THE KENNEL CLUB IS THE LEADING AUTHORITY IN DOGS AND DOG OWNERSHIP IN THE UK, WITH ITS PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE BEING THE GENERAL IMPROVEMENT OF DOGS. The Kennel Club currently registers 1,800 Canine Societies, although it is a well-established fact that there are many more training organisations working with dogs in the UK. To further promote the Good Citizen Dog Scheme, The Kennel Club extends its relationship with other dog-training organisations who would like to incorporate the Scheme syllabus as part of their training programme. There are currently over 700 Listed Status Organisations working with the Scheme.

Permission to host Good Citizen Dog Scheme training courses and subsequent testing sessions, which includes FREE Good Citizen Dog Scheme course materials including certificates. There is a small cost for rosettes. A free copy of the Good Citizen Dog Scheme Guidelines (RRP 3.00). Certificate of Status. Publicity through The Kennel Club database, enquires and website. Inclusion in publicity to veterinary practices and other canine-related organisations. Minimal club administration i.e. no need to submit annual accounts, list of club members, or have a committee structure. Free advice provided from The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme office. Regular Scheme news and updates through a newsletter. Compliance to a Kennel Club Code of Practice for Dog Training Clubs. Scheme designed to complement existing training courses. Training courses are straightforward, noncompetitive and practical. Course teaches the basics in dog ownership. Open to all dogs, regardless of age or breed. Assistance in finding a Good Citizen Dog Scheme test examiner. Access to information regarding Scheme seminars and examiner training courses. Advice on running a professional service. All for an annual fee of only 50.00
HOW CAN I APPLY? Applications must include two supporting references. The first letter confirming the applicant(s) s training experience written and signed by an experienced dog trainer; i.e. Kennel Club Championship Judge, Member of the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers, Kennel Club Accredited Instructor in Dog Training and Behaviour or similar status. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME LISTED STATUS? l Non-Kennel Club registered dog-training clubs l Veterinary Practices l Welfare Centres and registered charities l Further Education Centres l Individual dog-training instructors Whether you are a sole trainer or have a group of instructors at your dog-training club, provided you are prepared to host regular Good Citizen Dog Scheme Training Courses and subsequent testing sessions, The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme Listed Status is an ideal way of supporting responsible dog ownership as part of a nationally recognised syllabus. The Listed Status Scheme does not require annual accounts or other related committee paperwork. 1. Experience Reference A minimum of three years experience is required. This reference must include details of the applicant s training abilities, how long they have been training dogs for and in what areas, how long they have been involved with the Scheme and at what level. Details of how long the applicant has been known to their referee and details of their abilities in instructing others towards the Scheme s standards. 2. Premises Reference The second letter must be submitted by a local Dog Warden/Environmental Health Officer to confirm the safety and suitability of the premises/ground(s) being used for the purposes of dog training. The main training premises used, whether indoor or outdoor, must be fully enclosed, and have a suitable surface to train on. Clubs must have their own third party liability insurance and provide facilities for First Aid; details confirming this must be included in the reference and on the application form.
