September Program September 2016 Vol 59, Issue 1 Meeting Place First Baptist Church 17765 Daves Avenue Los Gatos, CA 95030 Next Meeting Friday September 2, 2016 7:30 P.M. Doors Open 7:00 P.M. Dues Sep 1, 2016 Aug 31, 2017 Adults - $15.00 Welcome back, Irisarians...Looking forward to another bloomin year! We ll get the evening off to a quick start with some good advice to the incoming new board members: Christine Dickinson, Peter Marra, and Cara Vainish...and some words of encouragement to our steadfast continuing board members. Next on the program agenda will be some basic Iris 101 culture reviews. Do we have any budding hybridizers in our group? We ve got a little something for you, too, plus possibly a contest for the year!?!? And then we ll be eating our way through all the goodies that will be PROVIDED BY THE BOARD MEMBERS at this first CBRIS meeting of the new membership year. Oh, did we mention that there will be free rhizomes for the taking this month? That s along WITH the usual Door Prize Iris drawings. Come early bring a pencil or pen. Some new program quirks for this year will be introduced by your VPs. Let s shake it up for 2016-17!. Philippa Alvis and Carolyn Craft, CBRIS VPs Register for Region 14 Fall Regional before September 1st for the discounted price. It will be held at Alden s Nursery in Livermore Oct 14 15. Page 6 of 14 CBRIS-Sep 2016 What does September bring? Merry Days Labor Day is always the first Monday of September. Labor, labor, labor! Better be getting those rhizomes planted very soon. They need time to send down some good roots before winter sets in. The 10 th brings Swap Ideas Day. Ideas? I have no idea of what we can do on this day. Send me your ideas but please do not expect any back. The 11 th brings Grandparents Day. If you are fortunate enough to have grandchildren send them out to your iris beds to dig rhizomes, replant and pull those weeds. Those little critters can be quite helpful at times. The 13 th is Positive Thinking Day and I am thinking that I will have better luck getting some of my CBRIS friends over to help in the iris garden than getting those grandkids to last very long in the garden unless it involves water. The 15th is the last date to get that Fall Regional registration form in if you want the lower price. It will be fun at Alden s Nursery. Check it out. The 18 th is National Women s Friendship Day. I cannot survive without my lady friends. A hubby is great but a lady friend knows all the secrets and is there for you without question when needed. And, she will share any iris in her garden. What to do about the 22 nd? Do we worry about the Fall Equinox and realize that those leftover rhizomes must be planted or do we stop and celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day? I guess that I will lift a glass of wine to all the elephants because surely my iris rhizomes will all be in the ground by then. The 28 th brings us to Ask a Stupid Question Day and National Good Neighbor Day. Hey, wait a minute. Weren t we taught that no question is stupid? I always ask my neighbor if I can plant a few leftover rhizomes on her side of the fence. What a good neighbor I am! 2015 AIS Dykes Medal A beardless white iris won the Dykes Medal this year a Siberian, Swans in Flight. Not so amazing when you see how beautiful this iris is when in bloom. Irisarians could view it in many gardens at the National Convention in Portland last year. For an interesting story on how this iris survived go to www.irises.org/about_irises/awards_surveys/ais_awards.html. Congratulations, Robert Hollingworth. photos by Mikey Lango and Carl Boro

CBRIS-Sep 2016 Page 7 of14 Other Rhizome Sales Thank you to all the club members that helped at the rhizome sales this year. Because of you the CBRIS President and the CBRIS Treasurer are happy. Heads Up Remember when CBRIS members dressed up as an iris? At the November meeting CBRIS members will be attending the meeting dressed as a favorite iris. Put those thinking caps on now. Don t tell anyone your ideas as we will be guessing who you are in the iris world. What will you come as? Adorable Diva, Checkmate, Eagles Wing, Glamour Pants, Husky Hero, Jester, Kashmir Prince, Lemon Lollipop, Rooster, Tempting Tigress, or Zorro? Find your fit and make us guess.
