WHAT ARE 3IN1FEEDERS? 3IN1FEEDERS give farmers the control to limit the amount of supplement stock consume. It does this through the revolutionary saliva restriction system. While the 3IN1FEEDER systems can be set to feed unrestricted rations to stock, it can also limit the intake of sheep and goats to 200 grams/day and cattle to 2kg/day. WHY ARE THEY CALLED 3IN1FEEDEERS? 3IN1FEEDERS can be used successfully to do the following tasks for cattle, sheep and goats: 1) Controlled feeding, 2) Creep feeding, and 3) Free choice feeding HOW DO 3IN1FEEDERS WORK? The system requires stock to lick the feed out of the groove between two adjusters. Changing the position of the adjusters changes the ration that stock can consume. Research has shown that when the lick system is in the most restricted setting the stock lick for 5-10 minutes between periods of grazing. The licking period is limited because the livestock use the saliva from their tongue to get the feed out of the groove and the saliva decreases with progressive licks. HOW DO I... WHAT BENEFITS DO 3IN1FEEDERS PROVIDE FARMERS? No waste Feeding low rations with the 3IN1FEEDERS removes the need to feed any type of stock on the ground. This ensures there is no waste and 100% of the cost of feed is being eaten. Save money by feeding straight corn safely While feeding corn can be the cheapest way to feed energy to stock, 100% rations of corn are often not fed due to the risk of acidosis. Due to the lick system of the 3IN1FEEDERS, if the stock are offered a low setting, there is no risk of acidosis because they can t eat fast enough to cause an issue. Another benefit of feeding straight grain is that it enables some farmers to fully utilize feed they have grown on their own farm. Save time The feeders hold a substantial amount. The 1800 feeder holds 1200kg of pellets or barley. If 150 ewes are being fed 0.5kg per day, the feeder will only require filling once every 16 days. If the feeder is used to creep feed lambs, it will also last a similar time. Although sheep need to be regularly checked, it reduces the time to do this especially if there are bunches of ewes away from the home farm. No mismothering after lambing Pail feeding leads to mis-mothering because ewes will run off from their lambs to be fed. When 3IN1FEEDERS are used, ewes know their feed comes from the feeder and they don t run when a vehicle enters the field. This also reduces stress of farmers because they can easily check ewes and lambs to ensure there is a high survival rate. Ewes will often not feed from a 3IN1FEEDER for up to 2 days after they have lambed this ensures a strong ewe-lamb bond. 2 Train stock to lick from the 3IN1FEEDERS groove? Stock learn faster if they receive a memorable reward (a generous amount of feed) for coming to the feeder. Setting the adjusters as wide as they can before the feed starts falling into the trough will ensure this reward. Here, they will be able to scoop the feed into their mouth and are not being restricted by their saliva levels. Other ways to help train stock are to put some feed in the troughs and on the ground around the feeder. It is important to use a feed that has no risk of acidosis. When the bossy stock aren t at the feeder, the shy stock have more of a chance to feed. The most important findings have been compiled into our User Guide a comprehensive guide detailing how to achieve the best results with your Next Generation Feeders. What are the recommended numbers per feeder? What system should I use to manage feed outflow? For farmers that are unfamiliar with the Next Generation Feeders, the following recommendations are suggested. Regulation Tables The feeders come with stickers on the side walls above the trough area. This sticker has a regulation table that provide an estimate of what cattle and sheep will consume at each setting of the adjustment system. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT TABLES ARE ONLY A GUIDE. There are many variables that can influence the feed intake of stock but the tables can provide a good starting point when setting up the adjusters. The number of stock per feeder depends on whether you are using the feeders to supplement or substitute the animal s diet. Substitute feeding is when stock are receiving their whole ration from the feeder. Stock receiving a substituted diet need to access the feeder more often and longer than stock receiving When SUBSTITUTE FEEDING, sheep require about 35mm of trough space each and cattle require about 150mm. This equates to about 136 sheep and 32 cattle per NGF3800 and NGF1800 feeders and half these numbers for When SUPPLEMENT FEEDING, sheep require about 24mm of trough space each and cattle require about 100mm. This equates to about 200 sheep and 48 cattle per NGF3800 and NGF1800 feeders and half these numbers for Advantage Feeders has had numerous methods on how to position the adjusters accurately. Please read the information on the sticker on your feeder for directions on how best to do this. Measuring feed outflow The hopper has volume stickers in it. The level of feed in the hopper can be measured against this sticker to assess the consumption rate. During lambing, having fewer ewes and lambs around the feeder also makes it more likely that the ewe will leave the feeder with all their lambs. In this situation, they require about 40mm of trough 2 Next Generation Feeders User Guide Using Next Generation Feeders 2013 Advantage Feeders This equates to about 120 sheep per NGF3800 and NGF1800 feeders. Weaners are more susceptible to being bullied and developing into shy feeders. When using the feeders with stock that are in their initial months of weaning, the same number of stock per feeder as substitute feeding should be used. Filling the hopper for a set period Another system that some farmers use is to put a period, such as a week s supply, of feed into the hopper. After a week, if the feeder is empty, then the adjusters need to be closed slightly to reduce the outflow of the ration. If there is feed left, open the slides wider to increase the outflow to the desired rate. Note that if stock are very reliant on the supplement and the feeder is empty for a considerable time, they may be aggressive and trample other stock. Terminology Farmers have chosen to put more or less stock with feeders than the recommended numbers. After