Thank you to everyone who saw the need and decided to run. Congratulations to those who received the most votes in the contested races and a Giant Thank you to those who did not receive the most votes. Standing up and saying I want to help and then not getting enough votes for the desired office can be tough to swallow. I hope that the candidates realize that simply by running for an office, they have taken a huge step in the right direction and this club is very grateful for their efforts. It will be wonderful to have a full board of officers and directors again. This being said, the bar has been set pretty high for some of the new officers. Lori Clark, for example has followed in a long tradition of outstanding club secretaries. She will be missed by me, and the entire board. I am sure, however, that Robin Greenslade will put fourth the same enthusiasm and professionalism she demonstrated as AKC Delegate.

Message From the President (continued) Peggy Shackelford will have a lot of work to do to rebuild the Western Region into the cohesive community of Giant Schnauzer owners it once was, but I believe she has the desire and the ability to do this. Cornelia King will replace Greg Reyna in the South. The South had an OUTSTANDING National Specialty in Dallas in July 2012 and if Cornelia can continue to inspire and guide the amazing group of members in the South, we may be seeing more Specialty Shows of that caliber in the South. I believe she can. Thank you again Lori Clark, Greg Reyna and Mike Rutkas for your service to this club. Thank you Jennifer Tennison and Meg McGee for stepping up when needed and thank you also, to Robin Greenslade, Cornelia King and Peggy Shackelford as your new opportunities are about to begin with the Giant Schnauzer Club of America. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, we have much for which we should be grateful. Member Profile Name and Location Terri Sibert, Canonsburg, PA Occupation Medical Practice Manager Your Giants names Ingebar s Always Faithful UD RE CGC TT Greta Classic Ruger V Easentaigh CGC Ruger How long have you been a GSCA member? 6 years How did you get into Giants? My husband and I discussed the qualities we wanted in a dog and did thorough research on various breeds. I happened upon a book on the Giant Schnauzer and we knew we found a match. The breed was everything we wanted as an excellent family companion and protector. Do you have other pets in addition to Giants? We have a 10 year old Boston Terrier, Rowdy, who has a Napoleon complex and loves to cause trouble! What do you do with your Giant? I love the sport of competitive obedience. The bond you form with your dog is incredible! Greta just earned her UD so I have retired her from obedience; however, she is working toward her AKC tracking title and is being handled by my husband Rich. I have been training my 16 month old Ruger for his Novice title and also training some of the Open exercises. Do you have other hobbies besides dogs? I love to cook and try new recipes and am kind of a Food Network junkie! I also like to work in my flower beds in the spring and summer. This spring we are planting our first vegetable garden. What are your dog(s) favorite treats and/or toys? Greta has great play and chase drives and she has always loved chasing and retrieving Frisbees and tennis balls. A small toss of the Frisbee is her motivator and reward for working. Ruger loves the game of tug and I use his tug drive for play as well as page 3

Member Profile (continued) a reward. He will tug with anything and has taught Greta the game too! Greta and Ruger both love freeze dried tripe as a reward or treat and they also love canned tripe as a food topping. The natural omega s have given them great coats and healthy skin. Twice a week they enjoy a special treat of Primal raw beef marrow bones. What was the last dog-related thing you read? Instead of reading dog related materials I have been watching a lot of the Leerburg/Michael Ellis videos. Currently I am watching the Michael Ellis video called Focused Heeling. I enjoy watching a talented handler work a dog and I find it is easier for me to understand training concepts by seeing rather than reading. If there is a club member that you would like to see featured in the Member Profile column, please send their name and contact information to Lori Clark at secretary@giantschnauzer clubofamerica.com. What is the best advice anyone ever gave you about Giants? My first trainer always told me to trust your dog and interestingly, every trainer I have worked with has given me the same advice. There are instincts our canines have that we will never understand. My husband is now appreciating this advice when tracking with Greta! Anything else you d like to add. Regardless of what you have chosen as your activity with your Giant, my only advice is to enjoy the journey and cherish every moment, especially the frustrating ones for they are what help us to become better handlers and trainers. The GSCA 2012 Midwest Specialty will be held in conjunction with the Starved Rock Kennel Club December 6th & 7th at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton, IL. Judges will be Mrs. Christina Hubbell on Thursday and Mrs. Michele L. Billings on Friday. Shadow boxed trophies offered to Best of Breed, Best of Winners, and Best of Opposite Sex, and there will be additional trophies offered in regular classes for Giants also. Each exhibitor (not entry) will receive a hospitality bag at the head table when you check in. There will also be a complimentary lite breakfast each day. Two Special Attractions (all breed) will be offered at this show - "Best Puppy" competition on Thursday, and "Best Bred By Exhibitor" competition on Friday. The shows are up 315 entries this year. Grooming will be tight, but there are still reserved spaces available until December 3 rd. Grooming fees are $15/5 x 10 and $25/10 x 10. If you plan on attending and would like to reserve a grooming space, please contact Shelia Lietz, atsklietz@gmail.com ASAP, as these spaces are filling quickly. Please write "GSCA" on your reserved grooming form. page 4

