KANSAS HUMANE SOCIETY PET PALS: PET CARE PATCH PROGRAM Leader s Guide Daisy Level Requirements Kansas Humane Society 3313 N. Hillside Wichita, KS 67219 (316) 524-9196 Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland 360 Lexington Rd. Wichita, KS 67218 (316) 684-6531

KANSAS HUMANE SOCIETY Pet Pals: Pet Care Patch Program Description The Pet-Pals Pet Care Patch Program consists of four levels: Daisy, Brownie, Junior, and Cadette/Senior. At each level, the girls do a variety of age-appropriate activities to teach them about being responsible pet people. All activities are done during troop meetings or at home. The last activity the troop will do is visit the Kansas Humane Society for a tour. To schedule a tour, the troop leader should call 316-524-9196. Tours are offered Wednesday through Sunday. Please call at least one month in advance. All programs include a special behind-the-scenes tour of our beautiful facility as well as puppy playtime or kitty cuddling! Plan to be here approximately an hour and a half. Special Kansas Humane Society patches and associated level bone patches will be issued after all activities and the tour is completed. Cost per girl is $5.00. Cash or checks (made payable to the Kansas Humane Society) are accepted. In order for the girls to earn the Pet - Pals Patch, the following must occur: The girls must complete all required activities before coming for the tour. The girls must come to the tour prepared to talk and answer questions about the activities they did. The troop leader should completely fill out the Patch Program Evaluation Form (the second to the last page of this guide) and turn it in at the beginning of the tour. Each scout must have the KHS permission form signed by a parent or guardian and turned in at the beginning of the tour. LEADERS: Please review the following with your troop before introducing the activities: What is the Kansas Humane Society? The Kansas Humane Society is an animal shelter that cares for dogs, cats and small mammals that don t have homes. Most of the animals are brought to the Kansas Humane Society by their owners. Who can think of a reason why someone might have to give up their pet? (Moving, allergies, cost too much, etc.) Sadly, hundreds of pets are left at KHS by their owners each week. The Kansas Humane Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the care and wellbeing of all animals. Non-profit means that we depend on private donations, people giving money, donating their time or supplies to us that assist us in taking care of the animals temporarily residing here. People bring their animals to us because they know that we work very hard to find them new families to adopt them and give them a loving, life-long home. 2

KANSAS HUMANE SOCIETY Pet Pals: Pet Care Patch Program Description Daisy Girl Scout Level Daisy Girl Scouts must complete three of the five activities listed below, as well as visit the Kansas Humane Society for a tour. Tours are offered Wednesday thru Sunday. Please call 316-524-9196 to schedule a tour (please call at least one month in advance). 1. Safety around dogs is important! If this is the activity you d like to complete, contact Bonnie at the Kansas Humane Society to get a video to be able to help the kids learn how to stay safe when meeting someone who has a dog, or when they are alone and meet a dog they don t know (see page 4). Have your troop practice what they have learned using a stuffed dog. One person will pretend to be the owner while the other troop members demonstrate how to follow the steps to stay safe. What does the word protect mean? It means to keep something safe. It is normal for dogs to protect things. Name 6 things that a dog might protect (see page 5; answers on page 9). What should we do if we see a dog protecting something? (Even if the dog is YOUR dog?) Leave him alone! Why? What might a dog do if he thinks you are trying to take something he is protecting? 2. Collect donation items from our Wish List! Do you have a blanket at home? Do you have toys at home to play with? Do you have snacks/treats that you enjoy eating? What would it be like if the scouts didn t have those things? What would it be like to have to sit in your room all day without toys, or books, or things to play with? That s what the animals here at KHS would feel like if we didn t give each of them a cozy blanket, or toys to play with. Being a non-profit organization, we depend on the generosity of people and groups to donate those items to help us take care of the animals and give them all the same things we have in our own homes. All of the items on the list don t have to be brand new gently-used ones are okay. We use peanut butter for enrichment, we use lots of towels and blankets each day to help keep the animals in our care clean and comfortable, we use window cleaner to keep their areas clean and healthy. Ask your parents, friends, and neighbors to donate one of the items from our list, something that helps us care for the animals and then bring them with you when you come for your tour. The animals will love you for it! 3. Color the How to Hold a Puppy or a Kitten coloring sheet (page 6). Why is it important to hold a puppy or kitten properly? So that they feel safe and secure and to lessen the chances they will get hurt. Once you finish coloring the picture, give it to your best friend and share with her or him what you learned about how to properly hold a puppy or a kitten. 4. What is a pet? Name a few examples of animals kept as pets. A pet is an animal that lives with us, an animal that we take care of. A pet is a member of our family. How do you treat the members of your family? How do you treat your pet? Pets can t get things for themselves so we have to make sure they have what they need. What are some of the things that pets need? A few are: food, water, shelter, grooming, training, love, veterinary care, and exercise. What are wild animals? Where do they live? Name a few examples of wild animals. Each Daisy should complete the activity sheet on page 7. 5. Check it out! There is always more to learn about the animals in our world. How do we take care of them? Which type of pet is best for me and my family? What type of games do dogs like to play? One of the best things to do is to visit your local library and check out books on pet care. Share what you learned with a friend. (page 8) 3

Staying Safe Around Dogs Is Easy! If you would like to pet someone s dog, stay safe by following these three simple steps: Step 1: Ask the owner s permission to pet their dog. If the owner says it s okay, then... Step 2: Hold your hand out so the dog can sniff the back of your hand. Then... Step 3: Pet the dog gently on his back or side. 4

What do dogs protect? Name 6 things 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. How can you stay safe around a dog that is protecting something? By leaving him alone! 5

6 Special Thanks to:

What Is A Pet? Draw a line from each PET to the house. Draw a line from each WILD ANIMAL to the forest. 7

THE MORE YOU KNOW! There are a lot of great books out there that can help you learn all about animals, pet care, types of pets, kindness toward animals, veterinary medicine, etc. The books I read about pets are: Visit your local library and check out books on some of these topics, or maybe find something new to learn about pets! By And By (hint: if you are having trouble finding some good books, here are a list of some we recommend) Pets - An educational and entertaining book full of dogs, cats, fish and birds, along with more unusual pets. Colorful photographs show what our pets look like, how they live and what they eat. Don t Lick The Dog - Meeting a new dog is exciting, but it can also be scary. This humorous how-to manual shows kids the best ways to interact with unfamiliar dogs, providing helpful tips about all sorts of dog behavior. Children often don t understand what dogs actions mean and can misinterpret a threatening signal for a friendly one and vice versa. Pets! - Finding the perfect pet is no easy task, especially at a pet show as fantastical as this one. There are giant porcupines and leaping llamas, lizards that dance the cancan and even kissing fishes! As the animal antics grow sillier, a little boy finds choosing confusing. Just when all hope seems lost, he finds the perfect pet. But what kind of pet does he get? 8