using the feeders for some time, farmers will then be able to better assess whether to run more or less stock per feeder. It is important that the condition of stock is regularly assessed as this will impact on feeding requirements. What variables influence feed intake? The main variables to influence intake are: - Feed size: the larger the feed, the more open the adjusters have to be set to allow the feed to flow under the Upper Adjuster and for stock to access the feed between the adjusters. - Breed of stock: some breeds are more intuitive than others and will learn how to feed quicker than other stock. - Age of stock: stock will increase feed intake until they reach mature weight. What s the smallest gap stock can eat out of the feeder? Many users of Next Generation Feeders think that the minimum gap sheep and cattle can lack from is 20mm and 30mm respectively. The tongue of a sheep can fit into a 10mm gap and a cattle tongue can fit in a 15mm gap. Having these narrow gaps will play an important role in restricting the ration and preventing overconsumption issues. A 15mm gap Using the Adjuster Guard The Adjuster Guard is a part that limits stock pushing other stock along the trough. It forces stock to lick from the one location and reduces bossy behaviour. It can easily be placed in and out of position to clean the licking groove. for sheep instead of a 10mm gap can result in double the intake. It is important that the Adjuster Guard on the NGF800 sits behind the brackets at each end and the brace in the middle of the trough. On the NGF1800 and NGF3800, it also sits behind the brackets at each end but has three braces in the trough to sit behind What increment is used for the volume scale? The volume scale in the feeder measures litres or cubic metres. Different feeds have varying densities, and cubic metres in a consistent way of measuring volume. HOW YOU CAN INCREASE YOUR PROFIT This page outlines a range of benefits that many farmers with 3IN1FEEDERS experience. Not all the benefits exist concurrently. There are a large number of assumptions made in the calculations and these will vary considerably from farm to farm. Please contact us for assistance in making specific calculations. We can provide spread sheets for you to calculate the benefits of using 3IN1FEEDERS. USE 3IN1FEEDERS TO FEED LOWER RATIONS 3IN1FEEDERS Advanced Adjustment System can restrict the intake of sheep and goats to 200grams/day and cattle to 2kg/day. This is about a third the amount of other free choice feeders. While there are times of the year that you would want to feed more than 600grams/ day and 6kg/day, for the majority of the year, this amounts to costly overconsumption. 3IN1FEEDERS also feature the Adjuster Guard an attachment that makes it impossible for the stock to walk along the trough with their tongue in the licking area (between the adjusters). It reduces over consumption, helps ensure consistent feeding between animals and minimizes stock being pushed while licking. Introduce stock to straight corn rations? After stock have been trained to lick from the groove the ration can be gradually changed to incorporate increased amount of corn. The adjusters need to be set to a restricted setting then introduce the corn as only a third of the ration. A week later, the corn can be increased to two thirds and then full corn a week later. REDUCE MIS-MOTHERING Pail feeding leads to mis-mothering because ewes will often run away from their lambs to ensure they receive a supplement. Using 3INFEEDERS prevents this because ewes realize that they have a constant supplement source in the pasture and prioritize bonding with their lamb. Users of 3IN1FEEDERS frequently comment that ewes that have just lambed don t leave that position in the pasture for 2 days after lambing ensuring a strong ewe-lamb bond. An added observation is that when ewes are being supplemented by feeders at lambing, the ewes are very calm, often not moving until you are within 10 meters of them allowing them to be checked easily without disrupting them. EFFICIENT RUMEN Supplementing stock every second day is inefficient because the rumen microbes need to constantly alternate from digesting a concentrated feed in a short period to a lower quality dry/pasture feed and so on. This eliminates the risk of acidosis (barley poisoning) and allows corn to be feed in the place of more expensive feed. When used correctly, grain may not have the required level of protein, energy or nutrients but additives like protein pellets can be added to reach the required levels. NO WASTE The exact level of waste that results from feeding on the ground will depend on the type of soil it is fed on and the weather conditions. REDUCE SUPPLEMENT COSTS Corn is one of the best value energy and protein sources. All the outer extremities are reinforced to withstand the roughest treatment from cattle. Being made from connected sheetmetal, all parts are stronger because they all require flanges for joining instead of butt welds. This also means that there are no welds to rust and break. Lifting frame The 800 and 1800 model feeders can be fully loaded and moved. The 3800 model is rated to be transported with 2000kg of feed in it. This is possible due to the built in chassis. Gauge sticker The lower side panels have a table to show what the intake of sheep and cattle is at each adjuster setting. It allows farmers to pull the Mobile Grain Feeders at higher speeds because they can endure bumps. The MGF3800 has load sharing springs to spread heavy loads evenly over all wheels. CENTRAL WHEEL POSITION Centralized axles reduce the load on the tow ball of the pulling vehicle. Other mobile feeders on the market that have the axle at the rear of the feeder can put over 800kg on the tow ball, when many vehicles have maximum tow ball loading of 300kg. The tires are only 480mm high, being 195/55/R13C, and have a load rating of 900kg each. Stock can reach over the wheels to consume. Lambs and kids that are less than 4 months of age have to consume beside the wheels. TELESCOPIC STANDS The Mobile Grain Feeders have a stand in each corner. These prevent them moving when they are uncoupled. ADJUSTABLE AXLE HEIGHT The axles are manufactured with a step. This allows the Mobile Grain Feeders to be set at 3 different heights so they are suitable for all sizes of stock.
