates for me to sign. Any new horses will need to be properly identified. Market Beef State Nominations: Nominations and paperwork that is postmarked by May 2 will be accepted this. For more information about nominations, refer to the nominations article elsewhere in this newsletter. Hog/Sheep/Goat Weigh In and Tag Day The Longton Fairgrounds will be the site of this s Hog, Lamb and Goat tag and weigh-in. All hogs, lambs and goats must be weighed and tagged in order to be shown and sold at the county fair. This you will have two opportunities to weigh and tag your animals. Animals can be weighed & tagged Friday, May 6 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. or Saturday, May 7 from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Members may weigh and tag a maximum of 6 market animals per species. However, you may 3 only show two of each species at the fair. Tags are $3/head. When selecting your hog, lamb or goat, keep in mind the weight and rate of gain requirements that must be met in order to sell at the premium sale. Market hogs must weigh 220-320 pounds and gain a minimum of 1.1 lbs/day. Market lambs must weigh 100-155 pounds and gain a minimum of 0.25 lbs/day. Meat goats must weigh 60-120 pounds and gain a minimum of 0.20 lbs/day. There are 89 or 88 days between spring weigh-in and fair weigh-in. Weight projection charts are available for each species on the Rolling Prairie website at http://www.rollingprairie.kstate.edu/elkcounty4h/livestock/index.html If you are going to be showing at spring shows before May 6 and need animal(s) tagged, let me know and we can get your animal(s) tagged. However, you will still need to bring them to one of the weigh in dates to record an official weight. Livestock Breeding Projects Tagged/Identified in 2016 If you wish to exhibit a breeding animal of any species at the 2016 Elk County Fair, you must be enrolled in the breeding project for that respective species by May 2. In addition, all breeding livestock to be exhibited at the 2016 Elk County Fair will need to be tagged at the regular county tagging. The only exception will be for registered purebred livestock that will not have to have a county tag, if they have proper tattoos and registration papers. In this case, ownership of these animals must be verified by registration papers showing immediate family ownership by May 2 for beef or May 6 for sheep, hog and goats. This will be done by simply bringing registration papers to the Extension Office and we will make a copy of the papers. To clarify, if you have a commercial (nonregistered) breeding animal, bring them to the

spring weigh-ins and we will put a county tag in them. If you have a registered breeding animal and do not want a county tag in them, bring your registration papers to the office by May 2 for beef or May 6 for sheep, hogs or goats to verify ownership. This does not apply to bucket calves, dairy goats or dairy cattle. Spring Shows, Sales, Judging, and Other Contests Many of these events are starting to occur and the Extension Office is receiving information about these. I am including on the Rolling Prairie website a list of these as I receive them. Here is the link to these: http://www.rollingprairie.kstate.edu/elkcounty4h/springshows/index.html For more information about any of these, contact the Extension Office. Some of these have a preregistration deadline, so do not wait until the last minute to inquire about a contest or event. Check back often as the list will be updated as notices are received at the office. State Livestock Nominations Listed below is information about the 2016 State Livestock Nominations: Animals eligible for KJLS or KSF will need an EID ear tag placed in the ear of the animal by an Agent or in the presence of the Agent. This is so all tags can be accounted for. Make arrangements with Richard to tag and nominate animals if you have animals that were not tagged at the county spring dates. The exception to this is purebred breeding females that have registration papers do not have to be nominated. DNA hair samples are required for each nominated animal for ALL species. 4 Ear notch information will be required for swine nominations as well as the DNA sample. Scrapie tag numbers will be required for sheep and goat nominations as well as the DNA sample. Declaration forms, nomination forms are required as well. These must be signed by the parent/legal guardian, and Extension Agent. Nomination deadlines for all species are POSTMARK dates. Certified mail is highly encouraged for sending nominations to KSU. Nomination dates are: May 2 - Market Beef; - Market Hogs, Commercial Gilts, Market Sheep, Commercial Ewes, Commercial Heifers, and ALL meat goats. Nomination cost is.00/animal. All swine exhibitors must submit a valid Youth PQA Plus certification number by. A livestock nomination is NOT AN ENTRY for the Kansas State Fair or Kansas Junior Livestock Show. All forms (except DNA envelopes) and a Kansas Youth Livestock State Nomination Process Rookie Guide are available at: http://www.asi.kstate.edu/students-and-programs/youthprograms/nominated-livestock/ When nominating animals, keep this in mind. This information is from the Kansas 4-H Policy document: Any 4-H exhibit sold at public auction or by private contract is not eligible to be exhibited at the Kansas State Fair or Kansas Junior Livestock Show. Public auction includes: premium sale, ribbon auction, or similar event. If the project is sold, regardless of ownership changes, on the date of the transaction the 4-H member has given up the right to exhibit that specific animal or product in the future. In the case of livestock, market animals sold are ineligible to be shown as breeding animals in the future. Non-livestock exhibits (perishable foods, photographs, etc.) may be reproduced for the Kansas State Fair.

Enclosed in the newsletter is a page of the livestock nominations and entry deadlines chart with all the relevant information for each species. Kansas 4-H Sewing Camp Registration Open. May 31 - June 3. $195. 13-18 old members. http://www.kansas4-h.org/eventsactivities/camping/specialty-camps/clothingcamp/index.html 4-H Camp June 24-27 For members 3 rd grade through 7 th grade complete. $185 + transportation costs (transportation costs not determined until after registrations are due and how many that are going to camp is known.) Registration is due May 23 with a $50 nonrefundable deposit. Counselor applications due May 23. Members that are freshman complete and older are eligible to apply to be a camp counselor. However, priority is given to sophomore complete and older. Counselors lead groups of 8-9 campers. Being a counselor is a great experience and a tremendous challenge. It is also a leadership opportunity that is not often available. As a counselor, your camp fees are paid for. Registration forms and counselor applications are available at the Extension Office or on the Rolling Prairie website at the following link: http://www.rollingprairie.kstate.edu/elkcounty4h/activities/index.html Horse Project and Achievement Levels The Kansas 4-H Horse Standard of Excellence consists of four achievement levels (I, II, III, IV), each of which contains three sections: knowledge, leadership, and horsemanship skill attainment. Once 5 participants successfully pass the required sections, they will receive certification of achievements and be granted the right to advance to the next level. Participants that fail either the written exam, or skill test, can retake the exam at any time. Horse Project members must pass the written and leadership requirements prior to taking the skills test. Members that start the project without completing the skill section can later complete that section. However, they cannot enter a higher level skill section without going back and completing skill sections previously skipped. New for 2016, only Achievement Level 1 will be required by 4-H members ages 9-18 wanting to participate at the District and/or State horse show. This must be done prior to the entry deadlines for the District show. The Southeast Area District Horse Show is July 7 at Parsons. Entry deadline is. If interested in this, contact Richard well in advance to allow you time to get the tests completed. 4-H Campference 4-H Campference is for youth ages 12-14 as of January 1, 2016 and will be held June 24-27 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the camp activities that Rock Springs has to offer. This a great transitional opportunity, as these tweeners go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. 4-H Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program and how to better interact with others. Registration is now open on the State 4-H website. Space will be limited, so register early. The past two s, Campference was full in April
