The Newsletter of Youngstown All Breed Training Club 11801 Mahoning Ave. P.O. Box 397 North Jackson, Oh 44451-0397 http://www.yabtc.com 330 538-2907 Spring??? - By Marla Belzowski Editor Brrr..it spring really here yet? With the spring Obedience trial right around the corner, it must be here. I find myself making a list of things to accomplish each year;; clean the gutters, start planting flowers and re-invigerating the landscape, clean out the garage, get the lawn mower tuned up. I start making plans for summer shows, training seminars, doggie events I woud like to do and realize, I might not have time for everything with daily real job work tossed in there. Then I look at the club which needs a lot of outside work to get our new building ready for the Open House in June. Sometimes I just wish I could toss a blanket of snow back over my yard so I didn t have to mess with it.not! Spring Cleaning! Our Building is DONE! - Now the landscaping and outside work begins. But we still have a lot of cleaning inside to do as well. Each Saturday a small group of members will be at the club between noon and 4PM to work on landscaping and power washing club equipment, chairs, repainting items that need touch up. We need some items donated to the building. If you have contact that can supply the following, please contact Perri and let her know: * Large door mats: we are looking for 2 or 3 heavy rugs that are 6 ft by 20 ft. This will help keep the mud down and the large size will prevent the rugs from sliding. * Perineal flowers and shrubs. preferably flower items that die down in the winter and are easy to clean around in the fall Hostas, Day lillies, Columbines, Corel bells, Zebra or Pampas grasses, Irises, crocus, serbian bellflower (campanula), hardy iceplants, purple sage, cone flours, summer cerastium (snow-in-summer), and snow-on the mountian are some of the best items for our building. We will lay out a landscape plan once we know what types of flowers we have to work with. * River rock or white marble to line the wall of the building outside to keep mud from splashing up onto the brick. * Cans of gray gloss spray paint (for cleaning up and repainting our general class chairs). We need someone to volunteer to scrape the GUM off the rims of the chairs and power wash them too. * Outdoor trash containers: heavy made of plastic wood or rock faced so they don t blow around. Something like what you would see at a nature park classy looking and yet easy to clean out and unload. * Plastic/wood park type benches for outside. Something that can be grounded or bolted into in a concrete base so they are not taken. If you think of other items that will help you would like to donate, please e-mail it to Perri. March Madness - Mats Fund Raffle Is over! We made $5000 from the raffle for our mats and with this success we are looking to do it again in November to help fund the Exhaust/Fire Suppression Hood and Ovens for the kitchen. Brags, Brags, Brags. From Dr. Dan & Rev. Vilma O'Neill Colonial Willamsburg,Va. was the setting for the SHOT (Sighthounds of the Tidewater) AKC Lure Coursing Field Trial March 15 where REINE, MBIF, DC, Diamond's La Reine Lionne FC got Best of Breed and finished her Lure Coursing Excellent title. It takes 45 CHAMPIONSHIP points after having the Field Champion title to get a LCX title. Not easy to do. Actually more Ridgebacks get the CD then the LCX. Reine's mom ARIEL won the veteran class both days, March 15 & 16. even helped me through Scooter s first competition offering advice and tips all the way up to the starting time. I cannot thank her enough. Another great teacher was Lotta Schafer. She put on a special class one Saturday to teach the weave poles using the 2x2 method. Right after the class I went home and built weave poles and began to train. Lotta said if done properly you could teach 12 poles in 12 days. She was right! Cindy Zeisler, and the other instructors I have worked with at YABTC, have taught Scooter and I so much. We have had a great experience at YABTC and plan on continuing to train and learn from the experienced instructors. They have set up a fabulous agility program! See you around the club and happy training, Beauty begets beauty, speed begets speed, type begets type. Meanwhile, in the show ring her sister KAYLA, Bronze GCH,DC,Diamond's Seven Karat Cut, SC,FC,CGC,TDI won Best of Breed at the Logansport KC in Indiana March 8. Both Girls are always owner handled! KAYLA, Bronze GCh,DC.Diamond's 7 Carat Cut, SC, CGC got a GROUP TWO at the Windsor KC show March 22 under Judge Wendy Paquette. Mom ARIEL got Selects March 22 & 23. Beauty & type win in the ring. Have passports, will travel!!! Dan & Vilma O'Neill From Terry & Scooter Scooter jumped his way into his first Agility Trial scoring not only a qualifying run in Standard Novice but also taking first place in his jump height of 20. Not too bad for Scooter and I s first trial event ever! We ran the course with only (1) refusal in the Chute (one of Scooter s favorite obstacles). Scooter ran the event in 48.5 seconds with a score of 95. Needless to say Scooter and I are hooked and are looking forward to the next Agility Trial. Scooter and I started at YABTC about a year and a half ago with no training experience. Since then we have completed the Puppy Class, Relationship Class, Intro. to Agility, Beginner Agility and Agility 2. I also got Scooter his CGC. I have had great instructors for all of the classes including Glenda Russell. She was my instructor for many of the classes and I have learned so much from her. Her methods and instruction have taught me and Scooter so much. She E-Mail your Brags or Stories too us! Newsletter@yabtc.com or LegendHold@johnstown.net Welfare Items Dale and Kim Burrier lost their 12 year old Airedale Weezey, Airecraft Alouise Warbird CDX RE and then shortly following and after a sudden onset of a splenic tumor, lost their 8 year old girl Sara, (Ch ptd) Coldstream Airecraft Saratoga, CD. Cindy Zeisler lost her Golden Diva: My sweet Golden Diva went on to the Rainbow Bridge on Feb 19. She taught me so much about unconditional love and how to play agility. I am grateful she did not suffer a long illness. I'm also grateful to my wonderful dog friends for all their hugs and words of comfort. Apil 2014 Youngstown All Breed Training Club 3

