Read more about our new Governor General: Dr. George P. Garmany, Jr., from Boulder, Colorado, was recently elected as Governor General of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. He has been a member of the Colorado Society since 1994, serving multiple offices there, including two terms as Governor. Prior offices in the General Society include four terms as Surgeon General and one term as Assistant Governor General, with numerous extra appointments during that time. Most recently he served three years chairing the 2020 Committee which engaged in planning for the activities for the General Society to commemorate the 400 th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage. George earned both his BA and MD degrees at the University of Virginia. He moved to Colorado for Residency training and practiced Neurology in Boulder for thirty-eight years. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, and his long-term commitment to teaching resulted in an appointment as Clinical Professor of Neurology at the University of Colorado. He is a former President of the United Medical Staff of Boulder and also of the Colorado Society of Clinical Neurologists. In recognition for his long-term work with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, he received the prestigious Harold E. Williamson Award established by the COPIC Foundation to honor a physician who has volunteered extensive services in his or her community in Colorado. George belongs to the Boulder Rotary Club and has served as a Scoutmaster. He continues to work with the Boy Scouts as a Board Member for the Longs Peak Council. Activities with the Scouts have allowed George and his family to enjoy the wonderful outdoors in Colorado and other nearby states. George s wife, Beverly, is a member of the Arapahoe Chapter of the DAR in Boulder, and George also belongs to the Society of the Cincinnati in the state of Connecticut. They both share a deep love of American History and are looking forward to working with the Mayflower Society at this special time in preparation for the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage.

Page 2 Governor s Message By Linda McGlothin Indiana Society Governor Greetings, Everyone! Spring 2018 As I write this, I can hear the birds singing just outside the window. They know that spring will soon be here. And in walking outside, there are several blooms popping out their heads. I am reminded of the pilgrims and their experience after a harsh winter, waking up to birds singing, seeing the signs of spring, and being grateful that they had made it through that harsh winter. I am grateful to be serving you and excited about our spring luncheon meeting. Our Governor General George Garmany will be visiting and sharing a few updates from Plymouth before launching in to his entertaining talk on "Captivity: Terrorism at the Turn of the Century." This is one program not to be missed. Following the presentation there will be time for questions. Let's show him our support and "Hoosier Hospitality" by being present for this educational program. One of our goals involves education of children and the true story of the Pilgrim experience. Also in attendance at the spring meeting will be Kevin Stonerock who portrays the pilgrim Stephen Hopkins. The Indiana society supports Kevin with donations to help underwrite his "Pilgrim in the School" program. Kevin is available for programs, not only to school children, but also to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, after school programs, etc. His character Stephen Hopkins is ideal for 5th graders. If you know of a group who would enjoy having Kevin, please go to his website, www. kevinstonerock.com and email him your request. To bring you up to date on the Parish Meeting House in Plymouth and the donations given from Indiana; this year we gave a little less than $1000, so we are well on the way towards our goal. Each state is encouraged to give as able, and we have through 2020 to give to reach the goal of $5000. This church is built on the original site where the Pilgrims first worshipped 400 years ago. The church is in need of donations to fund the restoration. If you have not yet given this year, please consider a tax free donation for this worthy cause. You may send a check made out to the society to our Assistant Treasurer Dick Gould, 2436 Hopwood Dr, Carmel, IN 46032. On a final note, we currently have a need of a Board Secretary to take minutes, and we need your help to fill this vacancy. Duties include attending the four yearly meetings and taking minutes. For details on how you can become more involved with the work of the Society, call 317-257-6350 or email me at lmmcglothlin@gmail.com or governor@indianamayflower.com. The Indiana Mayflower database is incomplete only active members were included when it was created. I am creating an excel file that has the pertinent information on every member (past and present) that will be used to add every member to the database. I have reviewed every application from 1-1000 added them to the Excel file I have searched for death certificates, find a grave, death indexes, and social security death information for members 1-800 I am also in the process of comparing the database entries with the applications from more recent members. I am also including relationships of members to each other. This is a work in progress project that I hope will be completed by the end of 2018. I intend to give all the death information found from our members to Plymouth when complete. Plymouth increased cost of preliminary applications from $25 to $35 per request on their website starting Jan 1, 2018. In the past volunteers did the preliminary reviews, however due to the increased number of reviews, there are no longer volunteers willing to do the job and new staff must be hired and trained. At the banquet, we awarded the 2017 Pilgrim Academic Research Award to Pilgrim scholar Jeremy Bangs. His colleague Jori Zijlmans of the Netherlands accepted the award on his behalf. With regret, but warm wishes, Dr. Walter Powell retired as the first Executive Director of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, giving us the opportunity to hire new Executive Director Susan Belekewicz in September 2017. Dear Members, Your financial donations to ISMD are a necessary component for the continuation of our State Society. Our receipts from annual dues and membership fees comprise about one-half of the revenue needed to fund our current activities. This year, our annual expenses will exceed our Society s income by a substantial amount. Please consider making annual contributions to ISMD and please include ISMD in your long term, intentional donation plans. All donations to ISMD are fully tax deductible by the donor as a 501(c)3 charitable, educational society. The great ideals which our Pilgrim ancestors passed on to us are worthy of a continuing legacy. Thank you for your continuing financial support of The Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants. Please mail donations to: Chuck Provost, ISMD Treasurer, 6831 Marmont Ct, Indianapolis, IN 46220 or Dick Gould, ISMD Assistant Treasurer, 2436 Hopwood Dr, Carmel, IN 46032 Page 9 At the Board of Assistants meeting in March 2018, and in looking at the year end Treasurer's report, it was decided that we need to cut expenses because our expenses are more than our income. So, it was decided to cut back on the mailing of the formal invitation. In the future, starting in the Fall 2018, we will still have the RSVP in the newsletter; we will email the invitation to everyone who has an email address (i.e. to the same people to whom we email the newsletter). We will only mail out a hard copy of the invitation to those who live in Indiana who do not have email. It is difficult to break from tradition and we realize that you may miss the fancy invitation in the Fall, but the Board needs to be financially responsible.