Nominated Awards With the National Specialty being held in May next year, it is time to start considering whom you would like to nominate for the following awards: OUTSTANDING GIANT SCHNAUZER AWARD Presented to the individual Giant Schnauzer who through it s outstanding conformation and intelligence has accomplished a feat that is first for the breed, or an outstanding achievement, which has brought recognition and honor to the breed. LADY FERGIE AWARD Presented to the individual Giant Schnauzer whose actions and outstanding achievement in public and/ or community service has brought recognition and honor to the breed. THE PRINZ WILHELM (WILLIE AWARD) Presented to the individual Giant Schnauzer whose actions and outstanding achievement in public and/ or community service has brought recognition and honor to the breed. DEDICATED SERVICE AWARD Presented to up to 3 GSCA members who have made substantial or extraordinary effort to further the best interests of the Club and our breed. AKC SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD (Now the Kathie Anderson Sportsmanship Award) In the American Kennel Club s ongoing efforts to recognize and celebrate its volunteer club members, The AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award program was established in 2006 to provide each member club with an AKC Medallion to award to one of its own on a yearly basis. This award honors those individuals who deserve special recognition that have made a difference in the sport of purebred dogs, embodied the AKC Code of Sportsmanship, and have been an active and valued member of an AKC member club. Medallions are awarded solely at the club s discretion. GSCA has, in the past, determined the recipient by membership nomination followed by Board approval. This wonderful pumpkin carving is by club member, Keith Mantell, of his Giant. He does one every year. We have some very talented members in our club. Great job Keith! Membership Dues The 2013 Membership dues have been mailed out. They are due by December 31, 2012. If you have not received yours, please contact Jennifer Tennison, jeniteni@yahoo.com. 2015 National Specialty It is time to start thinking about a location and planning for the 2015 National Specialty. If you are interested in hosting it in your region, please contact Kim Demchak and your Region Director. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! page 5

Telephonic Board Meeting Minutes ~ October 9, 2012 (continued) Howard received an email from Lisa Armitage stating that she has heard from several sources that the dollar amounts we are seeing on these reports are not accurate and that the Club balance is much less. The board is taking this matter seriously and will follow up. If you have verifiable evidence on the issue of financial impropriety, please contact the board. If you have any questions/concerns regarding financial statements, please contact Howard directly. Report from the Committees: AKC Delegate Report: Effective January 1 st, 2013, the AKC voted to approve a three- point major for the dog designated Reserve Winners Dog and the bitch designated Reserve Winners Bitch, provided there are double the number of dogs/bitches, entered and shown (not excused for any reason) required for a five- point major. The club can designate one national specialty per year to award the three- point reserve major. Points do not cross over, thus there would need to be 14 bitches and 14 dogs for our 2013 National in Missouri. Unfinished Business: Doris Redmann Fund Bernie emailed the board members that were in office during the time the Doris Redmann Fund was created to determine the original objectives. The fund was in existence before Doris Redmann passed away and was renamed the Doris Redmann Fund after her passing. The board would like to disperse some of these funds in a manner in line with the Funds original objectives within the current restrictions. Due to liability insurance prohibitions, the club cannot actively do/fund rescue as it did at the Funds inception. We believe the club can donate the money to rescue organizations. If this is the only use then the Club may discontinue taking donations as members can donate directly and receive a tax deduction which they cannot do for donations to GSCA. Bernie made a motion to distribute $1500 from the Doris Redmann Fund to each HT-Z Giant Schnauzer Rescue and Valley of the Sun Giant Schnauzer Rescue. Howard seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. (10912.4 Doris Redmann Fund distribution) Meet the Breeds We will have a booth at the Meet the Breeds on October 20th, at the Javits Center in New York. We need volunteers. Doug will email the members in the Eastern region to see if anyone is available to help. New Business: Grooming Manual We are down to a handful of copies of the Grooming Manual. Chris Lietzau is revising the manual to include un- cropped dogs, but this is not ready for publication yet. To tie us over until the completion of the new manual, Bill Combs checked into having 50 copies printed at a cost of $250. Howard made a motion to have Bill Combs print 50 more Grooming Manuals in the amount of $250. Kim seconded. Motion passed unanimously. (10912.5 Grooming manual reprint) Howard made a motion to increase the cost of the Grooming Manual to $8 to help cover the cost of shipping. Mike seconded. Motion passed unanimously. (10912.6 Grooming manual cost increase) AKC 4-6 Month Puppy Class The 4-6 Month Puppy Class will be offered at the 2013 National on Friday and Saturday, before Sweepstakes. Adjournment: Mike made a motion to adjourn. Doug seconded. Motion passed and meeting adjourned at 10:35 pm EDT. (10912.7 Meeting adjournment) Respectfully submitted, Lori Clark GSCA Secretary page 8