Welfare Continued. LuAnn Stuver Rogers lost her boy Quinn Rattlebridge-Harlequinn Man, VER, CD, BN, RE, OA, AXJ, NAP, NJP, THD - Feb. 24, 2001 - March 31, 2014 Quinn was my do-everything, heart-ofmy-heart dog. He spent nearly 12 years as my therapy dog Pet Partner, spending hundreds and hundreds of hours bringing smiles and comfort as a member of Love on a Leash at Robinson Memorial Hospital and making many other therapy visits. He earned obedience, rally and agility titles and was the first Cavalier to earn the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club's (ACKCSC) Versatility title. Despite never having been shown in the breed ring, he won best of Opposite Sex (Veteran Sweepstakes) at the 2012 ACKCSC National at 11 years old, besting multiple Grand Champions. He was a beautiful dog, inside and out. I will hold him in my heart forever. I had lots of compliments on the new building. Everyone loved our facility. Hope this kick off event leads to many many more down the road! Premium is available on our website: http://abtca.mysaga.net/other.html Entries close at 6pm on Wednesday, April 23, 2014. Report from Shelly Kacenski After a "rocky" weather report we decided to go ahead with the Fun Match on March 2. Nevertheless we had a decent turnout despite the snow that fell. As the day went on the snow melted and the roads were fine by the end of the match. We started judging at 10:30 am and were done at 1 pm. It was another successful year. There was an obedience show n go in the afternoon as well that ended around 4:30 pm. 4 Youngstown All Breed Training Club April 2014

TRAINING DIRECTOR S CORNER Well Waddaya think? Is the new building everything you thought it would be? Fredrick Stanley To me, it seems like we re in someone else s building it just hasn t really hit home that we have a new place! Be that as it may, we have a whole lot of learnin to do, to use our space wisely, and new procedures to ensure we don t forget things. Last one out each day/night, make sure you check BOTH doors and check the bathroom lights, too! Gentle reminder: Instructors please remind your students to keep all dogs on short leads, and respect other s space! We plan on offering the new foundation class on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, for those who wish to build a better bond with their puppies. Dates/times T.B.A. Trainers, check out Karen Pryor s web page, at http://www.clickertraining.com/blog Please let me know if you have a question, problem, idea! You can always approach me at the club, or you may contact me by email: airecraft@aol.com or dbairedale@aol.com You may also reach me at 440-220-0551, which is my cellular phone. Thanks to all of the instructors who were able to make it to the instructor s meeting last month! I believe we accomplished a good deal of updating many procedures we needed to set, with the new building. One of the things discussed was the need for specialty classes to be held for problem-solving in both agility and obedience. If you have an idea for a class that would deal with a specific problem, let me know, and we ll set something up. This would be at least several weeksduration, or as needed to solve a particular problem with dogs attending the class. Nikki Puccini attended the Denise Fenzi seminar at Cleveland All Breed several weeks ago, and she will present what she learned, to interested club members. Stay tuned for day and time for her presentation! We now have twice the building to take care of Cleaning the flooring will now be doubly important, as well as bathrooms, kitchen, lobby, etc. I will present to the board a plan to credit club members for cleaning the facility, much like instructors can earn credit to reduce their yearly dues. Those who clean regularly, will be rewarded! Apil 2014 Youngstown All Breed Training Club 5

Lee Jackson Award Tribute to Lee Jackson Lee Jackson was one of the founding members of Youngstown All Breed Training Club. Before the club was established, several people met and trained their dogs at Pioneer Pavilion in Mill Creek Park. They later moved to GF Hall on Logan Avenue in Youngstown to train. Lee spent many hours and much of his own money to keep this club active. He was known as Mr. Youngstown All Breed and served as president of YABTC for 18 years. Lee was also president of Mahoning Shenago Kennel Club. Lee was an AKC judge and one of 3 people in the nation to receive the distinguished 1977 Midwest D Ambris award. Unfortunately Lee passed away before he could receive the award. Both Lee and his wife Kay competed in obedience with Dachshunds and Belgian Sheepdogs. Kay also was Trial Secretary for many years. They had three dogs titled as Companion dogs. Lee had a good sense of humor and had one of his wire haired Dachshunds registered with the name of DAMMIT March of 1978, in honor of Lee Jackson the first Lee Jackson award was given in tribute of him and has become a yearly tradition of YABTC. This award is given to and outstanding and dedicated person who has served our club in honor of Lee Jackson. This year s recipient of the Lee Jackson Award went to Sally Payne. Sally has been a member since October of 1998. Since joining the club she has been very active in numerous club activities. She has made food for the trials both obedience and Agility, helped in the kitchen, stewarding at matches and trials, help move equipment, made agility equipment, made toys and leashes for trials, and donated many things to raffles. She has been known to help with equipment maintenance, and participated in in many demo s at hospitals and nursing homes. She has taken care of the ribbons and awards at the agility trials for many years. Congratulations to Sally Payne for this great honor. 6 Youngstown All Breed Training Club April 2014
