LONE STAR SPOTLIGHT Comments by Sarah How We Spent Our Summer Vacation by Sarah Helber & Jordan By early summer it was getting so hot that I knew I would have to either shave Jordan or head north and find cooler weather. A friend spends her summers in Canada and had invited me to visit several times, so I decided Canada it would be. I had a relatively-new car and a not-too-old dog, so in mid-july we headed north. I have another friend in Cody, WY and have driven up there many times. I've also driven to National Specialties in Portland and Silverdale. I'd never had a reason to drive straight north, so this time I did. We used the first day as a "get out of Dodge" day - it was 103 degrees when we stopped for a break on the Kansas Turnpike, but cooler by the time we got to Grand Island, NE. Our first real "sightseeing" day we drove into the Black Hills, saw Mount Rushmore (well done), the Crazy Horse Memorial (more concept than fact) and hiked in the Black Hills. The next day we headed west to see Devil's Tower in Wyoming (remember Close Encounters of the Third Kind? Imposing.) After a travel day across half of Montana we took the Road to the Sun Highway through Glacier National Park. Just beautiful! Logan Pass, Glacier National Park, 7/15/11 Dallas high temperature - 105 degrees Later I found out that the highway had only been open 2 days - probably why we saw mountain goats near Logan Pass. After Glacier we traveled across Idaho (don't blink!) and Washington for a re-group and repack before entering Canada. We crossed into Canada from I-5, then took the ferry to Vancouver Island where my friend Leslie met me and we spent an afternoon in Victoria. A friend of hers had found us a really nice bed & breakfast, so we stayed a couple of nights on the island hiking with the dogs every day. Page 3
HOW WE SPENT OUR SUMMER VACATION, by Sarah and Jordan, Continued We took the ferry across to the mainland, and drove to Whistler, British Columbia along the Sea to Sky Highway. Just beautiful. I keep repeating myself. Now I know why their license plates say "Beautiful British Columbia!" Dog Beach at Rainbow Lake, near Whistler, BC We hiked almost every day, sometimes twice a day, different places. The area is very dog friendly, and on most of the trails the dogs could be off-leash. We did have to keep a lookout for bears, and saw several. Just one bear (that I knew of) was uncomfortably close. Finally we had to leave Whistler. We drove back into Vancouver in separate cars, explored Stanley Park and had great Indian food in Vancouver. Then Leslie and her husband headed back to Whistler and Jordan and I drove east to Hope, BC. From Hope we headed north up the Fraser River Valley (looks a lot like northern New Mexico), east to Golden and into the Canadian Rockies. After a walk at Emerald Lake in the Yoho National Park we headed north on the Icefields Parkway. The Canadian Rockies look much different to me - sharper peaks, but trees higher on the mountains. Lots of geology here. We got as far north as the Athabasca Glacier, which was really impressive, then headed back south to spend the night in Banff. Athabasca Glacier, Jasper National Park, BC, 8/1/11 (dots are tour buses and people) Dallas high temperature - 107 degrees Page 4
HOW WE SPENT OUR SUMMER VACATION, by Sarah and Jordan, Continued The next morning we went back into the park, walked at Moraine Lake, then drove south on the Banff-Windermere Highway through Kootenay National Park until it was time to head back. We headed east out of the Rockies, then south back into the United States. We drove through Yellowstone to Cody, WY. Yellowstone is soooooo different from the green and snow and glaciers of Canada. Pretty - but very different. After several days in Cody, I had to really head south. I couldn't put it off any longer - I had commitments back in Texas. The temperature had been over 100 degrees every day I had been gone. We headed home, with a stop in Trinidad, CO for the night. We brought a little front south with us. It was only 75 degrees in Amarillo when we came through, and the day we got back to Dallas was the day that broke the 100-degree days spell. Unfortunately, as we all know, it didn't stay under 100 degrees long! Many thanks to Susan for keeping an eye on my house and cat Kirby, and my friends Leslie & George and Alma for hosting me on my trip. Comments by Jordan (officially CT Ambition's Almond Joy Qui Rit VCD1 RAE MX AXJ NF) Nice trip. Lots of nice hikes, lots of nice naps. The ferries were a little odd, but everybody wanted to admire me, so that was cool. The bears were a little worrisome - especially those that Sarah didn't see but I smelled. Loved the dog beach at Rainbow Lake! And the sticks of the arbutus trees were really great! And I always like having my own double bed. Nice trip.
