Dog Training Thesaurus I. Introduction Dog training is a broad field encompassing the use of dogs in a variety of roles, from household pets to police search and rescue. Dogs serve our handicapped, assist our law enforcement and military, and protect our families. They accompany us in recreation and sporting activities and perform athletics. To do all the things we need them to do, dogs require specialized and meaningful training that takes advantage of their abilities and instincts. II. Scope and Purpose There are many good resources to assist professional and amateur dog trainers in teaching dogs to perform tasks associated with their various roles. The purpose of this thesaurus is to establish a vocabulary that can be used to index these resources for easy retrieval by those wishing to train a dog for a particular purpose. It includes basic terminology associated with some major areas of dog training. It covers several facets of dog training: activities, dog roles, dog traits, handicapped companions, training methods and devices, and training situations. The content of each facet is summarized below: <Activities> facet: activities that dogs can participate in which require some degree of trained behavior or consideration. <Dog roles> facet: the functions dogs serve in different situations. <Dog traits> facet: some important attributes of breeds or individual dogs that may be considered in selecting likely candidates for successful training. <Handicapped companions> facet: some terms associated with the role of service dogs and the individuals they serve, including medical conditions that commonly qualify for service dog assistance. <Training methods and devices> facet: a broad category listing some specific areas of training, methods and tools, and devices used by dogs in their various roles. <Training situations> facet: some places and situations where dog training commonly occurs or tasks come into play. III. Guidelines This thesaurus follows the major principles of the Z39.19 and uses the ERIC print model (NISO 2005, 42) for noting relationships between the terms listed. There are two parts to this listing: the Hierarchical Display, which shows only thesaurus terms in their hierarchical context, and the Alphabetical Index, which lists each thesaurus term along with alternate terms and their associations. The following conventions are used to guide the user in the application of the terms and to direct the user to related subject terms for each entry in the alphabetical index:
